Book excerpt: Narrated in the first person, this short story is one episode in the life of a Russian labour-camp inmate. Written by Varlam Shalamov after his own experiences at a gulag, it describes the apathy of prisoners as they steadily approach death, the assuredness of betrayal and duplicity, and the constant craving for material satisfaction to lessen the empty, scorched feeling inside. When an old acquaintance lays out an escape plan, that satisfaction is offered in the form of condensed milk: a sweet, delicious extravagance - a small element of joy in the midst of impending death.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, breastfeeding has been prominently in the public eye in relation to debates on issues ranging from parental leave policies, work−family balance, public decency, the safety of our food supply, and public health concerns such as health care costs and the obesity “epidemic.” Breastfeeding has officially been considered “the one best way” for feeding infants for the past 150 years of Canadian history. This book examines the history and evolution of breastfeeding policies and practices in Canada from the end of the nineteenth century to the turn of the twenty-first. The authors’ historical approach allows current debates to be situated within a broader social, political, cultural, and economic context. Breastfeeding shifted from a private matter to a public concern at the end of the nineteenth century. Over the course of the next century, the “best” way to feed infants was often scientifically or politically determined, and guidelines for mothers shifted from one generation to the next. Drawing upon government reports, academic journals, archival sources, and interviews with policy-makers and breastfeeding advocates, the authors trace trends, patterns, ideologies, and policies of breastfeeding in Canada.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As I wrote some of the stories for this book, I shared them with my brother, requesting that he fill in my memory blanks and verify some of the details. Recently, I sent an email to him with the latest tale attached and asked, “Do strange things happen to me, or am I just strange?” “You are strange, definitely strange,” he returned. Read these accounts and decide for yourself if life has handed me a unique set of experiences, if I am indeed strange, or if maybe both are true! ***** These narratives will prompt you to remember your childhood, remind you of simpler times, and perhaps—probably—make you chuckle.

Book Synopsis Recipes and Stories Inspired by Shoes! by : Debbie Ritter
Download or read book Recipes and Stories Inspired by Shoes! written by Debbie Ritter and published by Tate Publishing. This book was released on 2011-02 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was scared and imagining the worst—a wreck, Ashlee or Floyd hurt, or worse. I could only understand about every third word Ashlee was saying. She was crying and obviously semi-hysterical, and all I could gather was something horrific had happened on the interstate. And, as usual in our household, it somehow involved Shoes! Recipes and Stories Inspired by Shoes! denotes the fashion fantasy that affects our lives on a daily basis and the traumas such a trivial mainstay can help us survive. As our family developed and grew, we lived through such horrendous moments in time as the Oklahoma City Bombing and the May 3rd Tornadoes. These two events not only tested my theory that feeling like you look good can nearly predestine your day, but they temporarily removed all caring about personal appearance and put me in touch with more important issues. However, as time passed, I once again began to live life's daily passages, taking them for granted as we all do, and again enjoyed the frivolous hobby of shopping, buying and wearing classy to outrageous Shoes!
