Book Synopsis Protest Beyond Borders by : Hara Kouki
Download or read book Protest Beyond Borders written by Hara Kouki and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2011-03-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The protest movements that followed the Second World War have recently become the object of study for various disciplines; however, the exchange of ideas between research fields, and comparative research in general, is lacking. An international and interdisciplinary dialogue is vital to not only describe the similarities and differences between the single national movements but also to evaluate how they contributed to the formation and evolution of a transnational civil society in Europe. This volume undertakes this challenge as well as questions some major assumptions of post-1945 protest and social mobilization both in Western and Eastern Europe. Historians, political scientists, sociologists and media studies scholars come together and offer insights into social movement research beyond conventional repertoires of protest and strictly defined periods, borders and paradigms, offering new perspectives on past and present processes of social change of the contemporary world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are social movement organizations euro-sceptical, euro-pragmatic, or euro-opportunist? Or do they accept the EU as a new level of governance to place pressure on? Do they provide a critical capital, necessary for the political structuring of the EU, or do they disrupt the process of EU integration? This book includes surveys of activists at international protest events targeting the European Union (for a total of about 5000 interviews); a discourse analysis of documents and transcripts of debates on European politics and policies conducted during the four European social forums held between 2002 and 2006 and involving hundreds of social movement organizations and tens of thousands of activists from all European countries; about 320 interviews with representatives of civil society organizations in six EU countries (France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Spain, and Italy) and one non-member state (Switzerland), and a systematic claims analysis of the daily press in selected years between 1990 and 2003. The empirical research shows the different paths of Europeanization taken by social movements and civil society organizations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring how social movements have been influenced by growing Europeanization and globalization, this groundbreaking work analyzes the developing efforts of European citizens to make demands upon the supranational level of European government through social movements, protest politics, and contentious political action. The authors explore the conditions under which citizens are attempting to gain voice before the EU through protest politics, as well as the reasons why a truly transnational realm of collective action has proven so elusive.

Book Synopsis Media Representations of Anti-Austerity Protests in the EU by : Tao Papaioannou
Download or read book Media Representations of Anti-Austerity Protests in the EU written by Tao Papaioannou and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-13 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes constructions of injustice, group identification and participation in news and social media in anti-austerity protests within the European Union (EU). Since 2008, EU member-states have witnessed waves of protests and demonstrations against the adoption of austerity measures and alignment of domestic economies with the prevailing global neoliberal order. Understanding how the media represents dissent and how it influences public deliberation is of critical importance. It is accordingly necessary to explore the strategies deployed and role played by news and social media in representing and perhaps acting upon anti-austerity protests in the Eurozone crisis. This volume undertakes such a critical exploration.
Book Synopsis Europeanizing Contention by : Pierre Monforte
Download or read book Europeanizing Contention written by Pierre Monforte and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2014-04-01 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are the consequences of European integration on social movements? Who are the “winners” and the “losers” of Europe’s organized civil society? This book explores the Europeanization of contention through an in-depth, comparative analysis of French and German pro-asylum movements since the end of the 1990s. Through an examination of their networks, discourses, and collective actions, it shows that the groups composing these movements display different degrees and forms of Europeanization, reflected in different fields of protest. More generally, it shows the multiple strategies implemented by activists to Europeanize their scope of mobilization and by doing so participate in the construction of a European public sphere.
Book Synopsis European Governance and Democracy by : Richard Balme
Download or read book European Governance and Democracy written by Richard Balme and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2008-05-13 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considering the future of European integration, this clear and compelling study explores the interplay between collective action and democracy in the European Union and its member states. Richard Balme and Didier Chabanet analyze the influence of supranational governance on democratization through a wealth of case studies on a broad range of civil society interests, including regional policy, unemployment and poverty, women's rights, migration policy, and environmental protection. The authors trace the evolving relationship between citizens and European institutions over the past decades, especially as public support for deepening and widening integration has waned. This trend culminated in a deep institutional crisis precipitated by the rejection of the draft constitutional treaty in France and the Netherlands in 2005. At least two truisms were proven wrong during this tumultuous period: that European citizens have little interest in European integration and that citizens have little influence on EU politics. However, this power shift has left citizens with a deep distrust of integration and EU institutions with limited capacities to cope with issues the public considers priorities-primarily unemployment and social inequalities. The book shows how Europe-wide interest groups formed and protesters were able to mobilize around key issues of integration. The authors convincingly argue that the growth of contentious social movements has also been nourished by the EU policy process itself, which leaves more room for interest groups and protest politics than for political parties and representative democracy. An essential primer on European democracy, this study will be invaluable for scholars and students in European politics and public policy, globalization and democracy, and comparative social movements.

Book Synopsis Political Protest in Western Europe by : Mario Quaranta
Download or read book Political Protest in Western Europe written by Mario Quaranta and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-09-14 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes the individual and contextual determinants of protest politics in Western Europe. Building on different theoretical perspectives, from social movements theory to political behavior approaches, the author provides new empirical evidence on the patterns of protest politics. Readers will discover why some citizens are more likely to get involved in protests than others, and why levels of protest differ from country to country. The author illustrates that engagement in political protest is often rooted in the interplay of the protester’s individual characteristics and their home country’s contextual characteristics.
Book Synopsis Environmental Protest in Western Europe by : Christopher Rootes
Download or read book Environmental Protest in Western Europe written by Christopher Rootes and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2003-12-11 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise of environmentalism has been one of the more remarkable developments in the politics of western societies in recent decades. However, as environmental awareness has become more generalized, the forms of expression of environmental concern have changed. Established environmental movement organizations have become embedded in policy networks, but, in some countries, there has been a resurgence of environmental radicalism. New groups, adopting innovative tactics, have mounted spectacular and disruptive protests. These developments pose interesting questions for social scientists and policy-makers. Has the institutionalization of established environmental organizations demobilized their supporters and reduced them to a passive, credit-card waving 'conscience' constituency? Has direct participation in environmental protest become the specialized activity of smaller numbers of people? Has there been a decline in the total volume of environmental protest, or is it merely that the forms of protest have changed? Have the protest repertoires of established groups moderated over time, or have they been stimulated by the emergence of more radical groups to adopt more challenging tactics? Has environmental protest become more confrontational? Do protests employ different repertoires of action according to the issues at stake? How does the incidence of protest vary over time and from one country to another? Is there evidence of a Europeanization of either the issues or the forms of environmental protest? These are some of the questions this volume addresses. Based upon an analysis of the protest events reported in one quality newspaper in each of eight countries during the ten years 1988 to 1997, this is the first systematically comparative study of environmental protest in a representative cross-section of EU member states. It breaks entirely new ground in the study of environmental politics in Europe and is a major contribution to the study of protest events.
Book Synopsis The Transnational Condition by : Simon Teune
Download or read book The Transnational Condition written by Simon Teune and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2010 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last two decades Europe has experienced a rise in transnational contention. Citizens are crossing borders to advance alternative visions of Europe. They spread protest concepts and tactics and explore new ways of organizing dissent. Far from being a recent phenomenon, transnational protest is obviously more salient in a world of international corporations and global political interaction, compounded by electronic communication and cheap travel. The transnational condition permeates all aspects of protest organization and dynamics-from individual biographies to activist networks to cycles of contention. The contributors offer insight into this multi-faceted condition by combining rich empirical evidence with reflections on the problems of transnational research.
Book Synopsis Ideology and Social Protests in Eastern Europe by : Veronika Stoyanova
Download or read book Ideology and Social Protests in Eastern Europe written by Veronika Stoyanova and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-03-13 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that the recent political mobilizations in Eastern Europe have been underpinned by a class struggle between a more conservative and a more radical line of contention. The latter line, the book contends, is designed by and for subaltern groups whose anti-systemic programme calls for not just the eradication of corruption, but for more participatory forms of democracy, for social justice, and for freedom from want. The former, on the other hand, is designed by powerful groups of intellectuals, for the middle classes whom the intellectuals see as the historical strata capable of advancing the ‘catch-up’ projects of modernization and Europeanization which they zealously champion. Based on a critical examination of recent political struggles, including a detailed case study of the 2013 protests in Bulgaria which focuses particularly on their internal antagonisms and drawing on the social theories of Antonio Gramsci and Ernst Bloch, the book provides shrewd insights into class antagonisms in political mobilizations, the distortive nature of ideological constructions and utopian longings, and the factors which propel many people to support projects for social change.

Book Synopsis Protest, Popular Culture and Tradition in Modern and Contemporary Western Europe by : Ilaria Favretto
Download or read book Protest, Popular Culture and Tradition in Modern and Contemporary Western Europe written by Ilaria Favretto and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-04-10 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mock funerals, effigy parading, smearing with eggs and tomatoes, pot-banging and Carnival street theatre, arson and ransacking: all these seemingly archaic forms of action have been regular features of modern European protest, from the 19th to the 21st century. In a wide chronological and geographical framework, this book analyses the uses, meanings, functions and reactivations of folk imagery, behaviour and language in modern collective action. The authors examine the role of protest actors as diverse as peasants, liberal movements, nationalist and separatist parties, anarchists, workers, students, right-wing activists and the global justice movement. So-called traditional repertoires have long been described as residual and obsolete. This book challenges the conventional distinction between pre-industrial and post-1789 forms of collective action, which continues to operate as a powerful dichotomy in the understanding of protest, and casts new light on rituals and symbolic performances that, albeit poorly understood and deciphered, are integral to our protest repertoire.
