Book excerpt: Twenty years following the introduction of the euro as single European currency, it remains unclear whether Article 128 of the TFEU enshrines an autonomous concept of legal tender with regard to the euro or whether the provision merely refers to pre-existing concepts of legal tender in the national laws of member states. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, recommendations for countries to unilaterally dollarize/eurorize have become common, particularly when the countries lack economic credibility. After exploring the characteristics of dollarizing/eurorizing economies, we look at the merits and costs of unilateral eurorization for Cape Verde, a highly tourism based economy that has become increasingly integrated into the euro-zone area and that has a strong macroeconomic track record. We illustrate that neither the benefits nor the costs of unilateral eurorization are large and conclude that there is no compelling case to change the current exchange rate arrangement at this point in time. Econometrically, we assess the characteristics of dollarized economies and demonstrate that few of them apply to Cape Verde, further confirming that Cape Verde does not fit the pattern of most dollarizing countries.
Book Synopsis The Euro: Consequences for the Consumer and the Citizen by : Thierry Vissol
Download or read book The Euro: Consequences for the Consumer and the Citizen written by Thierry Vissol and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "EURO". The name of the single currency for the European Union has not been chosen casually by the Heads of State and Government during the Madrid Council of December 1995. After tough discus sions, it has been unanimously accepted. The intention was to recall to every single citizen that this new money would be his money, that it would be the expression of the new European environment carefully built since the "fifties" to avoid any return to war and barbarism in Europe. Confidence and positive expectations for a better future put in the European construction have thus been clearly linked to the confidence in the new European currency and vice-versa. Euro notes and coins will be the first expression, clear, material and universal (for any European citizen being young or old, rich or poor, but also for the rest of the world) of a European identity alongside the national one. Obviously, it is of the outmost importance that the change over to the euro, be as smooth and as citizen-friendly as possible.
Download or read book Money written by Thomas Greco and published by Chelsea Green Publishing. This book was released on 2001-11-01 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cash. Loot. Scratch. Lucre. Bread. Coin. Scrip. Moolah. Green. We all think we know intuitively what money is, and what it can do for us. Tom Greco, director of the Community Information Resource Center, understands and explains money on an eye-popping, fundamental level. Moreover, he provides a roadmap on how to make alternatives to the "legal tender" work for individuals, communities, and local economies. Money will set your mental gears spinning with fantastic ideas. This book explains the mysteries and realities of money in clear and accessible prose, and reveals the true workings, and alarming fragility, of our existing financial system. It also describes concrete and realistic actions that individuals, businesses, social service agencies, and governments can take to enhance productivity and purchasing power, to protect local economies from the ravages of globalization, and to strengthen the bonds of community. Money is a radical critique of our existing financial system, but also a practical and inspirational how-to manual for creating a vibrant and effective community currency system. You'll learn: The truth about how money is created, and what it actually represents Why we're all in debt How the financial system is structured to inevitably transfer wealth from the poor to the rich How to start a financial revolution in your local community A retired professor of business and economics, Tom Greco has spent twenty years studying community currency systems around the world, including historical models (such as during the Great Depression), and the scores of contemporary examples now operating in the United States, Canada, Europe, South America, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan. He helped establish the Tucson Traders currency in Arizona, and he has served as a consultant for many others. No pie-in-the-sky idealist, Greco offers a realistic vision of how healthy local economies can be supplemented with flourishing community currencies. Anyone who works routinely with money needs this book--this means bankers, stockbrokers, merchants, community organizers, loan sharks, gamblers, investors, bank robbers, hedgefund operators, sports agents, and ordinary people.

Book Synopsis Foreign Currency by : Michael Howard
Download or read book Foreign Currency written by Michael Howard and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-07-22 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Currency fluctuation, currency wars and even potential currency collapse (the Euro, the Bitcoin) are all risks that commercial parties must consider and guard against. This book gathers together in one volume all the information and advice practitioners are likely to need when advising on, advancing or defending claims involving a foreign currency element. The determination of the proper currency (or currencies) of a claim often has a dramatic effect on the level of a court judgment or arbitration award that is ultimately obtained. It is, therefore, vital for practitioners to accurately assess claims which involve a foreign currency element. The authors guide the reader through the legal principles governing how foreign currency claims are treated in English law. The book covers both the treatment of foreign currency in substantive law as well as such procedural matters as how to claim interest correctly on a foreign currency claim and how to plead, prove or disprove the applicability of a particular currency. This book is an invaluable and essential resource for all lawyers involved in international commerce, but will be of particular interest to those engaged in international finance, commodity transactions, international shipping and transport, and the insurance of assets and liabilities abroad. "Those who practise in this country need guidance in navigating the tricky waters that The Despina R unleashed. This excellent book provides that guidance." The authors "have been uniquely well placed to meet the challenge of analysing what is a perplexing body of jurisprudence, and to suggest principled answers to currency issues that have not yet been the subject of judicial decision. They consider not merely claims in contract and tort, but every type of claim that might raise an issue in relation to a foreign currency." The Rt Hon. The Lord Phillips of Worth Matravers, KG, PC, President of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom, 2009-2012

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 33 Perspectives on the future of cash from a political, economic and philosophical viewpoint Over the past 20 years, euro cash has become a tangible symbol of economic integration and cohesion in Europe. It stands for stability and trust, especially in times of crisis. However, a look ahead at what the future holds for Europe’s single currency suggests there are some specific challenges looming. For example, the new forms of payment and so-called cryptocurrencies that the digital turn has ushered in have cast fundamental doubt on the status of cash and government-issued currencies. The authors of this book provide a nuanced overview of the topic by looking at multiple aspects of money and currency from different angles. This affords a new sense of perspective in the often vehement debate over the future of our money. With essays by Otmar Issing, Clemens Fuest, Hans-Jürgen Papier, Peter Sloterdijk, Barry Eichengreen, Viviana Zelizer and Gaspard Koenig.
