Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advent of the euro was a revolution for the 340 million people who exchanged their former currencies – considered a fundamental element of national sovereignty – for this new single currency. Encouraged by some who believe that its introduction gives more cohesion and strength to Europe in an increasingly globalized economy, the euro is criticized by others who believe that the constraints it imposes are a source of austerity and favor northern European countries at the expense of countries in the south. The Future of the Euro Currency traces the evolution of the monetary policy which the European Central Bank instituted at a time when economic, monetary and financial crises were legion. The book presents, as objectively as possible, the advantages and disadvantages of this new currency, while considering the improvements that could promote its durability.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject Economics - Other, grade: 10, course: BACHELORS OF SOCIAL SCIENCES (DUAL HONORS), language: English, abstract: Euro, the common currency of European Union, was launched by 11 of the 15 members of the Union, on January 1, 1999. The Maastricht treaty of 1991, which set the stage for the monetary union, laid down certain eligibility criteria for member countries to join European Monetary Union (EMU), such as maintaining budget deficit, public debt, inflation, long term interest rates and exchange rate within defined limits . The Euro was introduced to world financial markets as an accounting currency on 1 January 1999, replacing the former European Currency Unit (ECU) at a ratio of 1:1 (US $ 1.1743). Euro Coins and Banknotes entered circulation on 1 January 2002 . While the Euro dropped subsequently to US $ 0.8252 within 2 years (26/10/2000), it has traded above the US $ 1.5990 on July 15, 2008 . Since late 2009, the Euro has been immersed in the European Sovereign Debt Union Crisis which has led to the creation of 'European Financial Stability Facility' as well as other reforms aimed at stabilizing the currency. In July 2012, the euro fell below US $1.21 for the first time in two years, following concerns raised over Greek debt and Spain's troubled banking Sector. As of June 2012 with more than Euro 906 billion in circulation, the euro has the highest combined value of bank notes and coins in circulation in the world, having surpassed the US $. Based on International Monetary Fund estimates of 2008 GDP and purchasing power parity among the various currencies, the Euro Zone is the second largest economy in the world. The countries whose currencies are in Euro are known as Euro land. In this background, the present term paper will try to explore the emergence, ascent and recent problems being faced by Euro zone. Specifically the objectives of the present study are: To explore the emergence of Euro; to analyse the rece

Book excerpt: "Trade between the European Union (EU) and developing countries is important—around 22 percent of the EU's exports go to developing countries, while 20 percent of the EU's imports originate in those countries. More specifically, trade between Latin America and the EU has ballooned in recent times..."What are the risks and opportunities facing the Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) region from the introduction of the euro? Will the replacement of the European currency basket by the euro have real economic effects, or will it be little more than an accounting phenomenon? This slim volume attempts to answer those questions. In doing so it covers the current economic situation, presents financial flow, discusses the value and volatility of the euro, and the financial implications of the euro, including the banking system and foreign debt and reserve management. Overall, the report gives a broad picture of the possible impact of the euro on the LAC region.

Although the single currency is much discussed in terms of macroeconomics and global finances, policymakers rarely address its impact on European citizenship in social, cultural, political, and everyday life economics terms. This hidden side of the single currency is the focus of the essays, which use various approaches, from economic history and political sociology to citizenship and legitimacy, to reveal the connections between the Euro and European citizenship. This timely contribution by renowned experts provides a greater understanding of the Euro at a time when it is not clear whether it should be celebrated or commemorated, and looks into aspects of the single currency that are the base of the social trust that supports it and that is at stake in the present crisis. It will be an essential tool to anyone studying the political, social, and economic development of the E.U.

Book excerpt: A Brookings Institution Press and the European Community Studies Association publication The European economic and monetary union has changed the structure of international monetary relations fundamentally. In this book two experts--one European, the other American--offer transatlantic perspectives on the ramifications of the monetary union and the launch of the euro. C. Randall Henning examines selected American views on Europe's monetary union, and looks at the political, economic, and institutional interests of the United States as they are affected by the creation of the euro. He examines the external monetary policymaking machinery of the union and discusses the relationship of the monetary union to international institutions, particularly the meetings of the G-7 finance ministers and central bank governors and the International Monetary Fund. Henning is generally sympathetic to European integration, supportive of the monetary union, and persuaded of the importance of international cooperation. Pier Carlo Padoan presents a European view of the role of the euro in the international system. He looks at the euro as a potential global currency and examines the transition phase between a regional currency and a global currency. Central to this is an analysis of the appropriate exchange rate policy for the euro. He also considers euro-dollar relations and the prospects for transatlantic cooperation. C. Randall Henning is a professor at The American University and a senior fellow at the Institute for International Economics. Pier Carlo Padoan is a professor at the University of Rome and the College of Europe.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The introduction of the euro was an important event for the world economy and the international political system. For the first time in history, a substantial group of European countries-eleven of the fifteen members of the European Union including three members of the G-7-have voluntarily agreed to replace their national currencies with a single currency. The euro area has already become established as the second largest currency area in the world and will therefore become a major player in the international monetary system. The creation of the euro poses a number of interesting questions. Will the euro be a strong or a weak currency? Will the euro challenge the leading position hitherto held by the United States dollar and would sharing of the burdens and advantages of reserve currency status improve or worsen the stability of the international monetary system? How will the euro affect US relations with Europe? Does the formation of the euro intensify European integration in other fields? Is a bi-polar international monetary system viable? These and other issues motivated the Luxembourg Institute for European and International Studies and the Pierre Werner Foundation to organize an international conference in Luxembourg on December 3-4, 1998, on the eve of the birth of the euro. At the outset we were aware that the issue of the euro went far beyond pure economics. Money, after all, is too important a subject to be left to economists.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, grade: 2,7, Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg (Lehrstuhl f r Auslandswissenschaft), course: Seminar: International Trade, 19 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The major event of introducing the single currency in 1999 did not have a great effect in daily life because the consumers in all twelve countries were still using their national banknotes and coins in payment transactions. Officially the euro replaced the national currencies, with the national currency units becoming sub-units of the euro but it existed only as scriptural or 'book' money. That meant that first of all especially the world of business and finance began to use the euro in cashless operations. For them the transition happened immediately but on the other side for administrations and business the transition period took longer because they had to change their systems for accounting, pricing and payments over to the euro. To familiarise the people living in the euro-area-countries with the euro, dual pricing on labels was introduced and so the general public recognized the changing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can the euro challenge the supremacy of the U.S. dollar as a global currency? From the time Europe’s joint money was born, many have predicted that it would soon achieve parity with the dollar or possibly even surpass it. In reality, however, the euro has remained firmly planted in the dollar’s shadow. The essays collected in this volume explain why. Because of America’s external deficits and looming foreign debt, the dollar can never be as dominant as it once was. But Europe’s money is unable to mount an effective challenge. The euro suffers from a number of critical structural deficiencies, including an anti-growth bias that is built into the institutions of the monetary union and an ambiguous governance structure that sows doubts among prospective users. As recent events have demonstrated, members of the euro zone remain vulnerable to financial crisis. Moreover, lacking a single voice, the bloc continues to punch below its weight in monetary diplomacy. The world seems headed toward a leaderless monetary order, with several currencies in contention but none clearly dominant. This collection distils the views of one of the world’s leading scholars in global currency, and will be of considerable interest to students and scholars of international finance and international political economy.

Book excerpt: It is rare for countries to give up their currencies and thus their ability to influence such critical aspects of their economies as interest and exchange rates. Yet ten years ago a number of European countries did exactly that when they adopted the euro. Despite some dissent, there were a number of arguments in favor of this policy change: it would facilitate exchange of goods, money, and people by decreasing costs; it would increase trade; and it would enhance efficiency and competitiveness at the international level. A decade is an ideal time frame over which to evaluate the success of the euro and whether it has lived up to expectations. To that aim, Europe and the Euro looks at a number of important issues, including the effects of the euro on reform of goods and labor markets; its influence on business cycles and trade among members; and whether the single currency has induced convergence or divergence in the economic performance of member countries. While adoption of the euro may not have met the expectations of its most optimistic proponents, the benefits have been many, and there is reason to believe that the euro is robust enough to survive recent economic shocks. This volume is an essential reference on the first ten years of the euro and the workings of a monetary union.

Book excerpt: Twenty years following the introduction of the euro as single European currency, it remains unclear whether Article 128 of the TFEU enshrines an autonomous concept of legal tender with regard to the euro or whether the provision merely refers to pre-existing concepts of legal tender in the national laws of member states. This work collects all contributions to the 2018 conference “The Euro as Legal Tender” held in Frankfurt-am-Main.

First, it is the single largest currency area to be created in an industrialized region. In a sense, the Euro area is important as a test case for those contemplating the establishment of new currency areas in East Asia, North America or other industrialized regions. Second, it was established by sovereign states working as peers, who, despite various challenges, peacefully and autonomously decided to create a single currency area. In other words, the Euro area is very different from other currency areas created by countries formerly in colonial relationships with each other. Therefore, for regions emerging from a developing status and forming a currency area, the Euro area could serve as a model case.Marking the 10th anniversary of the creation of the European Central Bank (ECB) and the Euro, this invaluable book analyzes the monetary policy of the ECB — the guardian of the Euro — by using recently developed econometric methods. The analysis performed in this book marks a substantial contribution toward understanding the significance of the Euro area as well as the future of the Euro from an international perspective.
