Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book is discussed the morality involved in the ordinary cases of medical homicide and mutilation. Craniotomy has been omitted because this operation on the living child is never morally licit, and when done on the dead fetus it has no moral quality that requires explanation. The articles may seem to be intended for Catholic physicians and spiritual directors alone, but the desire in writing them was to reach all practitioners, to the end that the Natural Law which binds every man may be observed. Morality is not made such in its fundamental principles by any religious creed, but by the requirements of Divine Order, which finally prevails no matter what the opposition. Killing and maiming without sufficient extenuation did not become unlawful solely by the establishment of Christianity. Practically, however, physicians who have no religion, or a religion which is so illogical as to pay no attention to dogma, or even to rail at it as obtrusive, necessarily gravitates to the emotional in morality, and the principles of this book will not even interest them. Dogmas are abstract propositions, and all human society rests on abstract propositions. The most vital facts in morality, the basic distinction between crime and all that is virtuous or indifferent morally, is in abstract principle alone, but physicians and pastors who are not trained in philosophy and rational religion cannot appreciate an abstract principle-they are influenced only by the concrete.

Book Synopsis Permissible Killing by : Suzanne Uniacke
Download or read book Permissible Killing written by Suzanne Uniacke and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do individuals have a positive right of self-defence? And if so, what are the limits of this right? Under what conditions, if any, does this use of force extend to the defence of others? These are some of the issues explored by Dr Uniacke in this comprehensive philosophical discussion of the principles relevant to self-defence as a moral and legal justification of homicide. She establishes a unitary right of self-defence and defence of others, one which grounds the permissibility of the use of necessary and proportionate defensive force against culpable and non-culpable, active and passive, unjust threats. Particular topics discussed include: the nature of moral and legal justification and excuse; natural law justifications of homicide in self-defence; the Principle of Double Effect and the claim that homicide in self-defence is justified as unintended killing; and the question of self-preferential killing. This is a lucid and sophisticated account of the complex notion of justification, revolving around a critical discussion of recent trends in the law of self-defence.

Book Synopsis Case Studies in Pharmacy Ethics by : Robert Veatch
Download or read book Case Studies in Pharmacy Ethics written by Robert Veatch and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-04-10 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pharmacists face ethical choices constantly -- sometimes dramatic life-and-death decisions, but more often subtle, less conspicuous choices that are nonetheless important. Among the topics confronted are assisted suicide, conscientious refusal, pain management, equitable distribution of drug resources within institutions and managed care plans, confidentiality, and alternative and non-traditional therapies. Veatch and Haddad's book, first published in 1999, was the first collection of case studies based on the real experiences of practicing pharmacists, for use as a teaching tool for pharmacy students. The second edition accounts for the many changes in pharmacy since 1999, including assisted suicide in Oregon, the purchasing of less expensive drugs from Canada, and the influence of managed care on prescriptions. The presentation of some cases is shortened, most are revised and updated, and two new chapters have been added. The first new chapter presents a new model for analyzing cases, while the second focuses on the ethics of new drug distribution systems, for example hospitals where pharmacists are forced to choose drugs based on cost-effectiveness, and internet based pharmacies.
Download or read book To Kill Another written by Graham McAleer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Basing his argument on natural law, Graham J. McAleer asserts that only public authority has the right to intentionally kill. He draws upon the work of Thomas Aquinas and Francisco de Vitoria, defending the claim that these natural law theorists have developed the best available theory of homicide. To have rule of law in any meaningful sense, the author argues, there must be protections for the guilty and prohibition against killing innocents. Western theories of law have drifted steadily towards the privatization of homicide, despite the fact that it runs counter to rule of law. Public acts of homicide like capital punishment are now viewed by many as barbaric, while a private act of homicide like the starvation of comatose patients is viewed by many as a caring gesture both to patient and family. This subversion of the rule of law is prompted by humanitarian ethics. McAleer argues that humanitarianism is a false friend to those committed to the rule of law. The problem of human vulnerability makes political theology an inescapable consideration for law. Readers will find much to reflect upon in this book. McAleer's argument can be read as a cultural chapter in the history of moral ideas, but also as a close and timely reading of a grim subject.
Download or read book Taking Life written by Torbjorn Tannsjo and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-08-03 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When and why is it right to kill? When and why is it wrong? Torbjörn Tännsjö examines three theories on the ethics of killing in this book: deontology, a libertarian moral rights theory, and utilitarianism. The implications of each theory are worked out for different kinds of killing: trolley-cases, murder, capital punishment, suicide, assisted death, abortion, killing in war, and the killing of animals. These implications are confronted with our intuitions in relation to them, and our moral intuitions are examined in turn. Only those intuitions that survive an understanding of how we have come to hold them are seen as 'considered' intuitions. The idea is that the theory that can best explain the content of our considered intuitions gains inductive support from them. We must transcend our narrow cultural horizons and avoid certain cognitive mistakes in order to hold considered intuitions. In this volume, suitable for courses in ethics and applied ethics, Tännsjö argues that in the final analysis utilitarianism can best account for, and explain, our considered intuitions about all these kinds of killing.

Book Synopsis The Ethics of Killing by : Jeff McMahan
Download or read book The Ethics of Killing written by Jeff McMahan and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-06 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive philosophical study of the ethics of killing in cases in which the metaphysical and moral status of the individual killed is uncertain or controversial. Among the questionable and marginal in this way are human embryos, foetuses, neonates, animals, anencephalic infants, congenitally and cognitively-impaired human beings, and human beings who have become severely demented or irreversibly comatose. In an attempt to understand the question of moral status in such cases, The Ethics of Killing develops and defends many different accounts of personal identity, the nature of death, and the wrongness of killing. McMahan contends that the morality of killing is deeply complex and that the principles that determine the morality of killing in marginal cases are different from those that govern the killing of persons who are self-conscious and rational. Among the central claims of the book is that killing in marginal cases should be evaluated primarily in terms of the impact it would have on the victim at the time rather than on the ontological value of the victim's life as a whole. What primarily matters, in other words, is how killing the victim would affect what this particular victim is concerned with at the time of his or her death. In the second half of the book, the various foundational claims about identity, death, and killing are brought to bear in a systematic fashion to lead to conclusions that are both novel and plausible about such practical issues as abortion, prenatal injury, infanticide, the killing of animals, the significance of brain-death, the termination of life-support in cases of permanent vegetative state, the use of anencephalic infants as sources of organ- transplantation, euthanasia, assisted suicide, and advance directives in cases involving dementia. The range and scale of this groundbreaking book is unprecedented.

Book Synopsis The Ethics of Killing by : Christian Erk
Download or read book The Ethics of Killing written by Christian Erk and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-09-01 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Christian Erk examines the ethical (im)permissibility of killing human beings in general and of selected killings in particular, namely suicide, lethal selfdefence, abortion and euthanasia, as well as organ transplantation and assisted suicide. He does so by addressing a range of important ethical questions: What does it mean to act? Of what elements is an action comprised? What is the difference between a good or evil action and a permissible or impermissible action? How can we determine whether an action is good or evil? Is there a moral duty not to kill? Is this duty held by and against all human beings or only persons? What and who is a person? What is human dignity and who has it? What is it that is actually taken when somebody is killed, i.e. what is life? And closely related to that: What and when is death? By integrating the answers to these questions into an argumentative architecture, the book offers a comprehensive exploration of one of the most fundamental questions of mankind: Under which conditions, if any, is killing human beings ethically permissible?
