Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ethical Approach to Theism The chief aim of the following pages is to make clear the distinction between the two chief types of religious thought, the pantheistic and the theistic; and to show on what basis in experience and reflection the latter rests. Its chief characteristic is that it finds the final Reality in the Good rather than in the Whole. Its method is selective and ideological, and it finds the answer to the problem of the universe less through an induction than through an imperative, the imperative of the Good upon the will of man. The Good is that which attracts all things, "moving them as the object of their love." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ethics of Theism: A Criticism and Its Vindication The second part of this volume, accordingly, con sists of an Ethical Treatise, which is a development of the Author's principles, and which may therefore be regarded as a vindication of the criticism contained in the first part. The criticism of the Seven Dialogues might with justice be regarded as lame and defective, unless it were to be followed up by an attempt to elucidate the Ethical Criterion. Without this, the Author would expose himself to the charge of rashly entering on a line of investigation which he had not courage to pursue - of putting his hand to the plough, and looking back. The determination of the Ethical Criterion would settle a goodly number of subordinate questions, in cluding some of those discussed in the Dialogues. We are also aware that in our ethical disquisition we touch on other and deeper problems of philosophy to which due attention is demanded at our hands; but this at tention must be reserved for a future opportunity, as also an exegetical examination of the word of God. The inquirer after truth will only be satisfied when he finds in actual detail that each deduction of reason, whether in metaphysics or ethics, is in harmony with the doctrines of Christianity, as determined by strictest interpretation of the texts of the Bible. Book Synopsis Ethical Religion by : William Mackintire Salter
Download or read book Ethical Religion written by William Mackintire Salter and published by . This book was released on 1889 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is made up of lectures given, for the most part, before the Society for Ethical Culture of Chicago. The premise tying all of these lectures together is that while not all religions teach morality, they are all based on ethical principles; that it is one's duty to obey the laws of ethics whether or not one professes a religion; and that men who would not obey them could do no good either to themselves or to others, in this world or the next. Proponents of ethical religion believe that man ought to abide by the laws of morality and that if he does not, it will mean an end to all order in the world and ultimate destruction. Moral action, ethics, Darwinism, the social ideal, personal morality, the ethics of Jesus, the failure of Protestantism and Unitarianism, and the basis of the ethical movement are among the topics discussed." Download or read book Ethical Theory written by William Curtis Swabey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ethical Theory: From Hobbes to Kant The problems of elementary ethics as a branch of philosophy tend to remain much the same over the centuries. The philosophers from Hobbes to Kant, whose views are to be analyzed and commented upon in this study, deal with a set of problems thoroughly familiar to teachers of ethics today. In the background there is the basic division between those who may be called naturalists and those who feel that morals must have a grounding in the realms of the transcendent. Neither Hobbes, Spinoza nor Hume literally denied the existence of God, but now, in a classification of systems, they are appropriately put with the naturalists, since, in one way or another, the concept of God has for them shifted its meaning. The others obviously accepted some form of traditional theism. Locke formulated ethics in terms of egoism and a God who sees men in the dark. Shaftesbury and Hutcheson established the existence of disinterested benevolence by considerations which have continued to be generally accepted down to the present day. Cudworth, Clarke, Balguy and Price state impressively the classic theory that we apprehend an eternal and immutable moral law by means of reason. Hutcheson propounded, with clarity, the theory of a moral sense, which causes us to approve of actions seemingly tending to the greatest good of the greatest number. Book Synopsis Classical Theism and Buddhism by : Tyler Dalton McNabb
Download or read book Classical Theism and Buddhism written by Tyler Dalton McNabb and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-02-10 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As an atheistic religious tradition, Buddhism conventionally stands in opposition to Christianity, and any bridge between them is considered to be riddled with contradictory beliefs on God the creator, salvific power and the afterlife. But what if a Buddhist could also be a Classical Theist? Showing how the various contradictions are not as fundamental as commonly thought, Tyler Dalton McNabb and Erik Baldwin challenge existing assumptions and argue that Classical Theism is, in fact, compatible with Buddhism. They draw parallels between the metaphysical doctrines of both traditions, synthesize their ethical and soteriological commitments and demonstrate that the Theist can interpret the Buddhist's religious experiences, specifically those of emptiness, as veridical, without denying any core doctrine of Classical Theism. By establishing that a synthesis of the two traditions is plausible, this book provides a bold, fresh perspective on the philosophy of religion and reinvigorates philosophical debates between Buddhism and Christianity.
