Book excerpt: None of us has precisely the same path to follow, and yet all of us are summoned to follow a path . . . For many of us, the understanding emerges clearly in mid-life, at the very time when we suspect it is too late for us to do anything about it. Our soul knows better; it is simply time to wake up.' This inspiring and challenging book is for anyone who has ever asked, 'What now?' or 'What will be left of my life when I'm gone?' Storyteller and writer Mike Riddell brilliantly identifies the malaise that is particularly common in midlife and shows us how to make it a time for refocusing on what really matters. In an engrossing blend of reflection and story, he encourages us to regain our capacity for wonder and to discover the unique gift that only we can bring to the world.

Book excerpt: Summer, 1942: The con man known as David Walker didn't exactly volunteer, but OSS chief Wild Bill Donovan convinced him that serving his country and the cause of freedom by posing as German astrologer Peter Kepler was a better use of his time than going to prison for impersonating a Princeton University professor. His mission: use his skills in illusion, sleight of hand and deception to gain Heinrich Himmler's trust and persuade him to assassinate Adolph Hitler. In a plot that involves German resistance members in high places, Walker walks a tightrope of deceit, playing on the high command's fascination with the occult to penetrate the highest levels of Nazi power in a daring plan to eliminate the Nazi Fu ̈hrer. In action that takes him from Berlin to Paris to Cairo; from Hitler's Eagle Nest to Himmler's occult Wewelsburg Castle, Gary Kriss's The Zodiac Deception is a memorable debut, an unforgettable thrill ride through the dark heart of World War II Germany. Book excerpt: In this monograph, the author argues that Satan was not perceived as a universal malevolent deity, the embodiment of evil, or the “ruler of Pandemonium” within first century Christian literature or even within second and third century Christian discourses as some scholars have insisted. Instead, for early “Christian” authors, Satan represented a pejorative term used to describe terrestrial, tangible, and concrete social realities, perceived of as adversaries. To reach this conclusion, I explore the narrative character of Satan selectively within the Hebrew Bible, intertestamental literature, Mark, Matthew, Luke, Q, the Book of Revelation, the Nag Hammadi texts, and the Ante-Nicene fathers. He argues that certain scholars’ such as Jeffrey Burton Russell, Miguel A. De La Torre, Albert Hernandez, Peter Stanford, Paul Carus, and Gerd Theissen, homogenized reconstructions of the “New Testament Satan” as the universalized incarnation of evil and that God’s absolute cosmic enemy is absent from early Christian orthodox literature, such as Mark, Matthew, Luke, Q, the Book of Revelation, and certain writings from the Ante-Nicene Fathers. Using Jonathan Z. Smith’s essay Here, There, and Anywhere, the author suggests that the cosmic dualist approach to Satan as God’s absolute cosmic enemy resulted from the changing social topography of the early fourth century where Christian “insider” and “outsider” adversaries were diminishing. With these threats fading, early Christians universalized a perceived chaotic cosmic enemy, namely Satan, being influenced by the Gnostic demiurge, who disrupts God’s terrestrial and cosmic order. Therefore, Satan transitioned from a “here,” “insider,” and “there,” “outsider,” threat to a universal “anywhere” threat. This study could be employed as a characterization study, New Testament theory and application for classroom references or research purposes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deceived by Evil was conceived by a dream in a dream. A dream the author had after he’d dreamed of the funeral of a significant friend. And after reflecting on the funeral of many of his friends buried before their time, and all deceived by their own distractions. The dream, Deceived by Evil, is a brief synopsis or description of the damage that can occur when we’re vulnerable to the deceit of distractions that comes at us from a dark place. Most of the time, when we’re young, we are innocent and naïve to the many directions that life can pull us in, whether by bad parenting or many other abuses coming at us from all angles of darkness. This book is mainly about discernment, about being spiritually attuned to the negative forces at play and of a devil who is totally involved, by any means necessary, in the manipulation and orchestration of every chord and note played to the tune of our destruction. And as the book concludes, sometimes we must be ready to sacrifice that thing that looks right and feels good to the touch but deadly to the use. But it’s not necessary for you to have to sacrifice your life, if you learn from the lives that have been sacrificed to evil for your good. So if this book is received in its proper perspective by those who read it, my hope is that they will be able to lessen their chance of being Deceived by Evil.
