Book Synopsis The A to Z of Architecture by : Allison Lee Palmer
Download or read book The A to Z of Architecture written by Allison Lee Palmer and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2009-10-12 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Architecture, which can be understood in its most basic sense as a form of enclosure created with an aesthetic intent, first made its appearance in the Prehistoric Age. From its earliest developments, architecture changed over time and in different cultures in response to changing cultural needs, aesthetic interests, materials, and techniques. The A to Z of Architecture provides information on architects like Frank Lloyd Wright, Tadao Ando, Leon Battista Alberti, Filippo Brunelleschi, Michelangelo, and Konstantin Stepanovich Melnikov, as well as on famous structures like the Acropolis, the Colosseum, the Forbidden City, Machu Pichu, Notre Dame, the Pyramids of Giza, Stonehenge, and the World Trade Center. The dictionary examines the development of architecture over the centuries through a chronology, an introductory essay, a bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on the major architects, well-known buildings, time periods, styles, building types, and materials in world architecture.

Book Synopsis Impressions of Spain by : Albert Frederick Calvert
Download or read book Impressions of Spain written by Albert Frederick Calvert and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-08-10 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume is not put forward as an exhaustive or profound study of Spain and the Spaniards, but as a simple record of impressions of people the author has met and places he visited during a series of many journeyings in different parts of that greatly interesting and much-misunderstood country. These impressions were meant, in the beginning, to form a small collection of sketches and appreciations; and, although the number has increased beyond the limits of the author's original intentions, the design and scope of the book have not been revised or amplified. The result of this desultory system of working is a string of disconnected chapters—the first fruits of fugitive notebook jottings collected over several years—rather than a concentrated and comprehensive survey of the subject as a whole.

Book Synopsis Digenis Akritis by : Elizabeth Jeffreys
Download or read book Digenis Akritis written by Elizabeth Jeffreys and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1998-05-07 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Digenis Akritis is Byzantium's only epic poem, telling of the exploits of a heroic warrior of 'double descent' on the frontiers between Byzantine and Arab territory in Asia Minor in the ninth and tenth centuries. It survives in six versions, of which the two oldest, dating from the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries, are presented here in an edited version. The manuscripts are preserved in the Grottaferrata monastery near Rome and the Escorial Library in Spain. Behind these two versions lies a twelfth-century poem that can now be glimpsed at but not reconstructed. This edition and translation aims at highlighting the nature of the lost poem, and at providing a guide through the maze of recent discussions about the epic and its background.
