Book excerpt: Since the turn of the century, the impact of digital technologies on the promotion, production and distribution of music in the Philippines has both enabled and necessitated an increase in independent musical practices. In the first in-depth investigation into the independent music scene in the Philippines, Monika E. Schoop exposes and portrays the as yet unexplored restructurings of the Philippine music industries, showing that digital technologies have played an ambivalent role in these developments. While they have given rise to new levels of piracy, they have also offered unprecedented opportunities for artists. The near collapse of the transnational recording industry in the Philippines stands in stark contrast to a thriving independent music scene in the county's national capital region, Metro Manila, which cuts across musical genres and whose members successfully adjust to a rapidly evolving industry scenario. Independent practices have been facilitated by increased access to broadband Internet, the popularity of social media platforms and home recording technology. At the same time, changing music industry structures often leave artists with no other option but to operate independently. Based on extensive fieldwork online and offline, the book explores the diverse and innovative music production, distribution, promotion and financing strategies that have become constitutive of the independent music scene in twenty-first-century Manila.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens when a young, liberated woman graduates from college and moves abroad for her first job? This question and more are answered in my novel, The Life and Loves of Victoria. With a word count of about 43,500, it follows the story of a modern and liberated Asian woman named Victoria (Vic). She’s in her 20s and has just graduated from college. She moves abroad for her first job as a customer service executive for a big shipping line and goes dating mostly foreign men. From an unnamed country to Singapore and back to the Philippines, the novel chronicles the minute, intimate details of her romantic albeit sexual connections; her losses, survival, triumphs, and what she has to go through to have the life she aspires to have. Victoria is created not out of some pretentious literary concept: she’s based on a real person and the story is based on that real person’s story. There’s no attempt to glorify her. As for the male characters, they’re not portrayed out of concepts of how men are and/or how men should be; they’re based on real people. The actions and dialogues of the male characters are written out of real occurrences. There are a good number of sex scenes. They’re in plain language and don’t spare details. But although the novel is full of these graphic scenes, they’re simply not what the novel is about. The scenes may be brutal and shocking but they’re essential in portraying Vic’s lust for life and love, and her desperation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In June 2016, Rodrigo Duterte won the Philippine presidential election by a landslide. Infamous for his bombastic temper and un-PC wisecracks, he is waging a brutal drug war that has killed more than 12,000 people so far. Over the last nine years, British writer Tom Sykes has travelled extensively in the Philippines in order to understand the Duterte phenomenon, interviewing friends and enemies of 'The Punisher' - as he is known - in politics, the media, the arts and civil society. Sykes witnesses anti-government demonstrations in the capital Manila and visits the provincial city of Davao, where Duterte began his crusade against crime using police and vigilante death squads. By delving into Duterte's troubled childhood of violent rebellion, Sykes discovers what motivates the man today in his pursuit of a merciless 'war on the poor' - as Amnesty has described it - that has no end in sight. The Realm of the Punisher also examines oppressed and marginalized groups in the modern Philippines through encounters with a transgender rights campaigner, an 86-year-old former sex slave to the Japanese in the Second World War, a public artist who must work while under attack from Maoist rebels, and slum-dwellers resisting violent eviction by a real estate company. The past is never far away from these present-day problems and Sykes' travels to festivals, cemeteries, war memorials and a tomb housing an embalmed corpse reveal the ways in which key figures in Philippine history - from José Rizal to Ferdinand Marcos - have influenced current affairs. Funny, tragic, enlightening and uncompromising - and infused with the author's strong sense of social justice - The Realm of the Punisher is the first major travel book by a Westerner to explore Duterte's Philippines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Karl De Mesa's Radiant Void is a collection of engaging and observant reportage and journalism on Philippine popular culture, from indie music, the comedy of Michael V, the rise of sleeping disorders among call center agents, to the rise of MMA in the Philippines."e;If there is one thing that's enviable in Karl De Mesa's writing, it's his sense of restlessness. Coupled with a zeitgeisty sense of phraseology and a penchant for the grotesque, this agitation-encapsulated in spitfire Hunter S. Thompson-vibe notes on a sort of continuing present-day doomsday (a socio-cultural doomsday, if you may)-is even more marked, even more gripping than in his already-golden fiction. I say this because, shit, what's more terrifying than the real world? In Report From the Abyss, De Mesa respects his subjects enough to offer himself up to a sort of voluntary drowning, a drowning in worlds not entirely his, an unwelcome, chest-thumping guest so snarky in prosody and observation-nay, journalism-that these very worlds are shaken, momentarily plucked from their otherwise steady orbits."e; - ALDUS SANTOS, Author of Vocalese (Poems) and Repeat While Fading"e;Karl R. De Mesa's writing is like a Mac running on a multi-core-fast, gripping and smooth. The only choking that happens is the one you feel at the base of your throat after reading it."e; - ISHA, movie soundtrack scorer, folk-jazz singer"e;Philippine culture is not a melting pot, as Karl De Mesa makes clear in this engaging set of essays on the rich smorgasbord that comprises the country. There are pop culture icons here, but also underground heroes, contemporary babes (Marian and Solenn), and discerning pieces on how "e;Jingle Magazine"e; and a defunct rock club shaped much of today's music culture without most of today fans knowing it. Then there's the reportage about deadly family feuds in Mindanao and sleepless call center agents, and you begin to wonder, all this in the same country? The flip side of disunity is diversity, and it takes a writer of Karl De Mesa's versatility to capture it in all its riotous glory."e; - HOWIE SEVERINO, news anchor, journo icon

Book excerpt: Made in Nusantara serves as a comprehensive introduction to the history, sociology, ethnography, and musicology of historical and contemporary popular music in maritime Southeast Asia. Each essay covers major figures, styles, and social contexts of genres of a popular nature in the Nusantara region including Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Singapore, and the Philippines. Through a critical investigation of specific genres and their spaces of performance, production, and consumption, the volume is organised into four thematic areas: 1) issues in Nusantara popular music; 2) history; 3) artists and genres; and 4) national vs. local industries. Written by scholars working in the region, Made in Nusantara brings local perspectives to the history and analysis of popular music and critically considers conceptualisations developed in the West, rendering it an intriguing read for students and scholars of popular and global music.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Philippines is a fascinating example of a "poor country democracy" where issues of economic development and poverty, political participation and stability, as well as ethnicity and migration are crucial. The Routledge Handbook of the Contemporary Philippines provides a comprehensive overview of the current political, economic, social, and cultural issues of the country. The Handbook is divided into the following four sections concentrating on a different aspect of the Philippines: domestic politics; foreign relations; economics and social policy; cultures and movements. In terms of domestic politics, chapters discuss clientelism, bossism, dynasties, pork barrel and corruption as well as institutions - the presidency, congress, the judiciary, the civil service, political parties, and civilian-military relations. The Philippines is confronted with many overseas challenges, with the foreign relations section focused on the country’s relationship with China, Japan, and the USA as well as assessing the impact of the Filipino diaspora community around the world. Regarding economics and social policy, authors examine industrial policy, capital flight, microfinance, technocracy, economic nationalism, poverty, social welfare programs, and livelihoods. The final section on Philippine cultures and movements highlights issues of customs, gender, religion, and nationalism while also examining various social and political forces - the peasantry, the middle class, indigenous peoples, NGOs, the left, trade unionism, the women’s movement, and major insurgencies. Written by leading experts in the field, the Handbook provides students, scholars, and policymakers of Southeast Asia with an interdisciplinary resource on the evolving politics, society, and economics of the Philippines.
