Book Synopsis Galatians Re-imagined by : Brigitte Kahl
Download or read book Galatians Re-imagined written by Brigitte Kahl and published by Paul in Critical Contexts. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uncircumcised messianic Galatians are no longer enslaved to those who by nature are not gods (Gal 4:8), but have become known by God and one with Israel, included as sons of Abraham without the need for circumcision, representing the eschatological movement of the nations turning to God, the beginning of a new creation triggered by the resurrection of God's crucified Son. Only if they keep their foreskins are they truly "nations." Only if they worship God alone, uncircumcised as they are, do they testify to the new creation that has started to transform the world. Their circumcision would not be a return to Jewish orthodoxy (for they have never been Jews) but, on the contrary, a concession to imperial idolatry, that compromises with a world ordered in the image of Caesar.

Download or read book Paul vs Peter written by William R. Newell and published by Ravenio Books. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are two great revelators, or unfolders of Divine Truth in the Bible,—Moses in the Old Testament, and Paul in the New. Some one may say, “Is not Christ the Great Teacher?” In a sense this is true; but in a real sense Christ is the Person taught about, rather than teaching, in the Gospel. The law and the prophets pointed forward to Christ; the epistles point back to Him; and the book of Revelation points to His second coming, and those things connected with it. The Four Gospels tell the story of how He was revealed to men, and rejected by them. Christ Himself, therefore, is the theme of the Bible. Moses in the law reveals God’s holiness, and thus by means of the Law reveals human sin, and the utter hopelessness and helplessness of man. Paul in his great epistles reveal Christ as our Righteousness, Sanctification, Redemption, and All in All.
Book Synopsis Rhetoric and Galatians by : Philip H. Kern
Download or read book Rhetoric and Galatians written by Philip H. Kern and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1998-12-03 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph challenges the accepted notion that Galatians is either a sample of classical rhetoric or should be interpreted in light of Graeco-Roman rhetorical handbooks. It demonstrates that the handbooks of Aristotle, Cicero, et al. discuss a form of oratory which was limited with respect to subject, venue and style of communication, and that Galatians falls outside such boundaries. The inapplicability of ancient canons of rhetoric is reinforced by a detailed comparison of Galatians with the handbooks, a survey of patristic attitudes towards Paul's communicative technique, and interaction with twentieth-century discussions of the nature of New Testament Greek. Dr Kern concludes that rhetorical handbooks were never a tool of literary criticism and that they cannot assist the search for a distinctly Pauline rhetoric. Thus this study has implications not only for Galatians, but also for other New Testament epistles.

Book Synopsis Philippians and Galatians by : Stanley P. Saunders
Download or read book Philippians and Galatians written by Stanley P. Saunders and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 2001-08-01 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The letters to the Philippian and Galatian congregations illustrate well the passion and intensity of the writing of the apostle Paul. Philippians is perhaps Paul's warmest letter, affirming the already close relationship between the Philippians and Paul with the language of partnership, joy, and humility. Galatians, on the other hand, reveals frustration and anger and lacks the expression of thanksgiving typically found near the beginning of Paul's letters. Although Paul presumes a relationship of trust and respect with the Philippians, the tone of Galatians suggests that he thinks he may already have lost this community to an erroneous vision of the gospel - a perspective that was not really the gospel at all.

We need not be surprised in the least at these disturbances. The same spirit of bigotry and exclusiveness reappears again and again in various forms. Sometimes it insists on a particular dogma, at other times on a form of government, or mode of worship, or a particular rite and ceremony, as being necessary to salvation. It Springs from the selfishness of the human heart, which would like all other people to conform to us rather than that we should conform to them, Or let them have their own ways and work out their own mission.' This intolerant spirit is responsible for all the religious persecutions which form the darkest chapter in the history of Christianity, and which are by no m'eans confined to one church or sect. Nearly every sect has at one time of its history been persecuting according to the extent of its power and opportunity. We must all the more be thankful to the great Apostle of the Gentiles for his bold and noble defense of the gospel of freedom.
