The Success of Apprenticeships presents the observations and opinions of 48 actors regarding apprenticeships. These testimonies recount how apprenticeships allowed them to improve their expertise, their professional practices and their organization skills. This book also examines how their interactions in the work/study process allowed them not only to develop the skills of apprentices, but also the skills of those who accompanied them – the teacher-tutors and the business apprenticeships supervisors. The creation of an authentic community of apprentices subscribes to the formation of an ecosystem of learning, in which each individual harvests fruits in terms of the development of their personal abilities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jobs An American Solution is a specific jobs creation idea that would be initiated by businesses and individual entrepreneurs and based on an apprenticeship approach. It is a self-help program that is intended to expedite the creation of good-paying skilled and professional jobs. It is not a government regulated apprenticeship similar to those that are common in European or Asian countries. This Apprentice 101 program is a voluntary, unstructured jobs initiative by private individuals, small or large businesses, trade organizations, unions, municipalities, etc. The basic motivation for a business or entrepreneur is a generous tax credit for every apprentice candidate they hire, sponsor and train. This is not a government hand-out but an investment in America and its citizens that promises to be extraordinary. Researchers at Columbia University and the City University of New York, found that for each unemployed youth someone between the ages of 16 and 24 who is in neither work or school costs taxpayers nearly $ 14,000 dollars per year in direct costs for things like medical bills and government aid, while ultimately creating a social burden of more than $37,000 dollars annually (when accounting for the costs of crime and lost tax revenue). Jobs are the life blood of our economy. They create wealth in exchange for services rendered that increase and improve our way of life. Current unemployment and under-employment is especially high. The many jobless people in America are losing hope of an economic recovery. Our politicians, Republicans and Democrats, respond with contrasting solutions that focus only on taxes and spending. Our large cities and communities are especially in need of real good-jobs if we are to succeed in fighting poverty. We need to encourage our more fortunate citizens to provide job opportunities for the less-fortunate.

Book excerpt: Do you want to get started as an entrepreneur? Do you want to take advantage of being young? Why Wait? Why Wait? shares Rob Berk's journey, from his first year at Hamilton through graduation day. This roller coaster ride started when he decided to #SayYes and began working with New York Times Best Selling Author and Serial Entrepreneur, Dave Kerpen, as his executive assistant. Rob learned more working with Dave than he did in the classroom. He discovered how to #SayGoodbye to his dreams of playing college baseball and to being unintentional with his time. Rob realized how valuable it is to #BeHelpful and to #Care. As a sophomore at Hamilton, he launched Solvit, a social media and digital branding company aimed to help bring creative solutions and new perspectives to small business owners. Two years later, Solvit remains operational. He discovered how essential it was to #Fail(AndFigureItOut). During the summer before his senior year, Dave and Rob co-founded Apprentice, a platform that matches entrepreneurs with the best Future COOs while providing world-class mentorship and a life-changing experience for college students. So far this year, Apprentice has generated over $150K in revenue to date. Rob shares insights on work-life balance in #IAmAsOldAsIAct; how it is equally important to #SmileAndCry; why it is essential is to #AppreciatetheGrind. As he approached his graduation from Hamilton, Rob decided #WhyNot? - why not share his story. In an effort to help fight the effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic, 50% of the profits from Why Wait will be donated to Feeding America. Feeding America has been in existence for over forty years and is America's largest hunger-relief organization. Millions of people have lost their jobs and are at risk of going hungry; Feeding America supports food banks that are especially essential, in times of national crisis. Rob Berk is a May 2020 graduate of Hamilton College and an alumna of Hunter College High School. He is the co-Founder and co-CEO of Apprentice, a platform that matches entrepreneurs with the best Future COOs while providing world-class mentorship and a life-changing experience for college students. Rob is the Founder of Solvit, a social media and digital branding company aimed at bringing creative solutions and a new perspective to small business owners. Rob lives in New York City. It provides insights into their business, entrepreneurialism, and of them as individuals, allowing the reader to immerse themselves in these businessmen’s world, full of plans, ideas, hopes, and failures in the struggle to survive during a time of economic recession. The analysis reveals the importance of trust and networks as a way of opposing the vulnerability and risk involved in entrepreneurialism. As such, the book has an appeal that extends beyond anthropology. It will be of interest not only to students of sociology, Italian studies, and business studies, but also to anyone with an interest in seeing business through different lenses. Through its close ethnographic accounts of businessmen, it provides a different approach to capitalism and a reflection on human nature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With business seemingly everywhere on television, from the risks of the retail and restaurant trade to pitching for investment or competing to become the next 'apprentice', The Television Entrepreneurs draws upon popular business-oriented shows such as The Apprentice and Dragons' Den to explore the relationship between television and business. Based on extensive interviews with key industry and business figures and drawing on new empirical research into audience perceptions of business, this book examines our changing relationship with entrepreneurship and the role played by television in shaping our understanding of the world of business. The book identifies the key structural shifts in both the television industry and the wider economy that account for these changing representations, whilst examining the extent to which television's developing interest in business and entrepreneurial issues is simply a response to wider social and economic change in society. Does a more commercial and competitive television marketplace, for instance, mean that the medium itself, through a particular focus on drama, entertainment and performance, now plays a key role in re-defining how society frames its engagements with business, finance, entrepreneurship, risk and wealth creation? Mapping the narratives of entrepreneurship constructed by television and analysing the context that produces them, The Television Entrepreneurs investigates how the television audience engages with such programmes and the possible impact these may have on public understanding of the nature of business.
