Not only do the several metals segregate in different ways, but each metal may behave differently in different mineral associa tions. Every district and every deposit should be studied separately in the light of all available chemical and geologic data. There are, however, certain laws Of segregation that almost invariably are clearly indicated, and as data have accumulated many puzzling ap parent exceptions to these laws have disappeared. This paper is an amplification of, an earlier Survey bulletin on the enrichment of sulphide ores (bulletin It is a discussion of representative deposits, especially Of the paragenesis of their ores and of the principles that underlie the processes of enrichment. I hope it may suggest to those engaged in geologic work and in mining some lines Of approach to the solution of the complex problems that are encountered in the field. I realize fully that there may be serious omissions and possibly errors in the discussion of the complex problems here presented. I shall esteem it a favor if anyone whose statements I may have mis quoted or misinterpreted will set me right, and if those who have had superior opportunities for study Of certain districts will correct any wrong impressions that I may have given. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ore Deposits: A Discussion Re-Published From the Engineering and Mining Journal New York May, 1903 The discussion on ore-deposits which appears in this pamphlet is a reproduction of the views expressed before the Geological Society of Washington, at two consecutive monthly meetings, early in 1903; as reported in the Engineering and Mining Journal, but it also includes some important corrections and amplifications of the material previously published. In a manner, timely and suggestive, it represents the latest opinions on a subject which is of perennial interest to all those who are engaged either in the academic or the practical pursuit of the ore-bodies valuable to man. The discussion gives particular prominence to the recent accentuation of magmatic differentiation as a factor in the distribution of ores in rocks; this is the reason why the advocates of the agency of water as a determinative process are not so prominent. Mr. Emmons, Prof. Van Hise and other authoritative writers have indeed taken part in the discussion and added largely to the value of it; but their purpose has been evidently more to warn against the exaggeration of a new motif in the geologic drama than to reiterate their own views fully until the new theories shall have been further substantiated. The present position of the study - it is not yet an exact science - of ore-deposits is worthy of a brief review. It is summaried herewith in words whose repetition seems warranted as an introduction to the discussion on which the present pamphlet is based. Mining owes much to geology. This debt will, let us hope, be increased, for it is an honorable obligation. Science justifies herself to the commercial world by the practical aid which she gives to industry. Of gold is a rich gold ore, worth $330 a metric ton; in fact, as' little as per cent. Of gold, equivalent to 1 gram to the metric ton, or a value Of 66 cents a ton, if occurring in an ore with other useful substances, is ordinarily paid for by smelting works. It may thus be said that the source of all ore deposits may ultimately be traced to rocks with igneous characteristics. The igneous rocks which carry, or are answerable for, the richest metalliferous masses are mainly those of the larger intrusions. These are deep-seated or plutonic in Character, by which is meant that they never reached the earth's surface in a fluid state, but were covered to a considerable depth at the time of their consolidation. Generally speaking, the older igneous intrusions - that is to say, those which belong to the pre-cambrian and Palaeozoic periods - are richer in ore deposits than those which have been intruded at a later date.
