Chaucer and Spenser were great writers and great men: they shared between them every gift which goes to the making of a poet except the one which alone can make a poet, in the proper sense of the word, great. Neither pathos nor humour nor fancy nor invention will suffice for that: no poet is great as a poet whom no one could ever pretend to recognise as sublime. Sublimity is the test of imagination as distin guished from invention or from fancy: and the first English poet whose powers can be called sublime was Christopher Marlowe. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Drama In the following pages, an endeavour is made to tell, in scale and with a due regard to proportion, the story of English drama from its beginnings in the miracle play and morality to the performance of Sheridan's Critic, in the year 1779. A con cluding chapter presents a sketch of the course of the drama since that time, in outline and by way of suggestion, and no more. To have completed the book on the same scale would have demanded another volume. But a better reason for the course here pursued is to be found in the circumstance that, by the time of Sheridan, almost the last vestige of the original dramatic impulse had been lost, the impulse that begot Mar lowe and Shakespeare and carried the great traditions of their art over the Restoration and into the next century; and when the modern revival came, inspired by a renewed appreciation of the great Elizabethans, it was manifestly not a revival on the stage, but in a new species of literature, the drama of the study, as different from the original parent stock as the novel is dif ferent from it or from the drama capable of successful presenta tion on the stage. When Walter Sav age Landor wrote his Cita tion of William Shakespeare, he gave to English literature one of its masterpieces. Who so addeth to or taketh away from such a work committeth a literary sin. The State protects its citizen who conceives a fancyand develops it to a practical invention. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Tales From Shakespeare Although in the following pages I have chosen those plays, or most of them, which Charles and Mary Lamb omitted from their Tales from Shake speare, and although I have. Taken a title very like theirs, my attempt has not been to round off or tag a conclusion to their inimitable work. They, as wise judges of what their book should be, found that a certain class of play lay outside their purpose. It is just these plays - the historical ones - which, with a different purpose, are here cast into narrative form. Elizabethan drama centres in Shakespeare, not merely for the general reader, but also for the professional student. Shake speare seems to have tried nearly every form or plan suggested by his predecessors and given it in many cases its supreme expression. Moreover, to an extent which was at one time greatly under-estimated, his successors recognized his pre - eminence and started from his achievement. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare's Hamlet William Shakespeare was baptized at Stratford-on-Avon on April 26, 1564, so that the date of his birth is probably April 22 or 23. He was the son of John Shakespeare, who had left his father's farm at Snitterfield about thirteen years before, and had come to Stratford, where he engaged in business (especially in the sale of agricultural produce), and became one of the prominent citizens of the town, holding office in the borough more than once. He married, in 1557, Mary Arden, the daughter of a wealthy farmer of excellent family, whose home was at Wilmcote, near Stratford. The dramatist, accordingly, came of good English stock. Shakespeare grew up in the little town of Stratford, in one of the most beautiful districts of England. He received his education in the Stratford grammar school, where he got the "small Latin and less Greek" with which Ben Jonson credited him. But his training, at least in Latin, was doubtless pretty thorough, and Jonson's statement must be interpreted in the light of his own very unusual scholarship. Book excerpt: Douglas Bruster's provocative study of English Renaissance drama explores its links with Elizabethan and Jacobean economy and society, looking at the status of playwrights such as Shakespeare and the establishment of commercial theatres. He identifies in the drama a materialist vision which has its origins in the climate of uncertainty engendered by the rapidly expanding economy of London. His examples range from the economic importance of cuckoldry to the role of stage props as commodities, and the commercial significance of the Troy story in Shakespeare's Troilus and Cressida, and he offers new ways of reading English Renaissance drama, by returning the theatre and the plays performed there, to its basis in the material world.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare and America The discovery of America had much to do with the revival of English learning and litera ture, and aroused the anglo-saxon mind to that creative activity which produced her immortal drama. Columbus, Cabot, Drake, Raleigh, and America, made possible a Shakespeare. They lifted the horizon of the human mind no less than of the seas, and widened the intellectual view of man to a larger world. If the enlargement of the world furnished inspiration for a Bacon's mind and for the new philosophy, and the new science, much more did it awaken the new son-g and arouse the poetic genius of a Shakespeare. In none of its functions did the English mind of that age become more active and productive than in its imagination. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Two Noble Kinsmen Some of the ablest critics - Lamb, Coleridge, Charles Knight, Dyce, Swinburne, and others - believe that Shakespeare was one of the authors of le T 700 Noble Kinsmen; and when I edited it, some twenty years ago, I was inclined to agree with them. It is certain that the play had two authors; that John F letcher was one of them; that the other was his equal, if not his supe rior, in dramatic power and skill; and that their joint production, whatever may be its history, is one of the best works of that golden age of the English drama. I am now fully satisfied that Shakespeare did not write a line of it; but I have decided to retain it in the present edition, giving an impartial summary of the evidence and arguments for and against the theory that Shakespeare had a share in it, and leaving readers and students to decide the question for themselves. The authors say also. "It has been wished to make these Tales easy reading for very young children. To the utmost of their ability the writers have constantly kept this in mind; but the subjects of most of them made this a very difficult task. It was no easy matter to give the histories of men and women in terms familiar to the apprehension of a very young mind. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The True Tragedy of Richard the Third: To Which Is Appended the Latin Play of Richardus Tertius, by Dr. Thomas Legge, Both Anterior to Shakespeare's Drama; With an Introduction and Notes Malone commences his History of the English Stage by saying that Dryden has truly observed that Shake speare found not, but created first, the stage 1 and the critic then proceeds to produce evidence which shows that this observation is not true, as most certainly it is not. It was in truth (as Mr. Collier more judiciously says) created by no one man, and in no one age; and, Whatever improvements Shakespeare introduced, it will be seen that when he began to write for the theatre, our drama was completely formed and firmly established.2 Bad as the following play is, it is a drama, completely formed, and was regularly acted. If Dryden had said that Shakespeare found the stage of brick, and left it of marble, it would have answered his purpose as well, and would have been nearer to the truth. The recognition that he received during his life-time was not very enviable and surely the deer-stealer could not even dream, far less believe, that there would come a time when his name would be gifted with the power of conjura tion. With his death his plays sank into oblivion from which Garrick, some two centuries after wards, raised them to light again, and they have, ever since, been blanketed, as it were, from the four quarters of the globe. Indeed, his merits have been so exhaustively dealt with, that not a sheaf has been left for the despairing gleaner. So if we wish to say anything about this.
