Book Synopsis The End of Captivity? by : Tripp York
Download or read book The End of Captivity? written by Tripp York and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2015-07-30 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The End of Captivity?, Tripp York addresses how we talk about the good of other animals in light of a stark impossibility: their freedom from us. While all of us in the animal (and plant) kingdom are interdependent upon one another, humans are unique in that we are the only animals who keep other animals captive. We keep animals in zoos, sanctuaries, circuses, conservatories, aquariums, research facilities, slaughterhouses, and on our farms and in our homes. York asks what such forms of captivity say about us, and how animal captivity shapes what we imagine to be the purpose of other animals. What does the fact that elephants, tigers, and horses perform in circuses say about how we see the world? What does the reality of zoological parks say about the people who create, support, decry, protest, and patronize them? How important is wildlife conservation for the good of the earth? What does "who" we put on our plate say about how we understand the theological role of other animals? These are just a few questions York tackles as he weaves through the convoluted politics surrounding the captive animals in our midst.
Book Synopsis Even Silence Has an End by : Ingrid Betancourt
Download or read book Even Silence Has an End written by Ingrid Betancourt and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2010-09-21 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Betancourt's riveting account...is an unforgettable epic of moral courage and human endurance." -Los Angeles Times In the midst of her campaign for the Colombian presidency in 2002, Ingrid Betancourt traveled into a military-controlled region, where she was abducted by the FARC, a brutal terrorist guerrilla organization in conflict with the government. She would spend the next six and a half years captive in the depths of the Colombian jungle. Even Silence Has an End is her deeply moving and personal account of that time. The facts of her story are astounding, but it is Betancourt's indomitable spirit that drives this very special narrative-an intensely intelligent, thoughtful, and compassionate reflection on what it really means to be human.

Book Synopsis Ancient Near Eastern Texts Relating to the Old Testament with Supplement by : James B. Pritchard
Download or read book Ancient Near Eastern Texts Relating to the Old Testament with Supplement written by James B. Pritchard and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2016-03-30 with total page 744 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anthology brought together the most important historical, legal, mythological, liturgical, and secular texts of the ancient Near East, with the purpose of providing a rich contextual base for understanding the people, cultures, and literature of the Old Testament. A scholar of religious thought and biblical archaeology, James Pritchard recruited the foremost linguists, historians, and archaeologists to select and translate the texts. The goal, in his words, was "a better understanding of the likenesses and differences which existed between Israel and the surrounding cultures." Before the publication of these volumes, students of the Old Testament found themselves having to search out scattered books and journals in various languages. This anthology brought these invaluable documents together, in one place and in one language, thereby expanding the meaning and significance of the Bible for generations of students and readers. As one reviewer put it, "This great volume is one of the most notable to have appeared in the field of Old Testament scholarship this century." Princeton published a follow-up companion volume, The Ancient Near East in Pictures Relating to the Old Testament (1954), and later a one-volume abridgment of the two, The Ancient Near East: An Anthology of Texts and Pictures (1958). The continued popularity of this work in its various forms demonstrates that anthologies have a very important role to play in education--and in the mission of a university press.

Book Synopsis The Babylonian Captivity by : Lesya Ukrainka
Download or read book The Babylonian Captivity written by Lesya Ukrainka and published by Mudborn Press. This book was released on 2014-08-20 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the last of her poetic career, The Babylonian Captivity is an allegory describing the conditions of the Ukrainians under Russian influence at the end of the Nineteenth Century-which is not unlike the pressures Ukraine is under in 2014. This text is modernized from an earlier translation. Lesya Ukrainka is a pseudonym of Larisa Petrivna Kosach-Kvitka, perhaps made necessary in the beginning because the Ukrainian language was not permitted in publications at the time. The story is of Jews, not all of the same persuasion, in exile in Babylon, in woeful conditions. The main character is Eleazar, a singer and harpist, who is challenged by the others of his community for serving the Babylonian masters with his songs. He defends his activities and helps to redefine the situation they are all in. The play is designed for reading rather than staging in a theater, and is in looser format than strictly poetic lines, although Eleazar does perform a few songs in measured lines. The reason for publishing it now is to provide for a wider audience a historical dimension to current affairs in one part of the world rarely portrayed in European fiction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a study of one of the most powerful revelations God has given me. Delivering captives in the traditional manner requires a lot of time, dedication, physical and spiritual strength, a price few are willing to pay. The battle can be fierce due to the ruthless manifestations of the demons. The reality is many times this type of deliverance is unsuccessful. However, there is an easier, more efficient way to deliver people and it is how Jesus did it. Jesus didn't come to earth simply to save us and to die for our sins, but also to give us freedom in every area of our life. He conquered the devil's empire and set the captives free. This goes beyond casting out demons of the occult, drugs, alcohol, etc. Captivity plays a role in the lives of all mankind
