Set in Monaco, this is a story about a man who had it all but his past ensures he couldn’t acquire what he yearned the most…and a woman, whose heart wasn’t up for bargaining, no matter the cost. A tug-of war of seduction, of wills, of pride. A whirlwind affair that will change both of their lives forever. This bundle includes three novels: Bartered, Unhinged & Vanquished. BARTERED: A woman could be… Everything. Anything. Nothing. I was a connoisseur of beautiful things, women included. I didn’t just have one, but three—all exotic, stunning and would do anything I asked. My life was grand. It was perfect and I was content with it all, until a little minx came along. The second our eyes clashed, giving me a glimpse of her violet blue depths that had a mixture of stubbornness and will but with a hint of something else… Choices were made. Decisions were done. And for the very first time in my life, I was challenged with something risky, merely igniting the animal in me. UNHINGED: He came into my life in the most unconventional way, turning my world upside down when I least expected it. He was my dark knight amidst the chaos that was my life. His persistence in conquering me tested my resistance, and at one point, I thought I had prevailed. However, the immediate turn of events left me shocked and alone. He left me when I wasn't ready to walk away. For months, I searched for him, stalking the internet for any news of him, hoping that one day I would get to see him again. Nevertheless, he was great at covering his tracks, and I was left resorting to tactics I hadn't considered before. I simply wanted another chance. He had wanted me once. He could want me again, couldn't he? He left a gaping hole in my life, and I knew nothing could ever fix it, except him. I was will-ing to put myself out there for him to relish, criticize, and devour at his will. The heart wants what it wants, and it wanted Hugo Xavier. VANQUISHED: Puzzled by Hugo’s mercurial attitude, the damning bed of flowers and Julien’s warning, Isobel found herself in chilling territory. Stuck between vowing to find the real reason behind it all and fearing for her life, Isobel must summon the courage to fight for the man she loved or lose everything she held precious in her heart.

Book excerpt: Two of the stories you are about to read have a grain of truth in them. The Encounter, my first story, is based on some of my family members! My brother was in study to become a Roman Catholic priest, actually two times, once as a young man, then many years later as an older man. Both times he approached ordination and left the church. The next two stories are to give the reader a lighter side of the church and its traditions. Especially the story, 1955 or Confession is Good for the Soul. I am the young boy with the clicker. We actually did attend morning mass like I wrote about. Also, the nuns in their black habits were to me, a small boy, a fearsome sight and not to be on the wrong side of. I really did join the Marine Corps, but I was not the military type. I did this more so to honor the family tradition on my mothers side of the family. I hope you enjoy reading these stories, as I have enjoyed writing them.

Book excerpt: “Great storytelling from Steve Arterburn! Read The Encounter and learn things about yourself that you never knew were there.”—Andy Andrews, New York Times best-selling author, The Traveler’s Gift and The Noticer The past can be a dark and haunting place - full of secrets and mysteries too deep, too painful to confess. For Jonathan Rush, a wealthy and famous entrepreneur, this is an agonizing and startling reality — one he never knew existed in his life until now. On a mission to Fairbanks, Alaska, to uncover the truth behind his mother’s abandonment when he was only four years old, Jonathan comes face-to-face with his unresolved bitterness as well as a mysterious woman named Mercy who holds the key to unlocking the secrets of his past. Somehow he must convince Mercy to confide in him, learn how to forgive his mother, and — even more painful — learn how to forgive himself. The Encounter, from best-selling author, counselor, and speaker Stephen Arterburn, artfully reveals the power of your story, the fierce need for acceptance, and the true hope of healing. Discover in its pages the radical joys of forgiveness both toward others as well as from the ultimate healer and forgiver: Jesus Christ. Through the truth and hope revealed in this gripping parable, learn to step out from the darkness of a painful past and into the healing light of a forgiven future.

Religious discourse -- especially about politics and public affairs -- is increasingly polarized; there is much contestation, but little conversation. If truths are to be tested, however, there is no substitute for dialogue. Arising out of conferences sponsored by the Center on Religion & Society in New York City, the Encounter Series presents the dialogue of a diverse group of theologians, ethicists, philosophers, and public policy experts from across the political and religious spectrum. - Back cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Politics of the Encounter is a spirited interrogation of the city as a site of both theoretical inquiry and global social struggle. The city, writes Andy Merrifield, remains "important, virtually and materially, for progressive politics." And yet, he notes, more than forty years have passed since Henri Lefebvre advanced the powerful ideas that still undergird much of our thinking about urbanization and urban society. Merrifield rethinks the city in light of the vast changes to our planet since 1970, when Lefebvre's seminal Urban Revolution was first published. At the same time, he expands on Lefebvre's notion of "the right to the city," which was first conceived in the wake of the 1968 student uprising in Paris. We need to think less of cities as "entities with borders and clear demarcations between what's inside and what's outside" and emphasize instead the effects of "planetary urbanization," a concept of Lefebvre's that Merrifield makes relevant for the ways we now experience the urban. The city—from Tahrir Square to Occupy Wall Street—seems to be the critical zone in which a new social protest is unfolding, yet dissenters' aspirations are transcending the scale of the city physically and philosophically. Consequently, we must shift our perspective from "the right to the city" to "the politics of the encounter," says Merrifield. We must ask how revolutionary crowds form, where they draw their energies from, what kind of spaces they occur in—and what kind of new spaces they produce.

Book excerpt: Part of the Jewish Encounter series Taking in everything from the Kingdom of David to the Oslo Accords, Ruth Wisse offers a radical new way to think about the Jewish relationship to power. Traditional Jews believed that upholding the covenant with God constituted a treaty with the most powerful force in the universe; this later transformed itself into a belief that, unburdened by a military, Jews could pursue their religious mission on a purely moral plain. Wisse, an eminent professor of comparative literature at Harvard, demonstrates how Jewish political weakness both increased Jewish vulnerability to scapegoating and violence, and unwittingly goaded power-seeking nations to cast Jews as perpetual targets. Although she sees hope in the State of Israel, Wisse questions the way the strategies of the Diaspora continue to drive the Jewish state, echoing Abba Eban's observation that Israel was the only nation to win a war and then sue for peace. And then she draws a persuasive parallel to the United States today, as it struggles to figure out how a liberal democracy can face off against enemies who view Western morality as weakness. This deeply provocative book is sure to stir debate both inside and outside the Jewish world. Wisse's narrative offers a compelling argument that is rich with history and bristling with contemporary urgency.
