Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Best Review at the Catholic Press Association Convention Studies of young American Catholics over the last three decades suggest a growing crisis in the Catholic Church: compared to their elders, young Catholics are looking to the Church less as they form their identities, and fewer of them can even explain what it means to be Catholic and why that matters. Young Catholic America, the latest book based on the groundbreaking National Study of Youth and Religion, explores a crucial stage in the life of Catholics. Drawing on in-depth surveys and interviews of Catholics and ex-Catholics ages 18 to 23--a demographic commonly known as early "emerging adulthood"--leading sociologist Christian Smith and his colleagues offer a wealth of insight into the wide variety of religious practices and beliefs among young Catholics today, the early influences and life-altering events that lead them to embrace the Church or abandon it, and how being Catholic affects them as they become full-fledged adults. Beyond its rich collection of statistical data, the book includes vivid case studies of individuals spanning a full decade, as well as insight into the twentieth-century events that helped to shape the Church and its members in America. An innovative contribution to what we know about religion in the United States and the evolving Catholic Church, Young Catholic America is the definitive source for anyone seeking to understand what it means to be young and Catholic in America today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new Catholic Church is emerging in the West, one that is very different from the Church before 1960. This book describes the new Church-in-the-making - its new position in society, its new structuring and workings, and its new frame of mind. The book also looks in a prospective way at some basic issues the Church has to deal with, such as imagining the Church in advanced modernity, attracting both youth and adults, rebuilding local communities, refashioning liturgy, and rethinking pastoral guidance. The book is the result of an interdisciplinary endeavor by philosophers, sociologists, and theologians. (Series: Tilburg Theological Studies / Tilburger Theologische Studien - Vol. 5)

These surveys depict trends in Catholics' views of the sacraments, church authority, church teachings in the area of sex and gender, and strength of Catholic identity. This book suggests that the future will see more Catholics making decisions about their own faith and fewer Catholics who are fervently committed to church life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Book Award–winning author “seizes the moment of Catholicism’s sexual-abuse crisis” to call for a Vatican III (Publishers Weekly). Elaborating on “A Call for Vatican III” from his New York Times–bestseller Constantine’s Sword: The Church and the Jews, James Carroll proposes a clear agenda for reform, to help committed but concerned Catholics understand the most essential issues facing their Church. Carroll moves beyond current events to suggest new ways for Catholics to approach Scripture, Jesus, and power, and he looks at the daunting challenges facing the Church in a world of diverse beliefs and contentious religious fervor. His thought-provoking case for democracy within the Church illustrates why lay people have already initiated change. Carroll shows that all Catholics—parishioners, priests, bishops, men and women—have an equal stake in ensuring the Church’s future. “The boisterous collapse of trust in the Catholic hierarchy during the pedophile scandals makes it not only important but imperative to heed this eloquent call for a new Ecumenical (this time truly ecumenical) Council.” —Garry Wills, author of Why I Am a Catholic

Here it is - the first new Catechism of the Catholic Church in more than 400 years, a complete summary of what Catholics around the world commonly believe. The Catechism draws on the Bible, the Mass, the Sacraments, Church tradition and teaching, and the lives of saints. It comes with a complete index, footnotes and cross-references for a fuller understanding of every subject. The word catechism means "instruction" - this book will serve as the standard for all future catechisms. Using the tradition of explaining what the Church believes (the Creed), what she celebrates (the Sacraments), what she lives (the Commandments), and what she prays (the Lord's Prayer), the Catechism of the Catholic Church offers challenges for believers and answers for all those interested in learning about the mystery of the Catholic faith. The Catechism of the Catholic Church is a positive, coherent and contemporary map for our spiritual journey toward transformation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this expanded and thoroughly updated English edition of the Italian edition (2008), Massimo Faggioli offers us a history and broader context of the so-called ecclesial movements of which Focolare, Community of Sant'Egidio, Neocatechumenal Way, Legionaries of Christ, Communion and Liberation, and Opus Dei are only some of the most recognizable names. Their history goes back to the period following the First Vatican Council, crosses Vatican II, and develops throughout the twentieth century. It is a history that prepares the movements' rise in the last three decades, from John Paul II to Francis. These movements are a complex phenomenon that shapes the Church now more than before, and they play a key role for the future of Catholicism as a global community, in transition from a Eurocentric tradition to a world Church.

That's why this readable and engaging introduction to Catholicism deftly combines personal narrative with rich theology and current scholarship. Dennis Doyle's The Catholic Church in a Changing World: A Vatican II Inspired Approach invites readers to consider their own beliefs while studying the contemporary teachings of the Catholic Church. Organized around two central documents of Vatican II, Lumen gentium and Gaudium et spes, the text presents contemporary theological and ecclesiological ideas with nuance, clarity, and fairness, especially regarding issues that might be polarizing. With short chapters, sidebars, recommendations for further reading, and an ecumenical and inclusive voice, The Catholic Church in a Changing World updates a proven and popular text to meet the needs of the modern classroom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dear Reader: I believe this book is unique. No other book I’ve found is even remotely similar. It identifies and discusses issues and problems currently facing the Catholic Church in America. The Church in America is beset with difficulties. Catholic elementary schools are closing. There is a severe shortage of priests and religious sisters. Church attendance is dropping precipitously. There are lingering effects from the child sex abuse scandal among priests. Catholic couples in their child-bearing years face a moral dilemma in regard to birth control. There seems to be a growing dissonance between Church authority and the laity, in which primacy of conscience is replacing obedience to the Church. I address all of these matters and others. At the same time, I have learned there is much to be gained by being Catholic. Two recently published books analyzing biblical scripture have convinced me that Jesus Christ really is God, and that therefore I can attain salvation through following his precepts. For all its difficulties, the Church does a lot of good. Pope Francis provides outstanding moral leadership at a time this is desperately needed. The Church’s charitable activities at a parish and diocesan level are impressive. At a personal level, my conversion has helped me immeasurably by giving me peace of mind. During my conversion and first two years as a Catholic, I picked interesting subjects to study such as the Marian apparitions, the life of Thomas Merton, how the Church canonizes saints, the insights of C. S. Lewis about prayer, and Martin Luther’s condemnation of praying to Mary. I believe you also will find these interesting and hopefully helpful for you in some ways. Respectfully, Donald Johnson

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In A People Adrift, a prominent Catholic thinker states bluntly that the Catholic Church in the United States must transform itself or suffer irreversible decline. Peter Steinfels shows how even before the recent revelations about sexual abuse by priests, the explosive combination of generational change and the thinning ranks of priests and nuns was creating a grave crisis of leadership and identity. This groundbreaking book offers an analysis not just of the church's immediate troubles but of less visible, more powerful forces working below the surface of an institution that provides a spiritual identity for 65 million Americans and spans the nation with its parishes, schools, colleges and universities, hospitals, clinics, and social service agencies. In A People Adrift, Steinfels warns that entrenched liberals and conservatives are trapped in a "theo-logical gridlock" that often ignores what in fact goes on in families, parishes, classrooms, voting booths, and Catholic organizations of all types. Above all, he insists, the altered Catholic landscape demands a new agenda for leadership, from the selection of bishops and the rethinking of the priesthood to the thorough preparation and genuine incorporation of a lay leadership that is already taking over key responsibilities in Catholic institutions. Catholicism exerts an enormous cultural and political presence in American life. No one interested in the nation's moral, intellectual, and political future can be indifferent to the fate of what has been one of the world's most vigorous churches -- a church now severely challenged.
