Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The adjective "emergent" is applied to a recent school trend which originated in dissatisfaction with what the junior high school has become, not with its original concept of function. The emergent middle school is "a school program planned for a range of older children, preadolescents, and early adolescents that builds upon the elementary school program for earlier childhood and in turn is built upon by the high school's program for adolescence" (p, 5) encompassing grades 5-8 or 6-8. These years are a "crucial" time for establishing basic attitudes toward learning, best served with an articulated bridging curriculum which would introduce intellectual challenge and a wide range of facilities. There must be much provision for individualization, for at no other level of schooling is there such a wide range of social, physical, and intellectual development. The creation of a new school level with a different name will facilitate innovation and attract a capable staff.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent educational reform initiatives such as the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) largely fail to address the needs--or tap into the unique resources--of students who are developing literacy skills in both English and a home language. This book discusses ways to meet the challenges that current standards pose for teaching emergent bilingual students in grades K-8. Leading experts describe effective, standards-aligned instructional approaches and programs expressly developed to promote bilingual learners' academic vocabulary, comprehension, speaking, writing, and content learning. Innovative policy recommendations and professional development approaches are also presented.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Sponsored by the Middle Level Education Research SIG and the National Middle School Association) The Young Adolescent and the Middle School focuses on issues related to the nature of young adolescence and the intersection of young adolescence with middle level schooling. This volume of the Handbook of Research in Middle Level Education marks the sixth installment in the series. The Handbook series, begun in 2001 by Vince Anfara, the series editor, has addressed varying thematic issues important to middle level education research. This volume, The Young Adolescent and the Middle School, focuses on the unique developmental needs of young adolescents and the role of the middle school in attending to these needs. The contributing authors in this volume address one of three developmental areas critical to young adolescents—physical development, intellectual/cognitive development, or social and personal development—and how these developmental characteristics affect the educational environment and the organization of middle schools.
