Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that the throne motif constitutes the major interpretive key to the complex structure and theology of the book of Revelation. In the first part of the book, Gallusz examines the throne motif in the Old Testament, Jewish literature and Graeco-Roman sources. He moves on to devote significant attention to the throne of God texts of Revelation and particularly to the analysis of the throne-room vision (chs. 4&5), which is foundational for the development of the throne motif. Gallusz reveals how Revelation utilizes the throne motif as the central principle for conveying a theological message, since it appears as the focus of the author from the outset to the climax of the drama. The book concludes with an investigation into the rhetorical impact of the motif and its contribution to the theology of Revelation. Gallusz finally shows that the throne, what it actually represents, is of critical significance both to Revelation's theism and to God's dealing with the problem of evil in the course of human history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classic "All" series books have graced the shelves of pastors, students, and laypeople alike for decades. "All about The Second Coming" continues in the series' tradition of offering a faithful and comprehensive treatment of biblical subjects. Herbert Lockyer opens this work with disturbing words: "The doctrine of the Second Coming is one of the most abused and distorted in the Bible." To correct these abuses and distortions, he undertakes a detailed study of the book of Revelation. "Let us," he says, "read what the Bible has to say about Christ's coming, taking every reference at its face value." Section by section--sometimes verse by verse--he traces what this mysterious book says about the history of the world from Pentecost to the Rapture of the Church, from the Tribulation to the Great White Throne. He sheds light on often-troubling images and descriptions, helping readers feel as if they understand the message of Revelation. An appendix describes the rich significance of the many numbers appearing in Revelation, and the scripture index aids readers in finding answers to their specific questions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The launching of this hitherto unpublished book by the great nineteenth-century British traveler Edward William Lane (1801-76), a name known to almost everyone in all the many fields of Middle East studies, is a major publishing event. Lane was the author of a number of highly influential works: An Account of the Manners and Customs of the Modern Egyptians (1836), his translation of The Thousand and One Nights (1839-41), Selections from the Kur-an (1843), and the Arabic-English Lexicon (1863-93). Yet one of his greatest works was never published: after years of labor and despite an enthusiastic reception by the publishing firm of John Murray in 1831, publication of his first book, Description of Egypt, was delayed and eventually dropped, mainly for financial reasons. The manuscript was sold to the British Library by Lane's widow in 1891, and has only now been salvaged for publication by Dr. Jason Thompson, nearly 170 years after its completion. This enormously important book, which takes the form of a journey through Egypt from north to south, with descriptions of all the ancient monuments and contemporary life that Lane explored along the way, will be of immense interest to both ancient and modern historians of Egypt, and will become an essential companion to his Manners and Customs. ''Jason Thompson's exact and dedicated edition deserves much praise.''-Astene Newsletter, June 2002. ''Thompson, a historian at AUC, has done signal service in taking a manuscript dating from 1831 and preparing it for publication so many years later; AUC Press deserves praise for making so major a work available, and at so reasonable a price.''-Daniel Pipes, Middle East Quarterly, June 2001. ''In all, the appearance of this major work of scholarship at this late date is a major boon to the study of Egypt's history between the pharaohs and 18280.''-Daniel Pipes, Middle East Quarterly, June 2001.
