Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1977, the current editors contributed a review article on behavioral group therapy to a volume of Hersen, Miller, and Eisler's Progress in Behavior Modi fication series (1977). At that time we noted that, despite the advantages to both clinicians and clients of conducting behavioral treatments in groups, clinical developments and research in this area were still at a relatively rudimen tary level. The majority of studies in the behavioral group therapy literature we reviewed reported the direct transfer of an individual behavior therapy pro cedure, such as systematic desensitization, to a group of clients with homoge neous problems, such as snake phobia or test anxiety. Groups were used in many studies merely to generate sufficient numbers of subjects to allow various types of interventions to be compared, rather than to examine group process variables per se. Only a limited amount of attention had been given to whether these group interaction variables (such as group discussion, sharing ideas and feelings, and mutual feedback and reinforcement) might enhance individually oriented procedures applied in a group. The 8 years since this original chapter was written have seen a significant growth in both the breadth and depth of clinical research and work in the behavioral group therapy field. This growth was documented in part in a three volume series on behavioral group therapy by the current editors (Upper & Ross, 1979, 1980, 1981).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking volume shows how the clarity and discipline of cognitive therapy can be applied to the treatment of family of origin issues, such as alcoholism and incest, without compromising depth and clinical sophistication. Treating Family Of Origin Problems begins with a discussion of the characteristics of dysfunctional families and an overview of the cognitive model. Subsequent chapters explore coping strategies, goals of recovery and treatment, diagnostic considerations, and assessment of family of origin issues. Ways in which the therapist's own family of origin issues and the therapist's posture can influence the treatment process are addressed in a discussion of various metacommunicative elements that can affect the client's ability to use treatment constructively. Throughout, illustrative clinical material shows how clinicians can utilize embedded messages and other techniques to circumvent resistance; confront various types of acting-out behavior while remaining in a supportive, collaborative posture; and provide a consistent focus in treatment, highlighting the underlying mechanisms that cause distress without becoming mired in unproductive attention to the presenting symptoms. The volume concludes with discussions of building coping strategies, utilizing relationship material, and variations in the recovery process.

Book excerpt: Handbook of Behavior Therapy with Sexual Problems, Volume II: Approaches to Specific Problems compiles case studies illustrating the use of techniques as they are applied to specific sexual problems. This publication is divided into two parts. Part I discusses approaches to the problems often encountered by men and women in heterosexual intercourse. For men, the two major areas included are problems with achieving or maintaining erections during sexual activities and problems associated with ejaculation. The problem areas covered for women are problems in orgasmic functioning and problems of painful or difficult intercourse. Part 2 elaborates sexual problems associated with undesired sexual object choices. The homosexual, fetishistic, cross-dressing, exhibitionistic, pedophiliac, sadomasochistic, voyeuristic and miscellaneous behaviors are also covered. This publication is a good reference for behaviorally-oriented clinicians and practitioners who are attempting to alleviate the suffering associated with their clients’ sexual problems.

Book excerpt: Eating disorders, addictions, and substance use disorders are each challenging in their own right, but they also commonly co-occur, causing major challenges for clinicians. This book presents cutting-edge research on the overlap of these complex disorders and reviews integrative assessment strategies and treatment approaches, including enhanced cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, abstinence approaches, motivational enhancement, mindfulness meditation, and pharmacotherapy. The issue of whether eating-disordered behaviors such as dieting, binge eating, and excessive exercise are merely other forms of addictive behavior is examined. The authors argue both for and against the concept of food addiction in research, clinical treatment, and public policy. The book will be of interest to psychiatrists, addiction medicine physicians, mental health/substance abuse clinicians, dieticians, researchers, and those affected by the disorders.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of the foundations of Chinese psychotherapy, based on a full consideration of Confucian, Taoist, and Buddhist teachings. Serving as a reliable and practical guide to coping with life’s adversities, the book offers therapeutic techniques to guide clinical practice based on the potential mutual enrichment of these teachings and current psychotherapies, research, and practice. It aims to guide readers towards authentic, durable happiness with novel approaches to a variety of mental health problems. Among the topics addressed: Cultural heritages and mental health Confucian, Taoist, and Buddhist techniques for self-enlightenment psychotherapy Psi mechanisms and related training models Foundations of Chinese Psychotherapies combines modern clinical methods and traditional teachings to form a unique approach to mental health and well-being. It will be a valuable resource for mental health professionals and others who seek to intervene in a variety of mental health problems. "A systematic introduction to indigenous Chinese psychotherapy is long overdue.Explicating human nature as envisioned by traditional Chinese thinkers, this book is a timely answer to the increasingly contested question of what it means to be human in an era when gene editing keeps tinkering nature’s design. " Louise Sundararajan, Ph.D., Ed.D., Fellow of the American Psychological Association; Chair and founder of the Task Force on Indigenous Psychology. "This is an important book. It builds on the work of K.-S. Yang and K.-K. Hwang in their hope for an indigenous Chinese psychology. This book is the next installment in that progression. The world-wide community of scholars needs to know what an indigenous psychology looks like that is sensitive to the insights of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism. This book makes that contribution and it is my hope that it will be widely read." Alvin Dueck, PhD, Distinguished Senior Professor of Psychology, Fuller Graduate School of Psychology, USA Foundations of Chinese Psychotherapies is a valuable introduction to how the Confucian, Taoist, and Buddhist traditions understand the human psyche, and in particular psychic abilities. Yung-Jong Shiah has a unique perspective on these topics, having been trained in both Eastern and Western traditions, and through his deep familiarity with how science has been used to study these intriguing topics. " Dean Radin MS PhD, Chief Scientist, Institute of Noetic Sciences, USA and author Real Magic (2018) and other books.
