Book Synopsis Florence Nightingale and the Medical Men by : Lynn McDonald
Download or read book Florence Nightingale and the Medical Men written by Lynn McDonald and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2022-07-15 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Florence Nightingale is known as a hospital reformer, a social reformer, and the founder of professional nursing; few realize that she worked closely with doctors on these issues. As Nightingale’s first supporters and colleagues, doctors contributed to reducing the high death rates in Crimean War hospitals and learned from the consequential reforms. Beginning with an overview of Nightingale’s life and continuing with an exploration of her Crimean War work with army doctors, her post-Crimea work with civilian doctors, and her collaborations with the peacetime army and with army doctors in later wars, Lynn McDonald details the involvement of doctors in Nightingale’s legacy. At a time when hospitals’ death rates were universally high (including at top teaching hospitals), Nightingale formed connections with leading public health doctors and produced heavily cited work on safer hospital design. Her later writings cover her relations with early women doctors and the controversy over state regulation of nurses, bacteriology, and germ theory; here, McDonald argues against flawed secondary literature and the myth of Nightingale’s lifelong opposition to germ theory. The final chapter discusses the legendary nurse’s enduring legacy. Florence Nightingale and the Medical Men provides timely insight into Nightingale’s principles of disease prevention, data visualization, and the impacts of high disease and death rates – issues that persist in the global health crises of the twenty-first century.
Book Synopsis Florence Nightingale on Social Change in India by : Gérard Vallée
Download or read book Florence Nightingale on Social Change in India written by Gérard Vallée and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2007-12-06 with total page 975 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social Change in India shows the shift of focus that occurred during Florence Nightingale’s more than forty years of work on public health in India. While the focus in the preceding volume, Health in India, was top-down reform, notably in the Royal Commission on the Sanitary State of the Army in India, this book documents concrete proposals for self-government, especially at the municipal level, and the encouragement of leading Indian nationals themselves. Famine and related epidemics continue to be issues, demonstrating the need for public works like irrigation and for greater self-help measures like “health missioners” and self-government. The book includes sections on village and town sanitation, the condition and status of women, land tenure, rent reform, and education and political evolution toward self-rule. Nightingale’s publications on these subjects appeared increasingly in Indian journals. Correspondence shows Nightingale continuing to work behind the scenes, pressing viceroys, governors, and Cabinet ministers to take up the cause of sanitary reform. Her collaboration with Lord Ripon, viceroy 1880-84, was crucial, for he was a great promoter of Indian self-government. Social Change in India features much new material, including a substantial number of long-missing letters to Lady Dufferin, wife of the viceroy 1884-88, on the provision of medical care for women in India, health education, and the promotion of women doctors. Biographical sketches of major collaborators, a glossary of Indian terms, and a list of Indian place names are also provided. Currently, Volumes 1 to 11 are available in e-book version by subscription or from university and college libraries through the following vendors: Canadian Electronic Library, Ebrary, MyiLibrary, and Netlibrary.

Book Synopsis The Making of Indian English Literature by : Subhendu Mund
Download or read book The Making of Indian English Literature written by Subhendu Mund and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-07-08 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Making of Indian English Literature brings together seventeen well-researched essays of Subhendu Mund with a long introduction by the author historicising the development of the Indian writing in English while exploring its identity among the many appellations tagged to it. The volume demonstrates, contrary to popular perceptions, that before the official introduction of English education in India, Indians had already tried their hands in nearly all forms of literature: poetry, fiction, drama, essay, biography, autobiography, book review, literary criticism and travel writing. Besides translation activities, Indians had also started editing and publishing periodicals in English before 1835. Through archival research the author brings to discussion a number of unknown and less discussed texts which contributed to the development of the genre. The work includes exclusive essays on such early poets and writers as Kylas Chunder Dutt, Shoshee Chunder Dutt, Toru Dutt, Mirza Moorad Alee Beg, Krupabai Satthianadhan, Swami Vivekananda, H. Dutt, and Sita Chatterjee; and historiographical studies on the various aspects of the genre. The author also examines the strategies used by the early writers to indianise the western language and the form of the novel. The present volume also demonstrates how from the very beginning Indian writing in English had a subtle nationalist agenda and created a space for protest literature. The Making of Indian English Literature will prove an invaluable addition to the studies in Indian writing in English as a source of reference and motivation for further research. Please note: Taylor & Francis does not sell or distribute the Hardback in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Book Synopsis First Book in Hygiene by : William Otterbein Krohn
Download or read book First Book in Hygiene written by William Otterbein Krohn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-17 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Book in Hygiene: A Primer of Physiology In these lessons for young children simple language is used in the presentation of such facts about the structure of the body and its functions as are necessary for clear and definite knowledge of the general laws of health, including the effects of alcohol and narcotics. This book is for the use of pupils just beginning to learn something of the care the human body requires in order to insure the full enjoyment of health. The value of a primary book upon any subject depends both upon the language used and the varied forms of appeal to the child's mind, in order that his interest may be aroused. In this book there are few complex sentences. There is, also, such frequent alter nation in story, written exercise, and observation, picture, memory, and reading lessons that the subject-matter cannot become trite. The lessons are so logically arranged, and so pedagogically co-ordinated, that every sentence, every ques tion, every picture, every poem, every written exercise, forms a vital part in the presentation of hygienic law as an educational whole, in a form most readily comprehended by the child. Anatomy, strictly speaking, is a science the study of which requires the more mature mind of the advanced high school or college student. Only such basal facts of thebody's structure are here presented as are necessary for a clear understanding of the laws of health.
