The epidermis of the skin is composed of cells of the same general kind grouped together; it is therefore a tissue. Muscle and bone are tissues, as are also tendons, many glands, and the components of the nervous system. Cytology, contrariwise, is concerned with the minute components of cells, the parts of the nucleus, the minute structure of the living matter, the nature of cell organs, and the like. Embryology has to do with the young or developmental stages of animals. When it is purely descriptive, dealing only with the structures of these young stages, not with the processes going on in them, it is morphological in its nature. In creating subdivisions of zoology, the several morphological branches mentioned in the preceding paragraphs have occasionally been elevated to equal rank with the divisions described below; but Since they do not differ in principle, all being concerned with structure, it seems better to combine all of them under the Single head, morphology. Morphology is historically the oldest of the divisions of zoology, Since in early times practically all that was known of animals was their structure. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Biology, With Special Reference to Their Role in the Lives of Animals IT IS the conviction of the writer that the specific objectives of a gen eral course in Biology for students in colleges of Liberal Arts are three: To impart such principles and concepts as will enable the student to appreciate the unity In Nature and the place of living organisms, including Man, in that unity; to instill an understanding of the major laws that govern living organisms and a recognition of the operation of these laws in determining broad social and eco nomic controls in human society; to impart useful information and information of such character that a habit of observing caution in the face of all forms of scientific and intellectual quackery will be developed. A fourth objective that is self-evident and which General Biology holds in common with many other academic disciplines is the development of student power of clear and logical reasoning based upon accurate observation and established facts. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Animal Physiology, Chiefly Human Animal Physiology is "essentially a Science of Designs and Final Causes." Probably no subject, if taught with even moderate intelligence, can be rendered so interesting, or made to rouse the dormant energies of the intellect of young people, and of those previously untrained in the method of scientific inquiry, as that of Human Physiology. Certainly the study of no other science opens up to the mind so many wonders, solves so many human mysteries, or brings home to the mind so many proofs of the "reign of Law," and of the wise and beneficent design of this universe, or teaches so many principles which lie at the basis of human health, morals, and well-being, as that of Human Physiology. On these considerations alone, - and many other most powerful ones might be urged, - "Human Physiology" must claim a leading position in any system which professes to educate the people soundly. Very considerable experience as a Teacher of Physiology, with the youthful and adult of both sexes, has proved to the writer the facility with which the viva voce teaching of Elementary Physiology may be made "perfectly sound and thorough," when supplemented with the aid of good diagrams, a good text-book, and the free use of the black-board, and of the lungs, heart, kidney, eye, &c., of the sheep, and of such other objects as may be readily obtained from the butcher, for the illustration of the general structure of the corresponding organs of the human body; while the body of the living frog or tadpole is amply sufficient to illustrate the general phenomena of the circulation and the properties of the living tissues. The teacher should also occasionally dissect a small animal, as a rabbit, recently killed with chloroform, before his class. A Human Skeleton and a cheap Microscope will likewise be found invaluable aids to the earnest teacher. A general impression prevails, among the candidates presenting themselves at the Government Science Examinations, that it is easier to pass with the same actual knowledge in the Second Class, Advanced Stage, than in the First Class, Elementary Stage. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Zoology We know that a bird eats, moves, and breathes, and that its blood circulates; but plants also eat, respire through their leaves, have a circulation of sap, and some are endowed with locomotive powers. When we descend to the lower forms of animal and vegetable life, the points of similarity become almost identical; the swift-mov ing diatom so resembling some of the lowest animal forms that it is well-nigh impossible to distinguish be tween them. The plants, however, have no nervous sys tem, no special organs Of circulation or digestion that characterize the majority of animal forms, so that an ani mal differs mainly from a plant in possessing, as a rule, a nervous system and special organs of Circulation and digestion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Biology: A Practical d104-Book Correlating Botany, Zoölogy, and Human Physiology If the work begins with the spring term, the introductory chap ters may be taken, then the seed and seedling, root, stem, leaf, flower, and fruit, reserving the treatment of the cell, simple plants, and the bacteria until the end of the term. This allows taking up the thread in the fall where it was dropped, with an introduction through the balanced aquarium and the hay infusion to the rela tions existing between plants and animals. The best order of topics in the fall seems to be protozoa, some simple metazoan, insects (taken while living insects may still be obtained), then such other groups of invertebrates as desired, the year's work again culmi nating with the vertebrates and biology as applied to the human animal. These distinctions are easily under stood, and have been universally acknowledged to be confor mable to nature. Vitality distinguishes the one - the want of vitality characterizes the other. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Biology of the Frog The present book is the outgrowth of a course of lectures delivered during the past six years at the Uni versity of Michigan. This course with the accompanying laboratory work was based on the frog, which was chosen as a convenient form with which to introduce students to a knowledge of the morphology, physiology, and life his tory of vertebrate animals. In writing this book I have had in mind the needs of students, such as most of those taking this course, who have had some preliminary work in general biology, but who have forgotten most of what little of the elements of physiology they may have learned in the schools. A certain amount of physiology of a more or less general nature has accordingly been introduced in addition to the descriptions of the special functions of the various organs of the body. The book is more suitable for use as a text in college or university classes than in high schools, although it is hoped that it will prove of service to teachers in high schools where the frog is studied in the course in zoology.
