Book excerpt: Acclaimed author Elizabeth Haydon returns with a heartbreaking tale of love and valor in The Hollow Queen, the eighth installment of her USA Today bestselling Symphony of Ages series that began with Rhapsody. Beset on all sides by the forces of the merchant emperor Talquist, the Cymrian Alliance finds itself in desperate straits. Rhapsody herself has joined the battle, wielding the Daystar Clarion, leaving her True Name in hiding with her infant son. Ashe tries to enlist the aid of the Sea Mages. Within their Citadel of Scholarship lies the White Ivory tower, a spire that could hold the key to unraveling the full extent of Talquist's machinations. Achmed journeys to the reportedly unassailable palace of Jierna Tal, to kill emperor Talquist—all the while knowing that even if he succeeds, it may not be enough to stop the momentum of the war. As they struggle to untangle the web of Talquist's treachery, the leaders of the Cymrian alliance are met with obstacles at every turn. Rhapsody soon realizes that the end of this war will come at an unimaginable price: the lives of those she holds dearest.

Those who continue to fight to preserve the light of hope are told of a prophecy that speaks of an Immortal's offspring, a demi-immortal, born on the Holy Day when the light shines the longest, possessing the unlimited power of the Champion of Light. It is told that the Champion of Light will rise to defeat the minions of darkness and restore the light of hope back into the hearts of hopeless mortals. Book I begins the saga of the Champion of Light's journey in becoming the hero who will challenge the Dark Immortals to maintain the cosmic balance between good and evil; light and darkness.

Book excerpt: In a time long forgotten, where the echoes of creation still whispered through the mountains, flowed through the rivers, flickered in the flames, and whistled through the air, the world was in harmony. The ancient elemental powers of Fire, Earth, Water, and Air existed in balance, their rhythmic dance guiding the world's rhythm, their silent symphony sculpting its destiny. But as ages passed, a discord was born. The elements began to wane, their harmony disrupted, their dance faltered. The world was on the verge of chaos, teetering on the brink of destruction. In the midst of this growing tumult, whispers of an old prophecy surfaced, tales of four heroes, each chosen by an element, destined to restore balance. In the Scorched Plains, where fiery spirits roamed and the ground kissed the sun, a flame-haired girl was born under the shadow of an erupting volcano. Her spirit was as fierce as the flames she danced with, her destiny intertwined with the element of Fire. This was Mirah, the fire wielder, the first hero of the prophecy. In the Verdant Woods, where nature sang and the earth whispered its secrets, a girl was born amidst the roots of the ancient Mother Tree. Her heart beat in time with the earth, her soul mirrored its patience and wisdom. This was Eolande, the earth wielder, the second hero of the prophecy. In the Ocean's Cradle, where the sea sang songs of old and the waves told stories of time, a boy was born during the greatest storm the world had ever seen. His spirit ebbed and flowed with the tide, his heart beat in harmony with the ocean's rhythm. This was Draven, the water wielder, the third hero of the prophecy. In the Skyreach Mountains, where the winds danced and the sky kissed the earth, a boy was born under the dancing aurora. His heart was as free as the winds he commanded, his soul as light as the air he breathed. This was Iolan, the air wielder, the fourth and final hero of the prophecy. In a world teetering on the brink of chaos, four unlikely heroes emerged, chosen by the elements, bound by a shared destiny. Their journey would take them through trials and tribulations, through the depths of the oceans and the heart of the forests, to the fiery deserts and the soaring mountains, to the very core of the world. Their path was fraught with danger and uncertainty, teeming with mythical creatures and ancient mysteries. But the prophecy had foretold their coming, their elemental powers held the key to restoring balance. Along the way, they would uncover the lost artifacts, reveal the secrets of the prophecy, and forge bonds as strong and enduring as the elements themselves. This is the tale of the Elemental Prophecy, an epic saga of unity, balance, and friendship. It's a tale of courage and hope, of trials and triumphs, and most importantly, of unbreakable bonds. As the world stands on the brink of chaos, follow the journey of the elemental wielders, the heroes of the prophecy, as they strive to restore balance, guided by their unity, their courage, their friendship, and their unbreakable bonds. This is their story, the story of the Elemental Prophecy.

Book excerpt: In a quaint coastal village, nestled between lush emerald hills that rolled gently towards the horizon and a shimmering blue sea that sparkled like a million scattered jewels, lived a spirited boy named Leo. With hair tousled and wild from the winds that swept through the village and skin kissed by the sun and salt from countless days spent at the water's edge, Leo embodied the very essence of his vibrant surroundings. Every morning, as the sun awoke from its slumber, casting warm, golden rays that danced over the waves, Leo would bound out of his small, weathered cottage. His heart raced with excitement as he approached the shoreline, a place of wonder and discovery. Here, the rhythmic lapping of the waves would greet him like an old friend, whispering secrets and tales of undiscovered worlds that lay beneath the surface. He often imagined what stories the sea might tell if only it could speak—ancient shipwrecks that held treasures of the past, mystical creatures swimming in the depths, and coral kingdoms waiting to be explored. With every splash of the waves against his feet, Leo felt a profound connection to the ocean, as if it were calling to him, beckoning him to embark on adventures that few dared to dream of. Sun-drenched afternoons were spent collecting seashells, racing against the tide, and watching the clouds drift lazily by, each one sparking his imagination. His youthful curiosity propelled him to ask questions about the sea, to learn about its tides, its creatures, and its ever-changing moods. Little did he know, however, that this insatiable curiosity and longing for exploration would lead him to an extraordinary destiny—one where he would be known as the Boy Who Caught the Oceans. Leo's passion for the sea would unfold into an enchanting journey, filled with mystical encounters, beautiful friendships, and challenges that would test the very limits of his bravery and resourcefulness. As he stood on the shore, arms outstretched to the horizon, he would soon discover that the ocean held not only the mysteries of the universe but also the key to his own heart. The adventures that lay ahead would change not only his life but the lives of those around him, as he learned to harness the magic of the waters that had always beckoned him home.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oceania is characterized by thousands of islands and archipelagoes amidst the vast expanse of the Pacific. Although it is one of the few truly oceanic habitats occupied permanently by humankind, surprisingly little research has been done on the maritime dimension of Pacific history. The People of the Sea attempts to fill this gap by combining neglected historical and scientific material to provide the first synthetic study of ocean-people interaction in the region from 1770 to 1870. It emphasizes Pacific Islanders' varied and evolving relationships with the sea during a crucial transitional era following sustained European contact. Countering the dominant paradigms of recent Pacific Islands' historiography, which tend to limit understanding of the sea's importance, this volume emphasizes the flux in the maritime environment and how it instilled an expectation and openness toward outside influences and the rapidity with which cultural change could occur in relations between various Islander groups. The author constructs an extended and detailed conceptual framework to examine the ways in which the sea has framed and shaped Islander societies. He looks closely at Islanders' diverse responses to their ocean environment, including the sea in daily life; sea travel and its infrastructure; maritime boundaries; protecting and contesting marine tenure; attitudes to unheralded seaborne arrivals; and conceptions of the world beyond the horizon and the willingness to voyage. He concludes by using this framework to reconsider the influence of the sea on historical processes in Oceania from 1770 to the present and discusses the implications of his findings for Pacific studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a century, the history of the novel has been written in terms of nations and territories: the English novel, the French novel, the American novel. But what if novels were viewed in terms of the seas that unite these different lands? Examining works across two centuries, The Novel and the Sea recounts the novel's rise, told from the perspective of the ship's deck and the allure of the oceans in the modern cultural imagination. Margaret Cohen moors the novel to overseas exploration and work at sea, framing its emergence as a transatlantic history, steeped in the adventures and risks of the maritime frontier. Cohen explores how Robinson Crusoe competed with the best-selling nautical literature of the time by dramatizing remarkable conditions, from the wonders of unknown lands to storms, shipwrecks, and pirates. She considers James Fenimore Cooper's refashioning of the adventure novel in postcolonial America, and a change in literary poetics toward new frontiers and to the maritime labor and technology of the nineteenth century. Cohen shows how Jules Verne reworked adventures at sea into science fiction; how Melville, Hugo, and Conrad navigated the foggy waters of language and thought; and how detective and spy fiction built on sea fiction's problem-solving devices. She also discusses the transformation of the ocean from a theater of skilled work to an environment of pristine nature and the sublime. A significant literary history, The Novel and the Sea challenges readers to rethink their land-locked assumptions about the novel.
