Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The photoluminescence, electrochemistry, and electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) of several families of compounds have been studied. ECL involves the generation of light from chemicals in solution using electricity. Osmium carbonyl chloride systems, metal-bisalicylideneethylenediamino (salen) systems, ruthenium complexes as well as ionic liquids listed were studied for their potential applications as ECL luminophores. Osmium carbonyl chloride complexes containing phenanthroline and/or phosphine ligands exhibit electrochemiluminescence in acetonitrile solutions. Although photoluminescence (PL) efficiencies are in general higher than a [Ru(bpy)3]2+ standard, the ECL emission efficiencies are weaker, showing the sensitive nature of transition metal excited states to the nature of both the ligands and solvent, indicating that tuning of the excited state and emission efficiencies are possible. Of the metal-salen complexes, PL efficiencies ranged between 0.0310 and 23.8 compared to standard, with ECL efficiencies overall lower than standard. Qualitative studies indicate the same excited species in formed in PL and ECL studies on the metal-salen compounds. The presence of ionic liquid [emim][EtSO4] appears to aid in the adsorption of luminophores and coreactant near the surface of the electrode (i.e., the preconcentration of reactants at or near the electrode surface), yielding 5 - 27-fold increases in ECL intensity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electrochemistry can be an elegant and essential support to synthetic inorganic chemistry. However, it is often perceived as a difficult technique. This book aims to introduce inorganic chemists to electrochemical investigations in as straightforward a way as possible. First, the reader is introduced to the theory of electron transfer processes, how they can be studied by various electrochemical techniques, and the practical procedures required. The book then goes on to look extensively, and with numerous illustrations, at the application of the techniques in the multiple fields of inorganic chemistry (including organometallics, coordination compounds, bioinorganics/biomimetics and materials science). Topics covered include: metallocenes; organometallic and coordination complexes; metal complexes of redox active ligands; metal-carbonyl clusters; superconductors; molecular wires; and proteins. Throughout, special attention is paid to the structural effects accompanying the electron transfer processes. This unique book bridges the gap between undergraduate and research-level electrochemistry books, and will be welcomed as an introduction to electrochemical applications within inorganic chemistry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the electronic properties of transition metals in coordination environments. These properties are responsible for the unique and intricate activity of transition metal sites in bio- and inorganic catalysis, but also pose challenges for both theoretical and experimental studies. Written by an international group of recognized experts, the book reviews recent advances in computational modeling and discusses their interplay using experiments. It covers a broad range of topics, including advanced computational methods for transition metal systems; spectroscopic, electrochemical and catalytic properties of transition metals in coordination environments; metalloenzymes and biomimetic compounds; and spin-related phenomena. As such, the book offers an invaluable resource for all researchers and postgraduate students interested in both fundamental and application-oriented research in the field of transition metal systems.

Book excerpt: This invaluable book distils the research accomplishments of Professor Fred Basolo during the five decades when he served as a world leader in the modern renaissance of inorganic chemistry. Its primary focus is on the very important area of chemistry known as coordination chemistry. Most of the elements in the periodic table are metals, and most of the chemistry of metals involves coordination chemistry. This is the case in the currently significant areas of research, including organometallic homogenous catalysis, biological reactions of metalloproteins, and even the solid state extended structures of new materials. In these systems, the metals are of primary importance because they are the sites of ligand substitution or redox reactions. In the solid materials, the coordination number of the metal and its stereochemistry are of major importance. Some fifty years of research on transition metal complexes carried out in the laboratory of Professor Basolo at Northwestern University is recorded here as selected scientific publications. The book is divided into three different major research areas, each dealing with some aspect of coordination chemistry. In each case, introductory remarks are presented which indicate what prompted the research projects and what the major accomplishments were. Although the research was of the academic, curiosity-driven type, some aspects have proven to be useful to others involved in projects that were much more applied in nature.

Book excerpt: The fundamental photophysical properties of iridium(III) materials make this class of materials the pre-eminent transition metal complex for use in optoelectronic applications. Iridium(III) in Optoelectronic and Photonics Applications represents the definitive account of photoactive iridium complexes and their use across a wide variety of applications. This two-volume set begins with an overview of the synthesis of these complexes and discusses their photophysical properties. The text highlights not only mononuclear complexes but also the properties of multinuclear and polymeric iridium-based materials and the assembly of iridium complexes into larger supramolecular architectures such as MOFs and soft materials. Chapters devoted to the use of these iridium-based materials in diverse optoelectronic applications follow, including: electroluminescent devices such as organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) and light-emitting electrochemical cells (LEECs); electrochemiluminescence (ECL); bioimaging; sensing; light harvesting in the context of solar cell applications; in photoredox catalysis and as components for solar fuels. Although primarily targeting a chemistry audience, the wide applicability of these compounds transcends traditional disciplines, making this text also of use to physicists, materials scientists or biologists who have interests in these areas.
