Book excerpt: The paper examines the behavior of stock returns in the Egyptian stock exchange, the efficiency of the market in pricing securities, and the relationship between returns and conditional volatility. GARCH(p,q)-M models estimated for the four best known daily indices indicate significant departures from the efficient market hypothesis; the tendency for returns to exhibit volatility clustering; and a significant positive link between risk and returns, which was significantly affected during the market downturn that followed the introduction of circuit breakers in the form of symmetric price limits on individual shares.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Egypt has undergone significant economic liberalization under the auspices of the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, USAID, and the European Commission. Yet after more than four decades of economic reform, the Egyptian economy still fails to meet popular expectations for inclusive growth, better standards of living, and high-quality employment. While many analysts point to cronyism and corruption, Amr Adly finds the root causes of this stagnation in the underlying social and political conditions of economic development. Cleft Capitalism offers a new explanation for why market-based development can fail to meet expectations: small businesses in Egypt are not growing into medium and larger businesses. The practical outcome of this missing middle syndrome is the continuous erosion of the economic and social privileges once enjoyed by the middle classes and unionized labor, without creating enough winners from market making. This in turn set the stage for alienation, discontent, and, finally, revolt. With this book, Adly uncovers both an institutional explanation for Egypt's failed market making, and sheds light on the key factors of arrested economic development across the Global South.

Economic adjustment programs that combine macroeconomic stability and structural reforms are being implemented in several Arab countries. Policy-makers also are devoting more attention to improving the operation of domestic capital markets. To invest in this region now would be a far-sighted move by entering at a stage when the process is still under way. This book is one of very few readily available sources of reference on the region's stock and bond markets, presented in a concise and accessible form. It provides investors, policy-makers, analysts, bankers and other market participants with comprehensive information covering the top 10 Arab stock markets of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, UAE, Bahrain, Oman, Lebanon, Morocco and Tunisia. For each market, a historical background is given together with structure, listing and trading procedures, performance trends, financial indicators, sectoral analysis and underlying strengths and weaknesses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An effective capital markets industry has existed in South Africa for over 120 years. As recently as 2015, South Africa was considered the best regulator of securities in the world. The fall out from the GFC contained lessons for all markets, but not to the same extent. In the pursuit of G20 inspired conformity, aspects of the South African reform agenda may therefore appear replicative of initiatives in other jurisdictions and, consequently, uncritical in parts. In light of the fall to forty sixth place in the world in securities regulation ranking and some uncertainty in respect of the extent and shape of the reform process, C. King Chanetsa reviews activities in South Africa along the busy securities and capital markets value chain, and considers the continuing and emerging regulatory and supervisory framework.

Book excerpt: This book contributes to empirical finance by comprehensively analysing an emerging stock market, employing modern econometric techniques. The most central and fascinating area of financial economics is probably the efficiency and volatility of the stock market – however, studies of emerging economies are relatively limited in this area. The rising importance of stock market globalisation has increased interest in emerging markets. This book leads the way for an emerging market perspective, as it explores the issue of efficiency and volatility of the stock market in Bangladesh by employing both univariate and multivariate models, using daily data of past share prices and monthly data of macroeconomic variables and the stock index, respectively. This book offers an understanding of the crucial issues facing developing economies, particularly emerging stock markets with similar characteristics to those of Bangladesh. This book undoubtedly provides valuable information for investors in the stock market, graduate, post-graduate, and PhD students in quantitative financial economics, academics in economics and finance, and policymakers in developing economies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Arab world’s second-largest economy, and its largest population, Egypt has endured more than three years of political and economic turbulence which have slowed its performance, but its long-term fundamentals remain strong. Egypt has been through a turbulent time, but still manages to churn out headline growth higher than the Eurozone. Still, an economy that was growing at a rate of 7% has given way to a more modest GDP expansion of 2.2% in the 2011/12 fiscal year, following the ousting of Mubarak, while foreign direct investment fell by two-thirds over the same period. The figures are likely to remain subdued in the near term but there have been some improvements in cyclical performance, particularly with the country’s capital markets, as 2012 saw Egypt’s exchange grow by 51% year-on-year. More importantly, the country still benefits from significant competitive advantages, including a strong trade profile, a large private sector, a sizable manufacturing base and favourable demographics.

Book excerpt: First published in 1988, Stock Markets of the Arab World provides a sound description and analysis of the stock market situation in Arab countries and an evaluation of previous attempts at the integration of capital markets. Foreign interest in the oil producing Arab countries has grown due to the accumulation of international reserves. Oil producers are looking for an alternative to their near-term investments in United States Securities through a diversification of their economies. This book argues that these countries could profitably invest these reserves through an integration of their securities markets. It also says that prospects of increased linkages among Arab domestic markets do exist. This is an interesting read for scholars and researchers of Middle East studies, Arab economy and economics in general.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thriving capital market, one that not only brings investment funds into a country but also distributes profits in a transparent manner, is essential for any economy, especially a rapidly developing one such as Saudi Arabia. Already a key player on the world stage, the Kingdom is going through a major planned economic transformation and diversification. In particular, a robust and transparent capital market, with a high level of integrity and sound enforcement, is well on the way to fruition. This book is the first in English to analyse and evaluate the roles of economic planning and a capital market in Saudi Arabia’s economic modernization. In the process of examining the level of transparency and fairness in Saudi Arabia’s capital market, the author provides detailed information and analysis of such issues and topics as the following: – market disclosure rules; – insider trading laws; – gaps in enforcement; – dispute resolution; – role of securities agencies; – Saudi Arabia’s position in international organizations; and – repercussions of the 2006 Saudi stock market collapse. The author draws on a wide range of sources in both English and Arabic, and concludes with well-grounded proposals for appropriate judicial, administrative, and enforcement policies. Investors, their management and attorneys, and other advisors with an eye on trade development in the Middle East will derive great benefit from the current and detailed information in this book. Lawyers and policymakers will discover all they need to know about the Saudi capital market, its developing trends, and applicable laws.
