Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘How do children see the world?’ is a question of immense importance which fascinates not only psychologists but also parents and all those concerned with education. In this English translation, first published in 1976, the author, who was Professor of Psychology at the René Descartes University in Paris, provided the most comprehensive review at the time of the development of visual perception in children, a field to which she herself had made a substantial contribution. Her book, which gave the first comprehensive study of the relationship between cognitive development and perceptual activities in small children, explores how they interpret visual information and gradually build up a picture of the world. The author had devoted fifteen years to research on the visual world of the child and possessed an exhaustive knowledge of the experimental literature on the subject in English, French, Russian and other languages. She saw perception as a form of knowledge which the child exploits and adapts in a variety of ways at different stages of development. This is brilliantly demonstrated in her own research on the strategies children use in judging things as ‘different’ or ‘the same’ and the way these relate to the structure of their perceptual organisation. This book is essential reading for anyone with a serious interest in developmental and cognitive psychology; it also provides an object lesson in the application of experimental methods. In addition the organisation of the material made it a valuable textbook for advanced undergraduate and post-graduate teaching and will still be of interest in its historical context today.

Download or read book Infants at Risk written by Richard B. Kearsley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-09-30 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What methodologies within the behavioral sciences have clinical application for the diagnosis and management of high risk and handicapped infants? Originally published in 1979, this volume not only deals with this issue, but illustrates the contributions that behavioral science may have offered those called upon to evaluate the cognitive consequences of perinatal high risk factors at the time. The inadequacies of some measures used to assess intellectual competence in retardates are juxtaposed with the sophisticated methodologies that may be employed to document early mental abilities. Also included are assessment procedures that bypass reliance on neuromotor performance, imitation, or language production. The authors draw attention to the discontinuous nature of cognitive development, to the possibility that mental and motor development may proceed independently, and to the plasticity of the developing CNS, which may overcome early deficits if underlying competences are recognized and exposed to appropriate stimulation. Here is a volume that does not simply catalog the nature of the child’s accomplishments and deficits, but emphasizes the need to examine his potential for learning, and offers various methodologies that may be of value in documenting the child’s continuing cognitive development. This book is a re-issue originally published in 1979. The language used is a reflection of its era and no offence is meant by the Publishers to any reader by this re-publication.

Book Synopsis Early Formal Education by : Robert Hess
Download or read book Early Formal Education written by Robert Hess and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The future of any society lies in its ability to train and socialize its young. The stability of its institutions, political systems, the productivity of its industrial resources, and the creativity of its intellectual talent reflect the success of those who have been given responsibility for shaping and developing its youth. If these teaching functions are not adequately performed, through failure of the agents, as a result of new demands created by new values, social, economic, or political change, pressures may emerge for the modification of socializing procedures, or for a change in the agents allocated responsibility for socialization. Some major questions answered in this book include: At what age should formal education begin? What effect does the timing of education have on a child's later social and educational development? Do pre-school years deserve the fiscal resources and professional talent now being allocated to them? Can socially and economically disadvantaged children be successfully educated without involving families and community? What is the role of technology in the early education process? This volume brings together the work of active and articulate spokespersons in the field of early education during the 1960s. It makes explicit the concepts, theories, and empirical data upon which the field as a whole is proceeding. These contributions from leading psychologists, child development researchers, and educators cover an unusually broad range of issues. Providing a reference on theories and existing programs in the field of early learning and offering many suggestions for the course and content of today's programs, this volume is important reading in child development and the psychology and sociology of education.
