Book excerpt: This mixed-method study examined the effects of the use of the Vocabulary Think Chart in seventh-grade science students' understanding of scientific vocabulary. Participants included 89 students who attended the only three regular Earth Science classes in the study site. Participants were assigned to the treatment and comparison group according to the teachers' wish on how they wanted to participate in the study. The experimental group received one week long preparation on the use of the Vocabulary Think Chart, followed by five weeks of using the strategy independently. Results of the study did not show a significant change on students' scientific vocabulary understanding and raised questions about vocabulary instruction in science classes. Discussion of the results revolves around the Treatment Teacher's influence in the study, time of intervention, and number of participants.

Download or read book The Effects of Teaching Math Vocabulary on Math Knowledge of Seventh Grade Students written by Rich Haisman and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine if the direct and indirect teaching of math vocabulary would aid students in raising their math scores and confidence. The study was conducted over an eight week period of time during the first trimester of the 2011-2012 school year. One entire class of seventh grade students received the treatment, however only six students' data was used to provide data for this paper. The subjects selected to participate in the study consisted of three girls. Every day the subjects in my class were asked to learn vocabulary. Some days they were given time to study note cards that they had prepared. Other days we played games using our vocabulary words. Sometimes I taught them vocabulary directly. However other days the subjects were asked to solve carefully selected problems of the day. Each of the problems utilized different vocabulary terms that they must know in order to solve the problem. The results of the study indicate that students that have a deeper understanding of basic math vocabulary words and symbols score higher on exams and quizzes. Further research is needed to determine if the conclusions found in this paper are applicable for an entire grade.

Download or read book How Does the Implementation of Differentiated Vocabulary Instruction Influence the Success of 7th Grade Students in a Middle School Science Classroom? written by Jennifer Christine Hood and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learning academic vocabulary can be just as difficult as learning a new language. In order to help students build a strong foundation for science content and literacy in a classroom with mixed abilities and languages, this action research focused on differentiated vocabulary strategies. Students were divided into three groups based on proficiency level in the classroom and English Language Learner status. Four vocabulary strategies were implemented repeatedly during a four-week unit on Evolution. Strategies varied in level of cooperative grouping and modality. Although no increase in average test scores were measured, the strategies utilized did increase student understanding of content vocabulary. It was found that each student group responded differently to each vocabulary strategy. Overall, the majority of students expressed preference for fewer words and concepts, more study time and repetition, addition of illustrations and other visuals, and work in small cooperative groups.
