Book excerpt: Drawing on Social Exchange Theory, a study was conducted examining the effects of perceived coworker and supervisor social support on employee work-life balance, job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and organizational citizenship behaviors. It was predicted that perceived coworker and supervisor support would be positively related to perceptions of worklife balance, job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and organizational citizenship behaviors. One hundred and thirty-two participants completed a survey posted online on LinkedIn.com and the University of Wisconsin-Stout's Psychology department participant pool. Results showed that employee perceptions of work-life support (both supervisor and coworker support) are related to work-life balance, job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and organizational citizenship behaviors. It was also found that supervisor support predicted certain employee outcomes more so than coworker support.

Book excerpt: The study of occupational stress and its effect on health has been the subject of increasing research and public awareness in the last twenty years. Research has identified a number of significant factors related to a variety of outcomes, but much of the variation in individual responses has not yet been explained. This study expands the understanding of the role of supervisory characteristics and daily occupational hassles with job satisfaction. The Abitibi-Price Supervision and Stress (APSS) research included 187 employees from 7 branch locations and 3 job types in a cross-sectional study of the relationships between supervisory style, occupational hassles, previously studied chronic occupational stressors (job demand, decision latitude, role conflict, role ambiguity) and job satisfaction. Measures of individual differences and objective organizational and job characteristics were included in the analysis. Individual differences in affect intensity and job experience were related to the appraisal of occupational hassles as threatening. In addition, the APSS research found a close link between organizational financial performance and the stress process. The APSS study provided significant evidence of a relationship between supervisory style and perceived chronic stressors and job satisfaction. Some evidence was found for a relationship between objective measures of supervisory style and the perceived stressors, but the stronger relationship indicated for perceived measures of style supports a role for cognitive perception and appraisal in the stress process. Increased supervisory delegation was related to decreased chronic stressors and increased job satisfaction. Increased supervisory direction corresponded to increases in the job demand stressors, but was not related to the level of role stressors. Direction was highly related to job satisfaction, with the highest job satisfaction apparent in the middle of the direction range. The measure of supervisor-employee relationship was strongly related to all stressors and satisfaction, with decreased stressors and increased satisfaction related to increased quality of relationship. Measures of perceived supervisory style explained more of the variation in job satisfaction than did the previously studied chronic stressors. The role of daily occupational hassles in the stress process was supported, with an identified relationship to job satisfaction, but not to the other chronic stressors.

Book excerpt: Fit is generally conceptualized as a dynamic construct, but most research on person-environment fit has focused on fit in the current moment. We addressed this oversight by examining the dynamic relationships among person-job (PJ) fit, demand-ability (DA) fit, need-supply (NS) fit, and employee work attitudes over time using a three-wave survey design over a 12-month period. Results from 168 employees revealed that change in PJ fit was significantly related to changes in job satisfaction and affective organizational commitment. In addition, DA and NS fit changes were significantly and indirectly associated with job satisfaction and commitment changes through PJ fit change. We also found that increases in job demands and employee abilities significantly decreased DA fit, and increases in employee needs significantly decreased NS fit whereas increases in job supplies significantly increased NS fit. Finally, we examined age as an important moderator for employees' reactions to PJ fit changes, and found that younger employees reacted more strongly to increases/decreases in PJ fit than did older employees.

It proposes a new PSC theory concerning the corporate climate for workers’ psychological health, its origins and implications for work stress, and provides a critique of current research and theories. It provides a comprehensive review of all PSC studies to date. The chapters discuss state-of-the-art empirical evidence testing PSC theory in relation to management roles, organisational resilience, corruption, organisational status, cultural perspectives, illegitimate tasks, high PSC work groups, PSC variability in work groups, etc. They investigate outcomes such as psychological distress, emotional exhaustion, depression, worry, engagement, health, cognitive decline, personal initiative, boredom, cynicism, sickness absence, and productivity loss, in various workplace settings across many countries. This unique book allows practitioners to rapidly update practical measures, benchmarks and processes, and provides students and trainees with an introduction to PSC and important concepts and methods, quantitative and qualitative, in occupational health with leads to further sources. Students as well as experts on occupational health and safety, human resource management, occupational health psychology, organisational psychology and practitioners, unions and policy makers will find this book highly informative. It covers relevant materials for undergraduate and postgraduate education, drawing upon the concepts, topics and methods (diary, multilevel, longitudinal, qualitative, data linkage) within the multidisciplinary occupational health area.

Book excerpt: The present study explored the multilevel effects of supervisor learning adaptability on training effectiveness, and post-training employee job satisfaction in a work-family and safety-based intervention aimed at increasing family supportive supervisor behaviors (FSSB) and safety behaviors. Using a sample of 291 municipal public works field workers from two independent organizations, it was hypothesized that supervisor adaptability positively relates to post-training FSSB and employee job satisfaction. Specifically, it was hypothesized that learning adaptability prepares those supervisors to be more inclined to engage actively in training, thereby increasing employee reported FSSBs more significantly for those supervisors and leading to intervention target results, namely employee job satisfaction. Results did not support the hypothesized relationships. However, bivariate correlations between learning adaptability and FSSBs and job satisfaction are significant and positive, indicating that with a larger sample, learning adaptability may moderate training effectiveness. Theoretical rationale, methods, and scientific contributions are discussed.
