Book excerpt: The overall objectives of this research program were to determine the source of brittleness in Al-Li alloys, determine ductility enhancement through slip homogenization effected by grain refinement and incoherent dispersoids, compare the properties of Al-Li alloys prepared from different types of rapidly solidified powders with the properties of cast Al-Li alloys and other commercial high-strength Al alloys, and identify and recommend for further development promising Al-Li alloy compositions for use in aircraft structures. The approach followed was that of rapid solidification and powder-processing, which result in significant microstructural refinement and make possible the processing of novel Al-Li alloy compositions not amenable to ingot-casting methods.

Book excerpt: The quantitative effects of stepwise additions of the precipitation-strengthening element copper, the solid-solution-strengthening element magnesium, and the substructure-refining element zirconium on the microstructures and peak-aged mechanical properties of rapid solidification processed (RSP) Al-3Li alloys have been determined. Additions of 0.2 to 0.5% zirconium by weight produce a 1.4 to 1.9-?m diameter, fully recovered subgrain structure in Al-3Li-Zr extrusions and raise the peak-aged yield stress of Al-3Li by 100 to 140 MPa. The addition of 1% magnesium raises the yield stress of Al-3Li-0.2Zr by 35 MPa, but a further addition to 2% has no effect. Additions of 1 to 2% copper to Al-3Li-0.2Zr raise the yield stress by 45 MPa per weight percent copper and render the peak-aged mechanical properties of the alloy sensitive to variations in solutiontreatment temperature and process stretch. Improvements in the properties of RSP Al-3Li-Cu-Zr alloys, in comparison with those measured by previous investigators, are related to improvements in consolidation processing and, in particular, to effective disintegration of oxide layers on the RSP particulates. Al-3Li-1Mg-0.2Zr and Al-3Li-2Cu-0.2Zr are promising substitutes for commercial 2XXX and 7XXX aluminum alloys, respectively, at 10 to 11% lower density levels.

Book excerpt: The superplastic forming characteristics of rapid-solidification-processed (RSP) Al-3Li-based alloys containing varying amounts of copper, magnesium, cobalt, and zirconium and processed by different thermomechanical sequences were investigated. Their final microstructures were strongly dependent on the processing treatment and alloy composition. All the zirconium-containing alloys were processed to have a fine subgrain microstructure. These alloys deform predominantly by dislocation glide and climb processes and by subgrain boundary motion, and they exhibit up to 400% elongation, which is sufficient for many commercial forming applications. Cavitation was suppressed, and the mechanical properties were not affected by forming. A thermomechanical processing sequence was established that develops a completely recrystallized fine grain microstructure in the Al-Li-Cu-Zr alloys. The alloys with this recrystallized microstructure have excellent formability.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This chapter reviews the precipitation and precipitate phases that occur during heat treatments in multi-component Al-Li based alloys. It describes aspects related to nucleation, growth, morphology and orientation relationships of the strengthening precipitates δ’ and T1, the toughening precipitate S’ and the recrystallisation-inhibiting precipitate β’. Equilibrium precipitate phases such as T2, which are deleterious to the mechanical and corrosion properties of the alloys, are also described. It is shown that careful alloy chemistry control, two-step homogenization and controlled stretching prior to ageing can be employed to improve the volume fraction and distribution of the precipitate phases. All these processing aspects are necessary to achieve optimum combinations of properties for the alloys.

Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, SIld disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna and broader dissemination. tional publishing house to assure improved service Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 30 (thesis year 1985) a total of 12,400 theses titles from 26 Canadian and 186 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work.

Book excerpt: The advantages to be gained by weight reduction of aerospace structures have encouraged the aluminum industry to develop a family of aluminum alloys which contain lithium as one of the alloying elements. When alloyed with aluminum, lithium can reduce the density by approximately three percent and increase the elastic modulus by six percent for every weight percent added. A new series of aluminum alloys, typified by 2090, 2091, 8090, and 8091, have been developed and are currently being produced in commercial quantities. These alloys have densities between 7% and 10% lower than the conventional alloy 7075 with correspondingly higher stiffness. Although a combined set of specific properties of the (Aluminum-Lithium-X) alloys often exceeds those of the conventional aluminum materials used in aerospace, these properties seem to be much more sensitive to processing parameters. The strong processing-property relationship is associated with sharp crystallographic textures that are developed during primary processing and very complex precipitate microstructures whose distributions are sensitive to quench rates and degree of deformation prior to aging. This paper describes the processing-microstructure-property relationships of the new Al-Li-X alloys and focuses on strength, ductility, fracture toughness, fatigue and stress corrosion properties. Keywords: Symposia, Metallurgy, Microstructure, Alloys, Mechanical properties. (JG).

Book excerpt: Offering one of the field's most thorough treatments of material design principles, including a concise overview of fastener design, the Handbook of Mechanical Alloy Design provides an extensive overview of the effects of alloy compositional design on expected mechanical properties. This reference highlights the design elements that must be considered in risk-based metallurgical design and covers alloy design for a broad range of materials, including the increasingly important powder metal and metal matrix alloys. It discusses the design issues associated with carbon, alloy, and tool steels, microalloyed steels, and more. The Handbook of Mechanical Alloy Design is a must-have reference.

This book was released on 2005 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aluminum-lithium alloys have been under development for lightweight - high strength aerospace structures but implementation has been slowed significantly because of poor short transverse fracture toughness and brittle intergranular delamination cracking. The alloy AF/C458 (now designated AA 2099) has been designed to exhibit decreased mechanical anisotropy and improved fracture toughness while maintaining ductility and strength levels. This thesis examines the application of Friction Stir Processing (FSP) of AF/C458 as an approach to refine and homogenize the grain structure and enhance mechanical properties. FSP of peak-aged material results in refined, equiaxed grains but with reduced hardness due to the heat input of the process. The effect of post-FSP heat treatment has been established and the influence of FSP on tensile and fatigue properties has been determined.
