It also examines how individual differences in feedback propensities affect feedback seeking. Proposed antecedents of feedback eliciting (overt feedback seeking) were examined utilizing a computer-based technique that permitted objective measurement of the behavior. A 2 X 2 research design was used, with two levels of social presence (an observer present or absent) and two different task rationales (evaluating the task, evaluating the participant). Feedback eliciting was operationalized in two complementary ways-as the number of times the participant elicited feedback, and as the number of seconds he or she spent examining feedback information. Two types of feedback were examined: (1) outcome feedback, or information about level of performance, and (2) process feedback, or information about how to improve performance. Separate hypotheses were formulated for each. In addition, to social presence and task rationale, the following variables were hypothesized to affect feedback eliciting: performance, arousal (measured as state anxiety), external feedback propensity, task-specific internal feedback ability, task familiarity, internal feedback propensity, self-esteem, locus of control, tolerance for ambiguity, and need for achievement.

Book excerpt: Past research using different learning tasks has consistently shown different performance strategy patterns for field independent and dependent individuals. This research has shown that different computer environments affect how well individuals learn and that learning is dependent upon an individual's cognitive style (Morrison & Noble, 1987; MacGregor, Shapiro, & Niemiec; 1988). Other research has shown that there are individual differences (in cognitive ability, perceptual speed, and performance on a noun-pair task) in learning and executing computer tasks, specifically with regard to the type of interaction individuals choose to use (Schmidt-Nielsen & Ackerman, 1993). The present study is an attempt to correlate field dependence with performance strategies when using a specific task, the SigmaPlot graphing task. Field dependency, as measured by scores on the Group Embedded Figures Test (GEFT) (Witkin, 1971), was correlated with the mean time to complete a graph. Contrary to previous findings, field dependency was not correlated with performance. However, it was found that years of computer experience, perceptual speed, and cognitive reasoning ability were.

Book excerpt: This study examined whether graphic displays of individual performance and graphic displays of the individual performance of each group member would increase performance when individuals were paid monetary incentives. All participants were paid piece-rate pay and there were three conditions: (a) no feedback, (b) graphic display of individual performance, and (c) graphic display of the performance of each group member. Participants were 80 undergraduate students who performed a computerized data entry task. The main dependent variable was the number of correctly completed entries. A monotone ANCOVA was used to detect performance differences, using data from the first session as a covariate to control for keyboard proficiency. As hypothesized, the group that received graphic displays of the performance of each group member performed the highest, followed by the group that received graphic displays of individual performance, and then by the group that did not receive feedback. The results indicate that both types of graphic feedback can enhance incented performance, in contrast to the results of studies that have examined other types of feedback (e.g., Johnson, Dickinson, & Huitema, 2008). The findings also extend VanStelle (2012), who found that those who received graphic displays of the performance of each group member performed significantly better than those who received graphic displays of only their own performance when they were paid hourly.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: This study investigates whether the social facilitation effect takes place when a person performs a computerized task that includes an animated intelligent agent (IA). The moderating effects of two individual differences, locus of control (LOC) and microcomputer playfulness (MCP), are tested for. It was proposed that an IA's presence would cause participants to exhibit this effect and that LOC and MCP would moderate a participant's arousal, measured as state anxiety, such that those possessing an internal LOC and those exhibiting high MCP would experience less arousal when performing computerized tasks with an IA present. Data was analyzed using a 2 (task difficulty) x 4 (intelligent agent) repeated measures MANCOVA. Most hypotheses are not supported, however MCP does appear to moderate arousal depending on the behavior of the IA.

Book excerpt: This book brings together leading scholars from around the world to provide their most influential thinking on instructional feedback. The chapters range from academic, in-depth reviews of the research on instructional feedback to a case study on how feedback altered the life-course of one author. Furthermore, it features critical subject areas - including mathematics, science, music, and even animal training - and focuses on working at various developmental levels of learners. The affective, non-cognitive aspects of feedback are also targeted; such as how learners react emotionally to receiving feedback. The exploration of the theoretical underpinnings of how feedback changes the course of instruction leads to practical advice on how to give such feedback effectively in a variety of diverse contexts. Anyone interested in researching instructional feedback, or providing it in their class or course, will discover why, when, and where instructional feedback is effective and how best to provide it.
