University students undergo many different types of stressors at one time such as financial instability, identity development, academic pressures, parental expectations, and racial/cultural differences (Kadison & Geronimo, 2004). Intense stress when it is not coped with effectively can lead to many different health problems physically and mentally. The current study evaluates the effects of mindfulness meditation with undergraduate students and it was expected that practicing mindfulness meditation would 1) reduce perceptions of stress, 2) increase perceptions of mindfulness, and 3) increase rates of acceptability in relation to mindfulness and meditation. It was also expected that an increase in compliance and acceptance would occur after experiencing the intervention. Thirty-one undergraduate students participated in an intervention, a 7-day phase of completing a survey on their meditation practice, and a 30- day follow up survey. There was no statistical significance between the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS) at 30-day follow up from preintervention scores. Mindfulness has shown to have positive benefits on both physical and mental health. College students are exposed to stressors on a daily basis, and often utilize unhealthy or unproductive coping strategies. Little is known about the effectiveness of a brief, in-class mindfulness training program for college students. This study incorporated several mindfulness techniques into a training series designed for undergraduate college students. Changes in the Perceived Stress Scale and Mindful Attention Awareness Scale were analyzed and compared between a control group and training group. Based on prior research, it was hypothesized that four brief mindfulness sessions would reduce self-reported stress and increase mindful qualities in participants. Also, it was hypothesized that larger doses of mindfulness, which included both in-class training and out-of-class practice, would produce lower perceived stress levels and higher mindful qualities. No significant differences were found between the training and control groups for either measure, however the training group itself saw significant decreases in perceived stress post-training, and significant increases in both amount of mindfulness practice and familiarity of mindfulness. In future research, distinct control groups and more participants are needed to assess for training effects.

Book excerpt: The purpose of study was to research the buffering effect of mindfulness between the stressors and perceived stress in faith-based university students. Literature suggests that as mindfulness increases, stress decreases. This study attempts to provide information on college students’ perceived stress levels, stressors they face, and mindfulness awareness. A multiple linear regression was conducted to examine the association between perceived stress, stressors, and mindfulness levels. A sample of 91 students in the Spring of 2018 at a faith-based university in Texas were asked to participate in an online survey. Some findings were not congruent with the literature. The results of this study found that the significant factors of perceived stress were: overwhelming responsibilities, class attendance, being female, sleep, and course load. The top stressors of students were course load and responsibility. It also showed how female students showed to be more stressed and overall students at this private university showed to be more stressed then in other studies. Though mindfulness did not buffer the effect of stressors and perceived stress, the results of this study informed the university and counseling center of the stressors of college students on campus, mindfulness levels, and perceived stress levels. Prevention is key to student success, and college counseling centers can provide prevention for students by offering one-on-one counseling, group counseling, workshops, and skills training for students.
