Book excerpt: Using data from the 2001 Cambodia Child Labor Survey, this study considers the effects of household migration on the school attendance and child work outcomes of Cambodian children ages 6 to 17. Previous studies of the impact of migration on education and child work participation in developing nations have produced mixed results and have not focused on the effects of the migration of entire households. By conducting multivariate regression analysis using an instrumental variable defined as the distance between a rural district and the closest urban district, this paper shows that, when migration is instrumented for, it has a positive relationship with school attendance. In addition, children who migrated with their household worked fewer hours than those who did not migrate. At the same time, work status, defined as whether or not the child was involved in work-related activity was not significantly correlated with migration. Understanding the effects of migration on education and child work is especially important for Cambodia, a post-conflict nation with a weak education system and high levels of internal migration and child work that faces major economic development challenges.

Book Synopsis Global education monitoring report 2019 by : UNESCO
Download or read book Global education monitoring report 2019 written by UNESCO and published by UNESCO Publishing. This book was released on 2019-06-28 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2019 Gender Report is based on a monitoring framework first introduced in the 2016 Global Education Monitoring Report. In addition to focusing on gender parity in education participation, attainment and learning achievement, the framework examines broad social and economic contexts (gender norms and institutions) and key education system characteristics (laws and policies, teaching and learning practices, learning environments, and resources). The framework also looks at the relationship between education and selected social and economic outcomes. For instance, a move towards parity in education attainment may increase women's labour force participation rates, but low levels of labour force participation feed into existing norms and may constrain expansion of education opportunities for women. Book Synopsis Can Migration Reduce Educational Attainment? by : David J. McKenzie
Download or read book Can Migration Reduce Educational Attainment? written by David J. McKenzie and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2006 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors examine the impact of migration on educational attainment in rural Mexico. Using historical migration rates by state to instrument for current migration, they find evidence of a significant negative effect of migration on schooling attendance and attainment of 12 to 18 year-old boys and 16 to 18 year-old girls. IV-Censored Ordered Probit results show that living in a migrant household lowers the chances of boys completing junior high school and of boys and girls completing high school. The negative effect of migration on schooling is somewhat mitigated for younger girls with low educated mothers, which is consistent with remittances relaxing credit constraints on education investment for the very poor. However, for the majority of rural Mexican children, family migration depresses educational attainment. Comparison of the marginal effects of migration on school attendance and on participation in other activities shows that the observed decrease in schooling of 16 to 18 year-olds is accounted for by the current migration of boys and increased housework for girls.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Migration in Eastern Europe and Central Asia is relatively large by international standards, driven both by political factors (the 1990 collapse of the Soviet system, ensuing emergence of conflicts and new states, and opening of borders with Europe) and economic factors (abrupt economic deterioration and corresponding search for better employment and living conditions). The report anlayzes the different kinds of migration as well as the policies on both sides of the equation to limit negative side effects (like emargination, criminal activities, and brain drain) and maximize positive ones (increased labor pool for services, remittances, return migration with improved human and financial capital).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most parents care deeply about their children. If that were enough, we would not see the inequalities we currently do in children’s opportunities and healthy development—children out of school, children laboring, children living in poverty. While the scale of the problems can seem overwhelming, history has shown that massive progress is possible on problems that once seemed unsolvable. Within the span of less than twenty-five years, the proportion of people living in extreme poverty has been cut in half, the number of children under age five that die each day has dropped by over 12,000, and the percentage of girls attending school has climbed from just three in four to over 90 percent. National action, laws, and public policies fundamentally shape children’s opportunities. Children’s Chances urges a transformational shift from focusing solely on survival to targeting children’s full and healthy development. Drawing on never-before-available comparative data on laws and public policies in 190 countries, Jody Heymann and Kristen McNeill tell the story of what works and what countries around the world are doing to ensure equal opportunities for all children. Covering poverty, discrimination, education, health, child labor, child marriage, and parental care, Children’s Chances identifies the leaders and the laggards, highlights successes and setbacks, and provides a guide for what needs to be done to make equal chances for all children a reality.
