Book excerpt: Experiments investigated the effects of metallized fuel composition on the combustion characteristics of solid fuel ramjets (SFRJ). Metallized fuels were burned in a two dimensional SFRJ motor under conditions similar to actual flight conditions proposed for solid fuel ramjets. Pressure, air inlet temperature and flowrate measurements were taken using an automatic data acquisition system. High speed motion pictures were taken of the interior or the combustor during the burning of the solid fuel through two viewing windows located in the recirculation zone and just prior to the aft mixing chamber where the boundary layer was more fully developed. Tests were conducted at mass fluxes of 0.2 and 0.5 lbm sq in. sec, with pressures ranging from 57 to 200 psia and with a nominal inlet air temperature of 1100 R. Most fuel surfaces had a characteristic shedding of small, unignited flakes. The flakes are thought to be binder material, and were more prevalent at lower pressures. Occasional shedding of large surface layers was observed, especially during motor shutdown. Metallic surface agglomerations appeared to interact strongly with these irregular surface layers. Large magnesium particles exhibited the expected bright ignition characteristics. Boron particles were not observed, apparently because they were smaller than the resolution limits of the motion pictures. (Theses).

The particle size distributions at the aft end of the fuel grain were generally quadra-modal, with mode peaks at 2, 4,15, and 25 - 45 microns. At the nozzle entrance the distributions were tri-modal, due to the complete oxidation of the 2 micron particles. Sauter mean diameter and the size of the largest agglomerates increased with increasing equivalence ratio (or grain length), indicating that the longer grains result in more surface agglomeration. Combustion efficiency increased with equivalence ratio. A direct correlation of particle size alone with combustion efficiency was not obvious and may require an accurate measurement of particle concentration. Keywords: Integral rocket ramjet engines; Rocket propellant grains; Solid fuel ramjet engines; Combustion; Laser particle measurement; Metallized rocket fuels. Theses. (edc).

Book excerpt: An experimental investigation was conducted to determine the relationship between the cold flow characteristics of velocity, pressure distribution, and turbulence intensity and the reacting flow performance and combustion characteristics of a solid fuel ramjet. The effects of configuration and air flow changes on the above characteristics were examined. Average regression rates and combustion efficiencies were not significantly affected by changes in configuration. These variations in test conditions significantly affected the centerline turbulence intensity but not the near-wall turbulence intensity in cold flow. Near-wall turbulence profiles in cold flow were found to correlate with the fuel regression profiles in reacting flows. The use of bypass resulted in decreases in regression rate and efficiencies for all cases. (Author).

These variations in test conditions significantly affected the center-line turbulence intensity but not the near-wall turbulence intensity in cold flow. The use of bypass resulted in decreases in regression rate and efficiencies for all cases. Attainable performance appears to be most strongly related to near-wall turbulence intensity/mixing and to the amount of fuel reaching the aft mixing chamber. (Author).

Fuel properties were found to have some effect on the obtainable combustion efficiency but much larger effects could be induced by the flow conditions (induced mixing near the fuel surface, bypass air, etc.). Book excerpt: An experimental investigation was conducted of highly metallized (approximately 70% by weight) solid fuels burned in a two-dimensional solid fuel ramjet (SFRJ). High speed motion pictures were taken of the combustion process through viewing windows located at two locations along the fuel slab length. Films revealed various ejection events ranging from small particle ejections to large flakes of burning an non-burning material leaving the surface. Nine different fuels were tested at air mass fluxes fo 0.2 and 0.5 pounds mass per inch squared per second and pressures ranging from 35 to 200 psia. There was evidence that both minor binder ingredient changes (polymer and curative) and the inclusion of magnesium resulted in larger required inlet step heights to sustain combustion. Most of the metallized fuels did not burn well at pressures below approximately 40 psia. Low air mass fluxes generally resulted in larger metallic surface agglomerations, larger particles in the gas phase and more dominant shedding of surface layers.

Book excerpt: A T63 combustor was instrumented to allow measurement ofcenterline distributions of temperature and soot size and concentration using water-cooled probes. Three-wavelength light transmission measurements were also made at two locations to determine the mean soot size and NOx concentrations were measured in the exhaust duct. Five fuels of varying composition were used in the combustor and initial tests were conducted using two smoke-suppressant fuel additives. The data indicated that the aft region of the combustor contained a large, low temperature recirculation zone, surrounded by an annular region of higher temperature and lower soot concentration. Light transmissionn measurements appeared to yield reasonable particle size data when compared to collected samples. However, the extent of agglomeration in the collection probes was unknown. Smoke-suppressant fuel additives were found to have reduced effectiveness in the present test series, apparently due to unheated inlet air which was employed. NOX levels increased significantly with increasing combustor exhaust temperature (or fuel-air ratio). Soot concentration increased and transmittance decreased with increasing fuel-air ratio. The mean soot particle size was found to be between 0.21 and 0.26 micronns, independent of fuel composition and fuel-air ratio.
