This study aims to find out how can metacognitive strategies and bilingual education help students in their English reading comprehension and reading attitudes. The first research question is (a) What are the effects of using metacognitive strategies in bilingual education that help EFL learners to enhance their English reading comprehension? And (b) What is the attitude toward reading of students after bilingual and metacognitive strategies reading course? Is it positive or negative? This research included 10 participants, 5 in the experimental group, and 5 in the control group. The participants were all from the same school, and they were all high-graded students, yet, they were all low-achievement students. This research used mixed-method research. And the instrument included elementary reading attitude survey, a reading comprehension test, and an in-depth interview. The result of this research was positive, which is to say that metacognitive strategies and bilingual education can improve students' English reading comprehension and can also change their English reading attitudes. The two brief metacognitive sessions on thinking about reading as problem solving appeared to have an impact on students' tutoring; +RPS tutors used significantly more decoding strategies while tutoring than their -RPS counterparts. However, +RPS tutors did not, generally, maintain the greater strategy use when resolving problems to their own reading. One global reading strategy significantly differentiated the three conditions, and all tutors performed marginally better than nontutors on a measure of reading comprehension. Overall, attitude towards reading scores decreased significantly over time and across conditions. However, tutoring may have a protective effect on students' attitude; both tutor conditions maintained significantly better attitudes than did nontutors.

It literally closed down schools for more than a year, and paved the way for remote learning. Due to this educational setup, many students worldwide suffered, and continue to suffer, from learning loss. This book presents a teaching method - metacognitive strategies - that can help learners improve their comprehension, and help address this learning loss. The author discusses the theoretical underpinning of metacognitive strategy use and its effects on metacognitive awareness, self-efficacy, reading performance, and motivation, as well as providing practical guidance on how to use metacognitive strategies in designing engaging learning activities that promote collaboration among learners. The book will provide a valuable source of information for education students and teachers across many levels, and a useful and practical reference for college students and graduate students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides the first comprehensive, research-based examination of metacognition in literacy learning. Bringing together research findings from reading, linguistics, psychology, and education, it is logically organized as follows: Part I provides the theoretical foundation that supports the teaching of metacognition; Parts II and III provide new methods for metacognitive assessment and instruction in literacy contexts at all grade levels; and Part IV provides new information on integrating metacognition into professional development programs. Key features include: *Chapter Structure.Teacher reflections at the beginning of each chapter illustrate teacher thinking about the chapter topic and metacognitive connections at the end of each chapter link its content with that of the preceding and following chapters. *Contributor Expertise. Few volumes can boast of a more luminous cast of contributing authors (see table of contents). *Comprehensiveness. Twenty chapters organized into four sections plus a summarizing chapter make this the primary reference work in the field of literacy-based metacognition. This volume is appropriate for reading researchers, professional development audiences, and for upper-level undergraduate and graduate level courses in reading and educational psychology.

Book excerpt: This book examines the relationship between Chinese college-level test takers' strategy use and reading test performance using a Structural Equation Modelling Approach. With a large sample of Chinese college-level test takers, the book investigates the underlying structure of the EFL reading test. It suggests implications for classroom teachers and testing researchers about the relationship between metacognitive and cognitive strategy use in testing contexts.

Book excerpt: There is an urgent crisis regarding literacy among adolescents, posing challenges for teachers, parents, administrators, and other stakeholders. The purpose of this study was to evaluate if the use of select elementary school strategies viz. explicit metacognitive instruction, cooperative learning, autonomy, and multimodal access on middle school student have positive outcomes in reading. While transitioning from elementary to middle school the researcher observed middle students still required scaffolding and strategies used in elementary school which led to choosing this focus. The researcher reviewed literature on the literacy crisis in the American middle school system, literacy among English Language Learners, and adolescents' perceptions about reading. The researcher then shifted to exploring the available solutions and decided upon specific strategies that address the developmental, learning style and linguistic needs of adolescents: effectiveness of multimodal access to texts, cooperative learning, literacy stations, and explicit teaching of metacognitive strategies used in reading. This study was conducted using a qualitative case study with a reflective semi-structured questionnaire, and student feedback was coded for emergent themes. The instruments used include pre-and post-assessment data using benchmark Star Reading, and daily 50-minute lessons over a six-month period of time incorporating the above-mentioned strategies. The researcher found that the balanced implementation of the strategies mentioned had a positive impact on student outcomes in reading overall, and students' feedback revealed social-emotional support as well as help with comprehension and engagement. Based upon the research findings, it is recommended that instructional leaders implement equitable professional development, and practitioners at the middle school/junior high grade level draw heavily on elementary school strategies to meet the learning styles and linguistic needs of students. This intervention is imperative, and the learning gap from elementary school must be bridged, as students advance to high school and beyond, and must meet expectations in higher education and the workforce. The study concluded the educational field would benefit from training middle school teachers in literacy strategies approaching the whole adolescent, meeting their social-emotional, developmental, and linguistic needs. Further research on connections between socioemotional learning and academics should be explored. Key words: adolescent literacy, literacy strategies, explicit metacognitive instruction, cooperative learning, literacy stations, multimodal access, English Language Learners

Book excerpt: Developmental psychologists have been interested in metacognitive phenomena since the early 1970s, while reading researchers have been interested in awareness, monitoring, and strategy use for text-processing as part of a shift in focus from text factors to reader factors in reading. A great many research studies have been conducted by psychologists and reading researchers under the rubric of metacognition. Unlike other chapters fom some edited books which present only syntheses of this burgeoning research literature, this volume not only presents the literature but provides analysis about its usefulness for researchers and practitioners. It also presents a discussion of important methodological dilemmas within these research literatures.

Book excerpt: The main purpose of this project was to determine how specific reading strategies impacted student understanding of genetics, evolution, populations, and ecology in high school biology. Forty-seven students in three achievement levels were tracked for changes in their abilities to answer high-order questions, as well as changes in their attitudes and motivations. Teacher attitude and motivations were also measured. The study revealed that students showed overall improvement in high-order thinking compared to non-treatment, and that student attitudes and motivations improved slightly during the project. Teacher attitudes and motivations improved as students progressed through the treatment.
