It was found that the stoichiometric mixtures showed increased modulus, tensile strength and relaxation times. Book excerpt: A series of three butadiene/methacrylic acid copolymers and three butadiene/2-methyl-5-vinyl pyridine copolymers were evaluated for Young's modulus and stress relaxation modulus between -75C and +75C. Corresponding members of the acidic and basic copolymer series were stoichiometrically combined to provide an intermolecularly hydrogen bonded material which was tested in the same manner. Comparison between the observed modulustemperature curves for the mixed material and the average of the parent materials' modulus-temperature curve reveals a regular, temperature dependent increase in Young's modulus above Tg. Below Tg the rate of increase decreases. The stress relaxation curves of the acidic, basic and mixed copolymers were normalized with respect to Tg. The curves were then differentiated to provide relaxation spectrum curves. The comparison of the average relaxation spectrum curves for the parent materials with that obtained for the mixed material shows depression of short time relaxation mechanisms. Infrared investigations of the hydrogen bond absorptions in stretched films are also discussed. (Author).

Book excerpt: In an effort to determine the effects of ionic interactions on the physical properties of polymers, two series of butadiene copolymers were tested for stress strain and stress relaxation behavior. The first group of copolymers were those of butadiene and methacrylic acid which were converted to their anionic form by titration with LiOCH3. The second series were copolymers with 2-methyl, 5-vinyl pyridine which were reacted with CH3I to form the polycations. Finally stoichiometric mixed polysalts were prepared by mixing solutions of the oppositely charged polyions. The modulus-temperature currves of the various materials showed relatively stable plateau values over moderate temperature spans. Both the pyridinium copolymers and the mixed polysalts showed sharp decreases in modulus over a narrow temperature range. This unusual behavior was confirmed in the stress relaxation tests, being manifested as a rapid increase in the shift factors and E(visc), the activation energy for viscous flow. The patterns indicate a transition of one form or another but whether it is indicative of the onset of ionic interchange is not clear. (Author).

Rheology has long been treated as the theoretical foundation of polymer processing, and from this standpoint it is difficult to overesti mate its importance in practice. Rheology plays an important role in developing our ideas on the nature of viscoelastic behavior in connection with the structural features of polymers and composites based on them. This expands the possibilities of employing rheological methods to characterize a variety of materials and greatly magnifies the interest in this field of research. The rheological properties of polymer systems are studied experimen tally, chiefly under conditions of shear and tensile strains. One explana tion is that many aspects of polymer material processing are associated with the stretching of melts or a combination of shear and tensile strains. In scientific investigations, either periodic or continuous conditions of shear deformation are employed. Each mode provides widespread infor mation. In periodic deformation, most attention is generally given to conditions with low deformation amplitudes that do not alter the structure of the polymer system during an experiment (the region of linear deformation conditions). Here the viscoelastic parameters are generally determined with respect to the frequency. Continuous deforma tion involves considerable strains, and may be attended by significant reversible and irreversible changes in the structure of a polymer.

Thin, supported, polymer films are subject to interfacial instabilities, due largely to competing intermolecular forces, that cause them to rupture and dewet the substrate. The addition of nanoparticles (such as clay sheets, metallic or semiconductor nanocrystals, carbon nanotubes, etc.) to polymers can substantially affect bulk properties, such as the glass transition and viscosity, and influence the processability of the material. In this dissertation, we contribute to a fundamental understanding of the role of interfacial interactions on both the instabilities exhibited by polymer thin films and the properties displayed by polymer-nanoparticle mixtures. While conditions under which the destabilization of compositionally homogeneous thin films occurs are relatively well understood, the mechanisms of film stabilization in many two-component thin film systems are still unresolved. We demonstrate that the addition of a miscible component to an unstable film can provide an effective means of stabilization. The details of the stabilization mechanism are understood in terms of the compositional dependence of both the macroscopic wetting parameters and the effective interface potential for the system. We find that the suppression of dewetting in the system is not an equilibrium stabilization process and propose a mechanism by which the increased resistance to dewetting may occur. There is also significant interest in understanding the extraordinary property enhancement of polymers that are enabled by the addition of only small concentrations of nanoparticles. If these effects could be distilled down to a few simple rules, they could be exploited in the design of materials for specific applications. In this work, the influence of C60 nanoparticles on the bulk dynamical properties of three polymers is examined. Based on the findings from a range of measurement techniques, including differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical analysis, dynamic rheology and neutron scattering, we propose that the changes in the glass transition temperature for the polymer-C60 mixtures can be understood in terms of a percolation interpretation of the glass transition. The proposed mechanism is also characterized computationally.
