Book excerpt: This paper presents findings of an empirical investigation into the effects of interprovincial migration on indiviuals' earnings, based on the newly available Longitudinal Administrative Database. The main results are based on a difference model which estimates the effects of mobility on earnings which implicitly controls for initial earnings levels & other fixed effects, as well as other influences captured by the regressors included in the models. Variations in those effects by age, sex, and province of origin are noted. Pre- and post-move earnings profiles are also analyzed, offering support for the validity of the difference model approach and indicating the speed at which movers are integrated into local labour markets after their moves. Implications of the results are discussed and possible directions for future research are suggested.

Book excerpt: Using a unique dataset based on income tax records, authors Kathleen Day and Stanley Winer examine the factors influencing the decision to migrate within Canada, paying special attention to the role of regional variation in the generosity of public policies including unemployment insurance, taxation, and public expenditure. The influence of extraordinary events such as the election of a separatist government in Quebec and the closure of the east coast cod fishery is also considered. They look at why we ought to be concerned about public policies that interfere with market-based incentives to move, provide a wealth of information on interregional differences in public policies and market conditions, and examine what other researchers have discovered about fiscally induced migration, culminating in a discussion of the likely impact of various policy changes on migration and provincial unemployment rates. The authors' assessment of the lessons to be learned from their own and past research on policy-induced migration in Canada will be of interest to students of migration and policy makers alike.

Book excerpt: Investigates the topic of interprovincial mobility by analyzing its determinants at the individual level. Data for the study come from the recently available Longitudinal Administrative Databank, a representative sample of Canadian tax filers. The analysis uses a panel logit model approach where the probability that a person moves from one year to the next is specified to be a function of various environmental factors (current province of residence, provincial unemployment rate, area size of residence), personal attributes (language, marital status, age, presence of children), some key labour market characteristics (earnings level, receipt of unemployment insurance and social assistance), and a series of year variables which capture any general shifts in the extent of interprovincial mobility over time. All non-student adults aged 20-54 are included in the analysis, while separate models are estimated for four different age groups for each sex, thereby facilitating the comparison of mobility patterns among these different groups.

Book excerpt: Rising income inequality has been at the forefront of public debate in Canada in recent years, yet there is still much to learn about the economic forces driving the distribution of earnings and income in this country and how they might evolve in the future. With research showing that the tax-and-transfer system is losing the ability to counteract income disparity, the need for policy-makers to understand the factors at play is all the more urgent. Income Inequality provides a comprehensive review of Canadian inequality trends, including changing earnings and income dynamics among the middle class and top earners, wage and job polarization across provinces, and persistent poverty among vulnerable groups. The Institute for Research on Public Policy (IRPP), in collaboration with the Canadian Labour Market and Skills Researcher Network (CLSRN), presents new evidence by some of the country’s leading experts on the impact of skills and education, unionization and labour relations laws, as well as the complex interplay of redistributive policies and politics over time. Amid growing anxieties about the economic prospects of the middle class, Income Inequality will serve to inform the public discourse on inequality, an issue that ultimately concerns all Canadians.

Book excerpt: "The 'brain drain,' a much-discussed issue in the late 1990s, has largely faded from public and academic discussions, perhaps largely because recent evidence indicates that the overall number of Canadians leaving the country in any given year is relatively low (on the order of one tenth of 1% of the population in any given year) and is not necessarily as concentrated at the top of the occupation scale or in certain sectors as previously conjectured. Using Statistics Canada's Longitudinal Administrative Database (LAD), constructed from individuals' tax records, this paper begins by reporting more up-to-date data on the rates of leaving, as well as of return. The main body of the paper then presents new evidence on one aspect of this dynamic that has not previously been studied: the effects on earnings of leaving the country and then returning."--Unedited text from document.

Book excerpt: While there is a broad consensus that North American economic integration has benefits for Canadians' standard of living, there are also concerns that deeper economic integration may restrict Canada's ability to pursue domestic goals in a number of important areas. To address these issues, Industry Canada and the former Human Resources Development Canada jointly commissioned original research for a Workshop on 'Social and labour Market Aspects of North American Linkage'. This volume contains the research papers, comments and panel proceedings from the Workshop.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Vsi predstavljeni primeri so rezultat večletnih znanstvenoraziskovalnih prizadevanj in aktivnega delovanja avtorjev v različnih projektih s področja mobilnosti.
