Book excerpt: Diabetic Adolescents and their Families presents an innovative approach to the study of coping with chronic illness by focusing on the developmental context in its description of a longitudinal study of families with a diabetic or a healthy adolescent. Inge Seiffge-Krenke considers perspectives of the ill adolescents, their parents, and the physicians treating them. Highlighted topics include typical stressors, individual and family coping strategies, and psychosocial consequences associated with diabetes. The author also examines the changes that occur in adolescents' self-concept and body image and analyses their relationships with parents, physicians, friends, and romantic partners as sources of support and of stress. Numerous case studies illustrate the difficulty of balancing normative development and adherence to the therapeutic regimen. Integrating clinical concerns with fundamental findings of developmental psychology, this book will be of value to anyone with an interest in the study of adolescent health psychology.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled "Coping, Social Support, and Depressive Symptoms of Older Adults with Diabetes Mellitus" Submitted by Cheng Yuk Ling, Tavia for the degree of Master of Philosophy at the University of Hong Kong in July, 1999. Diabetes mellitus is a prevalent chronic illness in the Hong Kong population, especially among the elderly people. The illness has enormous impact on the psychosocial well-being of the patients because it is characterized by certain unpredictable dilemmas that result in uncertainty and powerlessness in the patients. It is important to evaluate the personal factor and psychosocial context that enable the elderly patients to adapt to the illness effectively. This study examined the effects of coping and social support on the adaptation to Type II diabetes mellitus of the elderly Chinese patients. The subjects of this study were 200 elderly diabetic patients (84 males, 116 females) with regular follow-up at two diabetic out-patient clinics. Their age ranged from 60 to 92 years (mean = 70.96, SD = 5.84). The duration of illness since its first detection ranged from half a year to 36 years (mean = 9.14, SD = 6.95). Data were collected by face-to-face interview with a structured questionnaire. Participation was voluntary and anonymous. ii The results indicated that the participants did not perceived diabetes as severely threatening to their daily activities. Compared with a normal sample of elderly people, these diabetic elderly patients did not exhibited a higher level of depressive symptoms. Both coping and social support were found to play an important role in the adaptation to diabetes mellitus through their direct and buffering effect. Among the coping factors identified, concealment of feeling was most significantly associated with depressive symptoms as measured by GDS-15. General social support appeared to be more beneficial than diabetic-specific support and support from friend tended to play a more important role in the adaptation to diabetes mellitus than support from family. iii DOI: 10.5353/th_b2979786 Subjects: Diabetes in old age - China - Hong Kong Adjustment (Psychology) in old age - China - Hong Kong Diabetics - Social networks - China - Hong Kong Diabetes in old age

An understanding of these issues can enable health care professionals to assist their patients effectively. The second edition of the acclaimed title Psychology in Diabetes Care gives background information and practical guidelines needed by healthcare professionals to address the cognitive, emotional and behavioural issues surrounding diabetes management. The book bridges the gap between psychological research on self-care and management of diabetes, and the delivery of care and services provided by the diabetes care team. Written jointly by psychologists active in diabetes research and practising clinicians, Psychology in Diabetes Care, Second Edition provides a practical evidence-based approach to intervention in diabetes care.

Book excerpt: If there is a single challenge a person faces in every stage of life from birth to death, it is the necessity of coping with life's exigencies. These often include health problems, social stress, and perceived difficulties. The ability to deal with these issues defines an individual to a large extent and can accelerate or brake one's development in the multitude of mental and physical pathways intrinsic to life. Coping behaviours include talking out a problem, crying, laughing, relaxation, ignoring the problem, praying, looking for the positive aspects of a situation, assuming everything is terrible, taking medication, hoping a problem will go away, attacking the problem with willpower, cognitive therapy etc. This new book examines new research which will shed light on coping behaviours in a vast array of disease situations.

At least 17.7 million individuals in the United States are caregivers of an older adult with a health or functional limitation. The nation's family caregivers provide the lion's share of long-term care for our older adult population. They are also central to older adults' access to and receipt of health care and community-based social services. Yet the need to recognize and support caregivers is among the least appreciated challenges facing the aging U.S. population. Families Caring for an Aging America examines the prevalence and nature of family caregiving of older adults and the available evidence on the effectiveness of programs, supports, and other interventions designed to support family caregivers. This report also assesses and recommends policies to address the needs of family caregivers and to minimize the barriers that they encounter in trying to meet the needs of older adults.
