Book excerpt: Synthesizing a vast body of empirical research and organizing it around a comprehensive conceptual model, this book is recognized as the definitive reference on adult attachment. The authors explain how what began as a theory of child development is now used to conceptualize and study nearly all aspects of social functioning across the lifespan, including mental representations of self and others, emotion regulation, personal goals and strivings, couple relationships, caregiving, sexuality, psychopathology, psychotherapy, and organizational behavior. The origins and measurement of individual differences in adult attachment are examined, as is the question of whether and how attachment patterns can change. New to This Edition: *Reflects major advances, including hundreds of new studies. *Clarifies and extends the authors' influential model of attachment-system functioning. *Cutting-edge content on genetics and on the neural and hormonal substrates of attachment. *Increased attention to the interplay among attachment and other behavioral systems, such as caregiving and sexuality. *Expanded discussion of attachment processes in counseling and psychotherapy. *Additional coverage of leadership, group dynamics, and religion.

Book excerpt: Human sexuality touches us all, pun intended. We all either enjoy it, struggle with it, or may have been victims of it. Sexuality is not just about sex, but about human sexual function, the physiology of sex, the hormones involved and how they affect us, and the cultural norms related to it. Sexual function and dysfunction are closely tied to one’s self-esteem, self-respect, and to relationships with intimate partners. Human Sexuality: Function, Dysfunction, Paraphilias, and Relationships, explores the interplay of intimacy and sexuality; how it can enhance relationships, and how it can negatively affect them, or be affected by them. When individuals or partners encounter sexual problems or dysfunctions it can have a long-lasting affect both biologically and psychologically. Dr. Rokach explores the causes and the reasons that these dysfunctions are maintained, and successful treatment methods. Chapters on sexual offenses and paraphilias and what treatment options are available to sexual offenders are also included. This book is the first book to place sexuality where it belongs, within the context of relationships demonstrating how sexuality relates to intimacy by both enhancing and negatively affecting it. Explains psychological, biological and sociological theories of sexuality Addresses sexual dysfunctions according to various models of sex therapy Discusses the biological, developmental and sociological theories of sexual orientation Explores the specific hormones in male and female sexual behavior

Book excerpt: There is a scarcity of scholarly literature examining relational satisfaction among long distance (non-proximal) romantic relationships (NPRRs). Understanding the unique constructs and contextual factors of this population through an adult attachment theoretical lens has implications for clinical practice and future research. Non-proximal romantic relationships serve as an increasing relational form given modern social mobility and technological advances. Distanced couples challenge Western relational ideals that postulate frequent face-to-face communication and proximal shared activities are critical for relational satisfaction, quality and longevity. Most published studies lack a theoretical framework for understanding relational dynamics of distanced dyads. The current study applied adult attachment theory to examine specific domains of relational satisfaction reported by NPRRs, utilizing attachment style (i.e., secure, fearful, dismissing, preoccupied) as a moderator. Participants included 126 self-identified NPRR partners who completed a demographic questionnaire, the Experiences in Close Relationships Scale, Revised (ECR-R), and the Marital Satisfaction Inventory, Revised (MSI-R). Results indicated that securely attached partners had higher levels of relational satisfaction than insecure partners (i.e., fearful, dismissive, preoccupied) in the areas of global satisfaction, affective communication, problem-solving skills, time spent together or common interests, finances, and sexual relations. Conversely, the fearfully attached NPRR partners reported the least satisfaction in each domain. Significant findings were not found for an interaction of relationship cycle (separation versus reunion) and attachment style on the level of relational satisfaction. The results determined there was no correlation between frequency of face-to-face visits with relational satisfaction. The current study provides clinical implications for understanding relating at a distance (i.e., communication dynamics) using attachment-based therapies (i.e., Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy), and offers valuable insight and perspectives for clinical practice. This study also provides a novel approach to relational satisfaction by identifying specific domains of relational distress (i.e., problem-solving skills, finances, and sexual relations) in relation to adult attachment style. Overall, the current findings indicate attachment style is a salient construct in distanced romantic partners' relational satisfaction regardless of contextual variations (i.e., frequency of face-to-face visits). Interpretation and limitations of the findings, applied clinical implications, and future directions are discussed.

Book excerpt: This study examined the association between level of differentiation of self on romantic relationship outcomes (i.e., attachment, relationship satisfaction, and gridlock) while, additionally, examining the possibility of communication (i.e., validation and withdrawal) as a mediator. Participants (N = 463) were recruited using Amazon's Mechanical Turk (MTurk) to complete an online survey and had to be in a committed romantic relationship to be eligible. After controlling for psychological distress, relationship length, and gender, the results indicated a significant and direct relationship between differentiation and relationship outcomes and an indirect relationship through validation and withdrawal. Specifically, differentiation was directly, negatively associated with gridlock ([beta] = -16, p = .003), avoidant attachment ([beta] = -.13, p = .032), and anxious attachment ([beta] = -.51, p
