By exploring this question and revealing the everyday social processes by which high schoolers define white identities, Pamela Perry offers much-needed insights into the social construction of race and whiteness among youth. Through ethnographic research and in-depth interviews of students in two demographically distinct U.S. high schools—one suburban and predominantly white; the other urban, multiracial, and minority white—Perry shares students’ candor about race and self-identification. By examining the meanings students attached (or didn’t attach) to their social lives and everyday cultural practices, including their taste in music and clothes, she shows that the ways white students defined white identity were not only markedly different between the two schools but were considerably diverse and ambiguous within them as well. Challenging reductionist notions of whiteness and white racism, this study suggests how we might go “beyond whiteness” to new directions in antiracist activism and school reform. Shades of White is emblematic of an emerging second wave of whiteness studies that focuses on the racial identity of whites. It will appeal to scholars and students of anthropology, sociology, and cultural studies, as well as to those involved with high school education and antiracist activities.

This project shows that while many white students know how to speak the language of "correctness" and to some degree even believe in what they are saying, their limited personal experiences with those who are racially different from themselves often bump against their beliefs about racial acceptance and equality. This project investigates the ways that one facet of identity, whiteness, influences teachers’ understanding of their roles in the schools and informs their decision making within their practice. It explores several life stories of five teacher candidates, all born after 1985. Through these stories we get a sense of how white prospective teachers imagine themselves as teachers of diverse students and how they imagine developing equitable practices. This work advocates that teacher educators help pre-service teachers unpack and understand their biases in order to facilitate their students in balancing their life experiences with whom they imagine themselves to be as teachers.

The research hypotheses were as follows: (H1) African-American students at predominantly white colleges with Pre-encounter stage attitudes will be less likely to report mastery of the developmental tasks of Clarifying Purpose, Mature Interpersonal Relationships, Academic Autonomy and Salubrious Lifestyle. (H2) African-American students at predominantly white colleges with Encounter and Internalization stage attitudes will be more likely to report the mastery of the developmental tasks of Clarifying Purpose, Mature Interpersonal Relationships, Academic Autonomy and Salubrious Lifestyle. (H3) African-American students at predominantly white colleges with Immersion stage attitudes will be less likely to report mastery of developmental tasks of Clarifying Purpose, Mature Interpersonal Relationships, Academic Autonomy and Salubrious Lifestyle. The author used two theoretical models: the Theory Racial Identity Development, Cross (1971) and Chickering's (1969) Theory of Psychosocial Development. To operationalize both theories, the Racial Identity Attitudes Scale, Parham and Helms (1981) was used to measure racial identity attitudes and the Student Developmental Task and Lifestyle Inventory was used to measure student development (Winston, Miller, and Prince, 1987). The sample consisted of 119 African-American college students who were members of the Black Student unions at three predominantly White public colleges. Hierarchical multiple regression was used to determine the relationship between personal background characteristics, the racial identity attitudes and student developmental tasks. Pre-encounter (anti-Black) and Immersion (pro-Black) stage attitudes were less likely to report the mastery of the tasks associated with mature interpersonal relationships. Students with Encounter (pro-Black) stage attitudes were more likely to report the mastery of the Establishing and Clarifying Purpose task and Salubrious Lifestyle. Personal background characteristics showed the strongest effects. For Mature Interpersonal Relationships tasks, the strongest effects were class level and gender. Females were more likely to report the mastery of the Mature Interpersonal Relationships task. Four effects were stronger when Salubrious Lifestyle was examined. These were gender (males were likely to report the mastery of the Salubrious Lifestyle task while in college), income level, the percentage of Blacks in one's high school at the time of graduation, and the predominant race of teachers at the time of graduation. The findings of this study have implications for student affairs professionals such as counselors and residence life staff.
