For what skills, grade levels, content areas, and type of students are computer applications most effective? Can computer applications improve student attitude toward school and decrease drop-out rates? Discover what the research reveals--in this provocative new book--about these and other crucial questions concerning the impact of computer-based instruction. Assessing the Impact of Computer-Based Instruction provides the most comprehensive and up-to-date summary available on the effects of computer applications on both student achievement and attitudes. Within its pages are also the most extensive bibliography ever prepared on past reviews of research, current reports and articles, and dissertations in the area of computer uses in education. This groundbreaking new book provides educational decisionmakers with the facts they need in order to justify the expense and effort of maintaining and expanding the instructional role of computers in schools. It is also useful as a resource text in the pre-service training of computer educators and for graduate students doing research in instructional computing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to a kid to be labeled attention-deficit disordered (ADD)? Or to have "hyperactive" added to the label (ADHD)? What can teachers do to boost the success of students with attention and behavioral difficulties? Are we relying too much on medication for these kids and not enough on new perspectives on learning, child development, the child's socioeconomic and cultural background, biological and psychological research, and the learner's emotional and social needs? Armstrong urges educators and parents to look for the positive characteristics in learners who may carry the ADD/ADHD label. Are they bursting with energy? Are they intensely creative? Do they enjoy hands-on learning? Are they natural leaders? Are they unusually introspective and reflective? We need to look beyond a "deficit" approach and embrace a more holistic view of learners that includes teaching to their multiple intelligences, learning styles, and other brain-friendly approaches. For example, here are some classroom activities for kids who "can't sit still" Learning spelling words by having kids jump up out of their seats on the vowels and sit down on the consonants. Mastering the multiplication tables by forming a conga line, moving around the classroom counting from 1 to 30 out loud, and on every multiple of 3 shaking their hips and legs. Showing patterns of molecular bonding in chemistry class through a "swing your atom" square dance.

Book excerpt: This study investigated the processes by which variation in format for presenting multiplication problems influenced children's motivation and achievement. The three multiplication drill and practice instructional methods were: (1) computer-assisted instruction (cai) with a reward game, (2) computer-assisted instruction without a reward game, and (3) paper-and-pencil. A sample of 69 fourth-grade students was classified into one of two groups, labelled achiever or underachiever, and the students were randomly assigned to one of the three instructional methods. Results indicated that both achievement and motivation were related to instructional method. When motivation was defined as amount of time the student participated in the study, the two cai groups were more motivated than the paper-and-pencil students. When achievement was defined as the number of multiplication problems completed correctly, the group of students using cai without a reward game achieved more than the group using cai with a reward game. When achievement was measured by pre- and post-achievement test comparison, there were no significant effects. There were no significant interactions between method of instruction and type of achiever. (Jdd).
