In particular, the biomechanical characteristics of the kicking leg and their influence on ball speed have been investigated. However, the impact of attentional focus cues on kicking performance has yet to be examined. The purpose of this study was to investigate if focusing attention externally resulted in better performance on the Loughborough Soccer Shooting (LSST) and increased joint angular velocities compared internal attentional focus or control. A second purpose of the study was to measure participants' focus of attention during practice by use of a questionnaire. To evaluate the effect of attentional focus on LSST performance and kicking mechanics, five male and seven female soccer players (age=16.73±0.90) completed a three-day study. Participants completed 30 trials of the LSST following instructions designed to induce an external focus of attention (EXT), the internal focus of attention (INT), or control (CON). Results showed no significant difference in joint angular velocities at the hip, knee, and ankle between attentional foci. Further, there was no significant difference in the LSST scores between attentional foci. However, EXT and INT resulted in a decreased LSST performance time compared to CON and increased ball velocity with EXT condition compared to CON. Qualitative data showed that participants focused externally in CON, EXT, and INT conditions 39%, 58%, and 31% of the time, respectively. It was concluded that EXT or INT focus instructions are superior to CON directions when performing a maximal effort instep kick.

The researchers used pendulum catapult to launch a soccer ball from 8.5 meters at the participant. Ten female active NCAA division 1 soccer players received one of three cues, or no cue, and then had five trials to control the ball onto an artificial turf mat to score 1-3 points depending on where the ball landed. Participants completed a manipulation check survey to ascertain the efficacy of the coaching cues. A motion capture system was used to quantify the movement and processed through Visual3D software for the joint angles during 10 frames before and after ball contact. A repeated-measures ANOVA found no significant difference in any of the kinematic variables nor the performance measures between the different cuing conditions, although there were trends within the performance data indicating a higher performance in the holistic cuing condition (mean(sd): .68 (.40)) compared to no cue condition (mean(sd): .28 (.25)). The means of the survey questions indicated strong compliance with the instructions. Given the novelty and exploratory nature of the study, the researchers concluded that the time interval analyzed was insufficient to reveal how the different coaching cues influenced the movement performance. Further analysis is required to assess different kinematic variables and time intervals within the movement.

Book excerpt: Soccer is one of the most popular sports in the world and the substantial increase in participation over the last decade adds significance to understanding kicking mechanics as kicking is a key skill during a game. The biomechanics of soccer kicking have been widely investigated and there is a conventional belief that a tradeoff exists between speed and accuracy during kicking performance. However, the kinetics and kinematics of the kicking leg during the approach to the ball remain unclear and whether or not instep soccer kicks can be performed without a speed-accuracy tradeoff. The purpose of this study was to investigate the kinetic and kinematic differences between accurate and maximal effort soccer kicking in female soccer players. Twenty female soccer players from the college club or varsity level performed three trials of an accurate kick and three trials of a maximal effort kick. Bilateral hip, knee and ankle joint angles and velocities and ground reaction forces (GRFs) of the kicking leg (KL) and plant leg (PL) were calculated. In addition, correlation coefficients were calculated between variables in each condition. During maximal effort kicking, players significantly increased peak hip, knee and ankle angles (p = 0.000, p = 0.000, p = 0.034), angular velocities (p = 0.000, p = 0.000, p = 0.004), and foot velocity (p = 0.000) in the KL. This was likely the result of the significant increase in peak horizontal GRF in the KL (p = 0.000) and PL (p = 0.000). Peak horizontal GRF in the KL had the strongest correlation with foot linear velocity in accurate kicking (R = 0.77*) compared to in maximal effort kicking (R = 60*), and had a stronger influence on foot velocity compared to peak horizontal GRF in the PL in both accurate (R = 0.31*) and maximal effort (0.23) conditions. This suggests that peak horizontal GRF in the KL, rather than in the PL, plays a more important role in kick velocity, especially when kicking accurately. Results indicate that increasing horizontal GRF in the KL in both conditions is key to improving velocity since that variable is highly correlated in each condition. In addition, less variation of horizontal GRFs in the KL in maximal effort kicking indicate faster kicks result in more consistent foot velocities and suggests that players reduce variability as they approach maximum velocity. These results provide evidence that accuracy may not have to be sacrificed when kicks are faster if players practice accurate performances when kicking with maximum velocity due to the less variability in the initial programmed pattern of movement during fast performances. Coaches and trainers may utilize these results to develop training protocols that involve increasing GRFs of the KL and practicing kicks that are both accurate and fast to increase overall accuracy during maximum velocity instep soccer kicks.

An external focus of attention has been shown as more beneficial than internal focus in the learning and performance of the vertical jump (e.g., Wulf, & Dufek, 2009). The current study investigated the effects of a combination of attentional focus (internal vs. external) and cue type (anticipated vs. spontaneous) on vertical jump height using a Just Jump contact mat. Participants were intercollegiate athletes (N = 22; male = 3 and female = 19). The mean age of the sample was 19.5, ± 1.10 years. Participants performed a vertical jump under four counterbalanced conditions; internal-spontaneous, internal-anticipated, external-spontaneous, and external-anticipated. A significant difference was observed for attentional focus conditions, with external-spontaneous having higher jump heights than the two internal focus conditions (internalspontaneous, p = .033, and internal-anticipated, p = .013). No significant difference existed between the two external focus conditions (p = 1.00). External focus of attention was observed to be most beneficial in vertical jump performance.

Book excerpt: Focusing attention on an external cue (EF), as opposed to an internal focus of attention (IF), has been shown to improve reaction time (RT) for track and field athletes during a sprint start (Kovacs et al., 2018). The track sprint start is a rapid, discrete, whole body movement whereby athletes need to rely on a motor program that has all parameters specified before movement initiation. The purpose of this study was to address the question of whether improvements in a sprint start under an EF condition are dependent on the participants’ skill level. Twelve collegiate track sprinters (age 20.8 ±1.7), and twelve collegiate non-sprint athletes (age 20.1±1.2) completed three testing sessions under EF, IF, and no focus instruction (NF) conditions. RT was recorded from the rear starting block. Muscle activation time (EMG) was recorded from the vastus lateralis muscles, and was used to determine pre-motor RT and motor RT. Mean RT was significantly shorter (p0.001) for sprinters (227.7 ms) compared with non-sprinters (273.8 ms). Mean RT for sprinters was significantly shorter (p 0.0001) under the EF (212.11 ms) compared with the IF (234.21 ms) and NF conditions (236.87 ms). Similarly, mean premotor RT under the EF condition (157.75 ms) was significantly shorter (p 0.001) compared with the IF (181.90 ms) and NF (173.60 ms) conditions. No differences in RT and pre-motor RT across conditions were found for non-sprint athletes (p0.05). Motor RT did not differ across the various focus of attention conditions (p0.05) or across experimental groups (p0.05). These results suggest that the beneficial effects of EF on dynamic whole-body movements are manifested at higher skill levels, and that adopting different types of attentional focus interferes with the efficiency of the movement planning processes. Improvement in RT likely originates at the level of central processes during movement preparation (pre-motor RT), and not at the level of peripheral processes associated with excitation-contraction coupling of the muscle fibers (motor RT).
