Book excerpt: This research paper examines and integrates existing studies to develop an intervention research that addresses the potential benefits of mindfulness-based art therapy (MBAT) with school-aged children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in emotional regulation. According to the ADHD Institute (2016), ADHD has a relatively high prevalence rate among children and adolescents of approximately 5.29% and 7.1% respectively. In view of this and the lack of studies specific to this research topic, the goal of this intervention program is to address specific benefits of MBAT in emotional regulation that foster focusing skills, reflective functions on emotions, and organizational skills. A theoretical perspective of "top-down" and "bottom-up" self-regulatory processing as well as the self-expressive and self-reflective functions of art therapy is integrated in this study. Components of the Expressive Therapies Continuum (ETC) are also integrated in the MBAT interventions developed for this population. The purpose of this study is to propose a 10-week group art therapy program geared towards improving emotional regulation in ways that can be practised in an interpersonal setting, giving participants an opportunity to work in a supportive group environment.

Book excerpt: Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder is increasingly being diagnosed in people of all ages, and this book demonstrates how art therapy can not only assist with diagnosis, but also provides a valuable means of helping to improve skills such as concentration and focus, boost self-esteem, and cope with impulsivity. Educational social skills art groups can help with understanding of AD/HD in addition to teaching strategies to relieve the symptoms. Art therapy is also important for alleviating feelings of isolation and confusion that may come with the diagnosis, and, as an ongoing process, it can be a useful tool for checking clients' progress from the initial assessment onwards. In the first part of her book, the author explores ways of using art therapy and of setting up art therapy groups. Her advice and practical suggestions will be useful to anyone with an interest in AD/HD. The later chapters offer therapists more detailed guidance on therapy sessions with clients with AD/HD. Practical and informative, and based on the author's long experience with art therapy and AD/HD, this will be a valuable book for therapists, mental health professionals, and people who live or work with AD/HD.

This study investigated whether art therapy would have a positive effect on the self-esteem of children in foster care and residential programs. A total of eight children from these settings participated in one of two art therapy groups for six weeks using art therapy directives. The art directive for these groups focused on positive feelings and strenghts. Paticipants were administered the Piers-Harris @ as a pre- and post-test measure for self esteem. The results of paired sample t-tests on Piers-Harris total and sub domain scores did not support the hypothesis.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Photo therapy can be an effective intervention to increase self-esteem and self-confidence in children and adolescents with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) . This study evaluated whether a series of photo therapy sessions would increase the self-esteem and self-confidence of a 15-year-old male at home, in the classroom and with his friends. Pre- and post-intervention interviews were conducted with the participant, his mother and his special education teacher. The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (Rosendberg, 1989) was also administered. The results showed a significant increase in the participant's selfesteem and self-confidence. These results indicate that a series of experiential photo therapy sessions can be an effective, age appropriate intervention for increasing self-esteem and self-confidence in adolescent males diagnosed with ADHD.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The purpose of this study is to gain a clearer understanding of the effects that art therapy treatment has on perceptions of loss and self-image with a population of "at-risk" adolescent males. This investigation was carried out in an alternative school for children that had exhausted other public education opportunities. This study involved comparing qualitative interviews conducted with both a treatment group and a non-treatment group upon completion of three months of individual art therapy with the author. Self-image of all participants was assessed at the end of the treatment period using a quantitative scale specifically designed to measure many aspects of self esteem in adolescents. Interviews were analyzed and consistent themes were generated using Grounded Theory of qualitative data analysis. The author had many roles in this research including principal investigator, therapist, alternative school staff member, assessor, and data analyzer. The discussion section of this dissertation suggests possible themes and the ways in which we might learn from these participants and their experiences. Results suggest no differences in self-image or perceptions of loss between treatment group and non-treatment group. Themes that emerged focused around the following: participants viewed themselves as "bad" kids for having been transferred to an alternative school, treatment group participants enjoyed having the opportunity to participate in art therapy, dynamics of the alternative school create both benefits and drawbacks for participants and interview may not be the best means of gathering data from this population. Future investigations along with the possible shortcomings of this research are presented based on the findings of this study."--p.9.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study was conducted to help add knowledge to the literature about supporting children diagnosed with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. It was hypothesized that through the use of group counseling, self-concept and knowledge and understanding of the disorder would increase. The Piers-Harris Self-Concept Scale and a self-constructed survey were the instruments used in the study. The results of the study showed that the level of self-concept of the students in the counseling group did not increase but their knowledge and understanding of ADHD did. The researcher concluded that group counseling similar to that in the study could serve as a useful form of treatment for school counselors in trying to support the emotional wellbeing of students with ADHD.
