Book Synopsis The Effect of Passive Stretching and Isometric Contractions on Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness After a Typical Bout of Exercise by : John W. Gibson

This book was released on 2011 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PURPOSE: Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) is a common response to activities involving lengthening contractions. Muscle inflammation is associated with DOMS and may play an integral role in protecting a muscle from damage and soreness in response to subsequent bouts of lengthening contractions. Research in animals has shown that prior exposure to passive stretching and isometric contractions of a muscle resulting in muscle inflammation attenuates the muscle inflammatory response following subsequent bouts of lengthening contractions. The purpose of this study was to determine whether passive stretching and isometric contractions in humans would reduce DOMS following a typical bout of resistance exercise. METHODS: Thirty untrained male subjects were assigned to a control (C), stretching (S) or isometric (I) contraction group (n=10/group). In the week prior to the typical resistance training bout subjects in S and I were exposed to 3 separate sessions involving 5 minutes of passive stretching or maximal isometric contractions, respectively. Passive and active soreness, thigh girth, and relaxed knee angle were assessed prior to intervention and on days 1, 2, 4, and 8 following the bout of resistance exercise. RESULTS: Passive and active muscle soreness increased similarly in all groups. However, active soreness returned higher values than passive soreness at several time points following resistance exercise. Peak soreness occurred at 48h post exercise. Thigh girth and relaxed knee angle reached their highest values at 5 minutes following resistance exercise however there were no differences between the groups. CONCLUSIONS: The present study demonstrates that a typical bout of resistance exercise is sufficient to cause measurable levels of DOMS in untrained subjects and that subjects are more sensitive to active measures of DOMS compared to a passive assessment. Nevertheless the passive stretching and isometric contraction interventions did nothing to reduce DOMS in the current subjects.

Book Synopsis Biomechanical Performance and Relevant Mechanism of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation for Neuromusculoskeletal Disorders by : Qipeng Song
Download or read book Biomechanical Performance and Relevant Mechanism of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation for Neuromusculoskeletal Disorders written by Qipeng Song and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-11-23 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biomechanical performance is a key to evaluating effectiveness in physical medicine and rehabilitation for neuromusculoskeletal disorders. Assessments can be applied to degenerative dysfunction (e.g., falls or knee osteoarthritis in older adults) and sports-related injuries (e.g., ankle sprain or anterior cruciate ligament injury). Patients' body movements and daily activity functions can be compared to the state of pre-injury condition or to the level of healthy individuals. Some cutting-edge studies have gone a step further and used biomechanical performance to develop physical medicine and rehabilitation approaches and explore the mechanisms behind their effectiveness. However, such studies are still relatively rare. This research topic is intended to encourage more relevant projects to be published. This research topic aims to encourage researchers to use biomechanical performance to design advanced physical medicine and rehabilitation approaches, evaluate the effectiveness of the rehabilitation approaches, and explore the mechanisms by which rehabilitation approaches work for neuromusculoskeletal disorders. Some studies have developed stretching approaches for the rehabilitation of knee osteoarthritis in older adults by measuring biomechanical performance during functional activities. Some studies indicated that the mechanism of physical activity to reduce falls in older adults lies in its effectiveness in increasing proprioceptive sensitivity, and further indicated that rehabilitation of proprioception may be a key to reducing falls in the fall-prone older adult population. Some other studies analyzed biomechanical performance in ankle ligament injuries to understand when, how, and why ligaments fail. As a result, this research topic will expand the application of biomechanical performance to better understand and treat neuromusculoskeletal disorders.

Book Synopsis Sports Performance Massage by : Steve Bedford
Download or read book Sports Performance Massage written by Steve Bedford and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-09-30 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sports Performance Massage instructs the student and practising therapist to use a combination of experience and scientific evidence to inform their sports massage practice, particularly when working with athletic populations. Strength and conditioning coaches, managers and athletes frequently ask questions about the best use of sports massage in order to recover quicker from injury and fatigue and improve performance. Sports Performance Massage empowers the therapist and gives them greater confidence by improving their scientific understanding when working with injured or competitive athletes. The exciting new volume covers all the aspects required to make a highly skilled, confident and employable sports massage therapist. Working with high-level athletes requires an additional skill level compared to working with the general public. Furthermore, advanced massage skills taught in this book, such as soft tissue release and trigger point therapy, are essential when working on muscular adhesions and injured areas. Pregnant athletes, those with disabilities, contraindications and athletes with special requirements have also been considered. Sports Performance Massage is a learning and research aid for those studying vocational sports massage courses as well as those studying other courses where massage forms part of the undergraduate and postgraduate degree, such as sports therapy, sports rehabilitation, osteopathy and physiotherapy. Unlike other sports massage books, Sports performance Massage has a strong academic focus, allowing the graduate therapist to stay up to date with the latest research in their respective field.

Book Synopsis Stretch Intensity and the Inflammatory Response: A Paradigm Shift by : Nikos C. Apostolopoulos
Download or read book Stretch Intensity and the Inflammatory Response: A Paradigm Shift written by Nikos C. Apostolopoulos and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-12-27 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this manuscript, practitioners and students who are concerned with sports and rehabilitation medicine, kinesiology, as well as coaches and athletes, are introduced to numerous concepts, including mechanotransduction, inflammation, pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines, calpains, the extracellular matrix, neutrophils and macrophages, and their relevance to stretching, particularly stretching intensity. Although the quantitative parameters of training, duration, and frequency are important, it is the qualitative criterion of intensity (“how much”) that the author suggests is ultimately of greater concern. Intensity, the rate and magnitude of force, may be responsible for the proper recovery, regeneration, and adaptation of the musculoskeletal tissues from training, competition, or rehabilitation from injuries. Research suggests that too much force results in the stimulation of an inflammatory response, one associated with a biochemical feedback emerging from a mechanical stimulus. The intent of this manuscript is twofold: to initiate the discussion of the importance of stretching intensity with regard to proper recovery, regeneration, and adaptation, and to suggest that researchers need to explore its potential role in addressing numerous inflammatory (RA) and non-inflammatory (OA, recurrent tendinitis etc.) musculoskeletal conditions as well.
