Book excerpt: With increased pressure on school districts to increase state test scores, time allocated for physical activity has been drastically decreased in order to provide more learning time for core subjects (Ardoy et al., 2014; Coe et al., 2006; Donnelly & Lambourne, 2011; Ma et al., 2014; Sallis et al., 1999). Thus, extreme pressure is placed on young students. This stress can lead to a high level of anxiety, an inability to focus, stay on task. Consequently, when students do not have a proper outlet to expend excess energy, there is great potential for classroom management problems for teachers ("Test + stress = problems for students," 2000). Therefore, students and teachers need a mechanism to deal with lessen these pressures. The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the effectiveness of a classroom based yoga intervention on student's test anxiety, academic performance, and attention level within a traditional mathematics class. Forty-four third grade students in two different classrooms participated in the study. The study had a pre- and post-test phase. A pre-Measurements of Academic Progress (MAP), Children Test Anxiety Scale (CTAS) and Children's Stroop test was given prior to the yoga intervention. The yoga intervention was given 4 days a week for 6 weeks to the intervention group only. The control group had no modifications added to their daily lessons. A post-intervention assessment was given using the same aforementioned instruments. The classroom iv teacher was asked to report any observations she made about her students during the intervention. The participants were also asked to write about their opinions and experiences they had during the intervention. The intervention group was compared to the control group to assess the level of anxiety, academic performance, and attention level. It was found that the intervention group improved more academically on a state math test than the control group. The academic performance was statically significant. Anxiety levels decreased in the intervention group, while the anxiety levels increased for the control group. Overall for anxiety, the girls revealed a larger benefit from the yoga intervention with the intervention group. The attention results showed no difference between the intervention and control, but the boys did see a greater ability to focus after the intervention. The intervention grouped lowered their time on the test. The findings indicated that a yoga intervention can increase academic performance and lower anxiety. Further research is need to investigate the gender differences and the effect of a yoga intervention on attention level.

Participants from a general education second grade classroom were provided with daily yoga activities from a modified Yoga Ed© program to supplement their regular spelling instruction from Spelling Connections. Another classroom was chosen as a control group and received the spelling instruction only. A spelling pretest and posttest were given to both classrooms before and after the 3-week intervention. Spelling test scores were analyzed using a 2 x 2 mixed factorial ANOVA. There was no significant difference calculated between the groups and test occasions (p = .625). This indicated that the yoga intervention did not significantly improve spelling test scores when compared to a control group. However, a significant difference between the groups tested (p = .047) was calculated, which could have negatively affected the results. Additional results supported the use of the current second grade curriculum, Spelling Connections, with significant improvement calculated in students when given the instruction alone (p = .021). Consideration for further studies are recommended using a longer intervention phase, random assignment, additional strategies from the program, and examination of improvements in areas such as attention, stress/anxiety, and academic performance.

This study investigates the effectiveness of a brief yoga intervention on perceived feelings of test anxiety in fifth grade students. This study involves three participants engaging in a brief yoga intervention. Three matched (by anxiety level) control students were compared to the intervention group in order to ensure that decreased anxiety was not due to a placebo effect. It was hypothesized that the intervention would lower test anxiety in participants after engagement in the yoga intervention. Effect size of the individual scores indicated the yoga intervention had a large effect of decreasing test anxiety. The control group also decreased test anxiety, but at an inconsistent rate. Group effect sizes indicated lowered levels of test anxiety in both intervention and control groups. The findings indicate the yoga intervention was associated with consistent decreased anxiety levels in all three yoga participants. Further research into the effects of yoga on test anxiety is needed to verify the results of this study.

In contrast, strong self-regulation skills are associated with better adaptive functioning outcomes including stronger academic performance, social competence, and stress management, which may act as a protective factor for adverse outcomes in adulthood. A promising intervention to address self-regulatory deficits is school-based mindfulness and yoga programs. Mindful yoga practice can promote the ability to focus better, avoid fights, and calm down. With use of archival data, the present study aimed to analyze changes in student's self-regulation and adaptive functioning outcomes post school-based yoga intervention. Adaptive functioning outcomes were measured by student reported benefits in the abilities to focus or pay attention better, avoid fights, and calm down when upset. The study explored whether student use of yoga at home influenced self-regulation changes. Results did not support positive changes overall in self-regulation after a school-based yoga program or the influence of self-regulation change scores on adaptive functioning outcomes. Our study did support the influence of yoga at home and higher changes in self-regulation and self-reported benefits to adaptive functioning outcomes. Younger children were more likely to report greater benefits in adaptive functioning outcomes. No gender differences were found in self-regulation or adaptive functioning outcomes.

Leaders in the Wilson County Schools school district implemented a literacy pull-out intervention program for third grade at-risk students as a strategy to improve reading proficiency for third grade at-risk students. This evaluation determined the impact of the literacy pull-out intervention program on academic performance of third grade at-risk students. Data results from both qualitative and quantitative sources were analyzed to determine the impact of the program. This study revealed that the literacy pull-out intervention program did not impact student proficiency on the North Carolina Third Grade Reading End-of-Grade test, but the program did impact student growth in reading for the at-risk students.

The significance of the study lies in its focus on the need for more outcome research linking school counselor-led interventions to student achievement. The importance of counselor-led research based interventions in positively affecting student achievement addresses a national mandate delineated by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, which calls for evidence-based interventions in education. The population for this study included male and female, third grade, general education students from diverse backgrounds, from one large school district located in south Florida, herein referred to as Pineapple State School District. A standardized objective statewide assessment instrument, the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) and the school district generated standardized test, Sunshine State Standards Diagnostics Test (SSSDT), were used to measure academic achievement. Analysis of the results in this study was done using an analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) with Pretest scores on the SSSDT 3rd grade reading (2010-2011) as covariates on the dependent variables to account for differences at pretest.

An estimated 10-17% of community samples and up to 45% of children in mental health clinics are affected. Due to legislation, such as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004, and increasing concerns for the mental health and well-being of school-age children, the development and expansion of school-based mental health services has grown. Educators, related service professionals, and communities realize that children are most accessible, and often most comfortable, in the school setting. As a result of a growing demand for school-based mental health services, there is a call for increasing the availability of evidence-based interventions. Yoga interventions are widely used with child and adolescent populations, and they are intuitively well-suited to address the psychosocial needs of children in a simple, fun, and cost-effective manner. Through increased body awareness and the provision of coping strategies, yoga interventions may address both the physiologic and psychological experiences of anxiety. However, there is a need for systematic examination and appraisal of current yoga research for children, additional well-controlled studies of yoga, and an increase in understanding the processes of change as a result of yoga.The objective of this dissertation is to 1) consolidate and systematically appraise the rigor of current yoga research for anxiety among youth, 2) determine the effectiveness of a school-based yoga program for anxious youth, and 3) elucidate important constructs, such as social validity and participant perspectives, through both quantitative and qualitative methods. Results from Chapter 2: A Systematic Review of Yoga Interventions for Anxiety Among Children and Youth, conclude that yoga interventions show positive effects in reducing anxiety across a variety of populations and meet criteria for a probably efficacious treatment. However, due to limitations (such as heterogeneity in populations, measures, and frequency/durations) there is a need for additional well-controlled, randomized trials, which include physiologic and psychological measures and long-term follow up. Results from Chapter 3: The Effectiveness of a School-Based Yoga Program for Anxious Youth, suggest improvements across measures of anxiety, self-regulation, and adaptive skills for the yoga group, as compared to the exercise group. However no statistically significant results were observed. Further study is needed to establish the effectiveness of the Move-Into-Learning for Anxiety program (MIL-A). Results from Chapter 4: Social Validity and Participant Perspectives of a School-Based Yoga Program for Anxious Youth, conclude that student and teacher perceptions of the MIL-A program are positive and support improved outcomes among anxious children. Social validity results show that teachers and students viewed MIL-A as valuable, feasible, and a moderately effective modality for improving anxiety related variables.

Book excerpt: The increased focus on standardized testing and assessment as a measure of performance and accountability has contributed to a significant increase in the presentation of anxiety in children and adolescents in the elementary school setting, impacting between 6% and 18% of our youngest school-aged children (Brown, 2013; Reinblatt & Riddle, 2007). Students are afraid of failure and the perceptions and consequences, perceived or realistic, that are experienced as a result of poor test performance. Grit and growth mindset are two related cognitive viewpoints that can teach students to look at failure and setbacks as learning opportunities, and that improvement towards long term goals can be achieved through hard work and perseverance. Grittiness and a shift to a growth mindset are examined in this proposed study as potential interventions to counteract the identified increase in anxiety related performance issues in the elementary school environment. Through an explanatory correlational approach, the researcher will utilize the Short Grit Scale (Grit-S), both self-report and informant versions, along with the Revised Children's Manifest Anxiety Scale, Second Edition (RCMAS-2) to compare student and parent responses and identify whether or not a relationship between the two traits is evident.
