The counseling group involves Mexican American adolescents and Mexican parents who have witnessed marginalization, acculturation, biculturalism, and lack of mental education; moreover, the proposed integrative approach combines cultural values of familismo, personalismo, and narrative and relational cultural therapy. A summary of the research documented the effectiveness of using these therapies with the Mexican population. The literature review suggested that group counseling helps Mexican parents and adolescents to feel connected and understood and features their collectivist views as strengths that can also support their community. The 13-week group employs a variety of approaches to give parents and adolescents tools they can use outside of group therapy such as the interventions of finding connections with others, mutual empathy, active listening, storytelling, and expressive narrative arts that can help alleviate symptoms of mental illness. Integrative theories have shown that Mexican families can become more resilient and improve symptoms of depression, anxiety, and increase feelings of togetherness, self-esteem, and joy. Although research is needed, the benefits of the proposed group can include improving family acceptance, support, and increase of mental support.

Book excerpt: This paper seeks to review the outcome data of the first 6 Hispanic families treated with the Teaching Responsible Behaviors to Adolescents (TRBA), a I 0-week comprehensive prevention program for adolescents at risk of developing depression. TRBA is based on Evidence Based Treatments for adolescents 12 to 18 years, aimed at preventing maladaptive behaviors, such as conflicts with teachers or peers in school, sudden drop in academic performance, withdrawal and isolation, poor self-image, difficulty handling peer pressure, problems of acculturation, experimentation with substances, frequent conflicts with parents, and unmanageability at home. The families were treated in a pre-, post-, and 3-month follow-up design. The program provided adolescents with individual psychotherapy based on Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) or Interpersonal Psychotherapy for Adolescents (IPT-A) elements, family therapy and psychoeducational groups targeting anger control, problem solving skills, communication skills, identification of risk, and promotion of healthy behaviors. Simultaneously, their parents or legal guardians received parenting skills training and family therapy. Results indicate that overall improvement was noted in 50% of the participants. Improvements in participants' adjustment and functioning level were noted 3 month after treatment in areas such as anxiety, self-esteem, sense of inadequacy, and interpersonal relations, as measured by the BASC. Among some participants whose functioning deteriorated after treatment, some gains were observed in externalizing symptoms such as school functioning 3 months after treatment, as measured by the Self-Efficacy Scales. Behavioral observations were gathered as qualitative information about the program's effectiveness. Participants that presented originally as shy and withdrawn displayed increased self-confidence and decreased anxiety toward the program's end. Some of the limitations of this study are considered to be the small sample size and lack of available post-assessment data for participant 5 across all measures and for participant 1 and 2 for the BASC.

Book excerpt: Since the 1960s, in comparison to other ethnic and gender groups, a higher rate of depression and suicide ideation has been documented for Latina girls. This Brief offers a concise summary of contemporary research on this critical topic. Among the considerations are the influence of bullying, families, immigration, and culture on Latina adolescent mental health. Presenting cutting-edge multiracial feminist frameworks for new and existing empirical findings, this book serves to guide the future research agenda on this topic. Clinical recommendations are also included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Directly applicable to practice, Group Activities for Latino/a Youth allows helping professionals such as human service workers, social workers, and school and community mental health counselors to select and apply a series of group sessions with topics relevant to today’s Latino/a youth. Each session contains detailed directions, suggested discussion questions, and additional readings on specific topics, with topic examples including grief, identity development, and conflict resolution. Sessions draw on Latino/a cultural norms and strengths to build culturally-informed communication and coping skills in an effort to improve educational, social, and career outcomes. A developmental perspective is used, and sessions are designed to be creative and interactive in order to appeal to the high energy and playfulness of youth at any age. Group Activities for Latino/a Youth helps professionals to better engage and retain Latino/a clients, a group that traditionally experiences one of the largest drop-out rates in therapy, often due to interventions largely informed by dominant Anglo norms and traditions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to identify the predictors within the family, school, and community environments of Hispanic and Asian adolescents' that may predict mental health (depression and self-esteem). Another aim was to compare the significant predictors of depression and self-esteem between Hispanic and Asian adolescents. This study used secondary data from Wave II of the Children of Immigrants Longitudinal Study (CILS). The target population was 2,114 students (1,008 Hispanics and 1,106 Asians) who were about to graduate from high school and 1,213 parents. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses were conducted to examine the associations between environmental variables and mental health (depression and self-esteem) in Latino and Asian adolescents, as well as the additional effects of predictors in a sequential way. In terms of predicting depression, gender and family cohesion were significant predictors for both Hispanic and Asian adolescents. Ethnic differences were observed in the effects on self-esteem. For the Hispanic sample, family cohesion, perceptions of school quality, perceptions of school safety, and perceptions of neighborhood safety were significant predictors. Along with the Hispanic group, family cohesion, perceptions of school quality, and perceptions of school safety were also significant predictors for the Asian sample. However, perception of neighborhood safety was not a significant predictor for Asian adolescents. Practice implications for effective interventions and recommendations for future study were suggested based on the findings of this study.
