Book excerpt: Abstract: Recent studies have suggested that Americans work more hours today than ever before. Some scholars argue that long work hours have negative impacts on families. The increase in married women's labor force participation has been associated with an increase in the likelihood of marital dissolution. Do wives' higher hours of employment destabilize marriages? I draw on attachment, role strain, and ideological consistency arguments to develop specific hypotheses regarding this association, the conditions under which it may vary, and the processes through which it operates. Using wave 1 (1987-1988) and wave 2 (1992-1994) of the National Survey of Families and Households (NSFH), I test whether there is a direct relationship between wives' hours of employment and the likelihood of marital dissolution, and whether the effect is moderated by the presence and age of children, husbands' hours of employment, and marital duration. I also test whether the relationship between wives' hours of employment and the likelihood of marital dissolution is contingent upon couples' gender ideology, and whether couples' marital happiness and marital conflict mediate this relationship. Limiting my sample to married primary respondents at wave 1 whose spouses were present and completed a questionnaire, and whose marital status at wave 2 could be ascertained, I construct couple-level measures of gender ideology, marital happiness, and marital conflict that capture consistency or conflict between spouses' views. I find a significant positive association between wives' hours of employment and the likelihood of marital dissolution. This effect does not significantly differ by the presence and age of children, husbands' hours of employment, or marital duration. Contrary to my expectations, this association is also not moderated by couples' gender ideology. However, this study strongly supports the hypothesis that wives' hours of employment leads to an increase in the likelihood of marital dissolution through a reduction in marital happiness and increase in marital conflict.

Book excerpt: Despite its important policy implications, little is known about the possible impact on marital dissolution of a workweek standard, which sets the maximum working hours for full-time salaried workers and, hence, tends to restrict their overtime work. Moreover, evidence on the effect of work on the risk of divorce has come predominantly from noncausal studies on the work status of women in the West. The Korean government reduced its workweek standard from 44 to 40 hours, and we assess how this four-hour reduction for male and female workers has affected their marital dissolution. Between 2004 and 2011, the 40-hour standard was initially applied to larger establishments and then later to smaller ones. We create two binary variables to indicate whether a husband's and wife's workweek standards were reduced to 40 hours in a given year, and discrete-time event history analysis examines the association of these variables with the risk of divorce. The annual longitudinal data come from the 2000 to 2015 waves of the Korea Labor and Income Panel Study. The results show that the legislative change for husbands lowered the risk of divorce, while that for wives had no significant impact. We speculate that the effect on men may be attributable to the reduction in their actual workweeks, which may have increased their interaction time with their spouses and children. By intervening in men's overtime work, workweek standards may serve as an effective policy tool to stabilize marriage in the work-oriented, gender-unequal Asian countries.

Book excerpt: Much of the previous research that has examined the effect of job loss on the probability of divorce rely on data from the 1970s-80s, a period of dramatic change in marital formation and dissolution. It is unclear how well this research pertains to more recent trends in marriage, divorce, and female labor force participation. This study uses data from the Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP) from 2000 to 2012 (thus including effects of the Great Recession) to examine how displacement (i.e., exogenous job loss) affects the probability of divorce. The author finds clear evidence that the effects of displacement appear to be asymmetric depending upon the gender of the job loser. Specifically, displacement significantly increases the probability of divorce but only if the husband is the spouse that is displaced and his earnings represented approximately half of the household's earnings prior to displacement. Similarly, results show that the probability of divorce increases if the wife is employed and as her earnings increase. While the mechanism behind these asymmetric results remains unclear, these results are consistent with recent research that finds a destabilizing effect on marriages when a wife earns more than her husband.

We examine the effects of possible sources of marital disruption, including poor labor market opportunities for young adults; the economic independence and improved labor market opportunities of women; and changes in the labor market roles and expectations of women within marriage. Using the National Longitudinal Surveys of Young Men, Young Women, and Youth, we estimate the effects on marital stability of husbands' and wives' levels, differences, and changes in educational attainment, income, and annual weeks worked. Our results suggest that average levels of couples' educational attainment and recent work experiences positively affect marital stability. The degree to which husbands and wives differ on educational attainment and income does not affect marital stability, but the more that wives work relative to their husbands, the greater the chances of disruption. Positive changes in wives' socioeconomic and labor force characteristics over the course of their marriages increase the odds of marital disruption.

This report adds to the literature by estimating of the effects of men's and women's employment and earnings on their likelihood of marriage in the United States. The estimates are based on an analysis of data from the evaluation of Job Corps, a labour market program aimed at disadvantaged young people aged between 16 and 24 years old. Participants were unmarried young people - 6,828 program group members and 4,485 control group members - surveyed at baseline in 1994-1996 and again 48Ưmonths after the program. The most prominent finding of this study is that an increase in employment and earnings via the Job Corps program increases the likelihood of marriage for young women with economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

Using the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979 Cohort, I use a semiparametric model to estimate both short-term and long-term effects of marital dissolution on women's school enrollment and educational attainment . The results indicate that women's school enrollment increases by 28% three years after marital dissolution and that the impact of marital dissolution persists 8 yea rs after marital disruption. The impact of marital dissolution is largest for women with an education of a high school diploma or less. Furthermore, the share of income generated by the husband during marriage is positively associated with the magnitude of the marital dissolution effect. I also show that divorced women begin to experience an increase in completed years of education 6 years after marital dissolution, primarily because many of these women are part -time students. Chapter 2 uses variation in the effectiveness of child support enforcement to identify the effect of child support income on paid employment of single mothers. Employing data from the Survey of Income and Program Participation, I find that child support income has a positive effect on the paid employment of previously married single mothers; each $1,000 increase in child support income increases the likelihood of paid employment by 6.7 percentage points. The effect is localized to lower-educated single mothers, for whom a $1,000 increase in child support income increases the likelihood of paid employment by 18.2 percentage points. Chapter 3 uses data drawn from two cohorts of youth from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979 and 1997 (NLSY79 and NLSY97), we examine the r elationship between teen parenthood and various socioeconomic indicators, with careful attention to the role of family- and individual-level unmeasured heterogeneity. We find that teen mothers in the NLSY79 had a larger employment penalty than teen mothers in the NLSY97, but teen mothers in the NLSY97 had a larger poverty penalty than teen mothers in the NLSY79. The results for men suggest that much of the observed correlation between teen fatherhood and the socioeconomic outcomes studied dissipate when co ntrolling for unobserved family-level characteristics.

Information collected in 1980 (Wave I) focused on the effects of wives' participation in the labor force on marriage and marital instability. Measures predicting marital instability and divorce and assessing marital quality were developed. Variables include information on earnings, commitment to work, hours worked, and occupational status. The focus of Wave II, conducted in 1983, was to link changes in factors such as economic resources, wife's employment, presence of children, marital satisfaction, life goals, and health to actions intended to dissolve a marriage, such as divorce and permanent separation. Information on adjustment to marital dissolution, relationship with in-laws, size of home, parents' employment, use of free time, club membership, child-care arrangements, and responsibility for chores was gathered. Wave III, collected in 1988, further examined the impact of changes in employment, economics, and health on marital relationships. Questions were asked about divorce and remarriage, investment of energy and resource use in the care of aging parents and dependent offspring, asset value, awareness of aging, mental health issues, and history of disease. In 1992, Wave IV data were collected to look at changes in employment, economics, and health. Questions were asked about retirement issues, family structure, and the impact of caring for aging parents while at the same time caring for dependent offspring.
