Book excerpt: The relation between tip clearance flow structure and axial compressor stall is interrogated via numerical simulations, to determine how casing treatment can result in improved flow range. Both geometry changes and flow field body forces are used as diagnostics to assess the hypothesis that the radial transport of momentum out of the tip region, and the consequent decrease in streamwise momentum in this region, is a key aspect of the flow. The radial velocity responsible for this transport is a result of the flow field set up by the tip clearance vortex. Altering the position of the tip clearance vortex can alter the amount of streamwise momentum lost due to radial transport and hence increase the compressor flow range. Circumferential grooves improve the flow range in the manner described above. In the presence of such a groove the radial velocity profile along the passage can be altered so that that the radial transport of streamwise momentum is decreased. The flow fields associated with grooves at different axial positions, and of different depths, are also examined, along with previous research on circumferential grooves, and it is shown that these are in accord with the hypothesis.

Flow field changes caused by increasing the tip seal clearance of a low speed, large scale axial compressor having a symmetric velocity diagram were examined experimentally. The measurements were made at several clearances for one rotational speed. Synchronized blade-to-blade measurements of case wall static pressure and skin friction under the rotor tip of the second stage were collected.

Book excerpt: The impact on compressor flow range of circumferential casing grooves of varying groove depth, groove axial location, and groove axial extent is assessed against that of a smooth casing wall using computational experiments. The computed results show that maximum range improvement is obtained for a groove depth of approximately a tip clearance and of an axial width of approximately 0.175 axial chord (approximately the near stall tip clearance vortex core size for the smoothwall compressor examined). It was found that for a groove of specified depth and axial width there are two axial locations, one at approximately 0.15 axial chord and one at approximately 0.6 axial chord from the rotor blade leading edge, to position the groove for maximum flow range improvement; this result is in accord with recent experimental observations. In addition, a method of extracting body forces is used to show that the force is finite at the blade tip and non-vanishing in the tip clearance.

Book excerpt: The flow through the tip clearance region of a transonic compressor rotor (NASA rotor 37) was computed and compared to aerodynamic probe and laser anemometer data. Tip clearance effects were modeled both by gridding the clearance gap and by using a simple periodicity model across the ungridded gap. The simple model was run with both the full gap height, and with half the gap height to simulate a vena-contracta effect. Comparisons between computed and measured performance maps and downstream profiles were used to validate the models and to assess the effects of gap height on the simple clearance model. Recommendations were made concerning the use of the simple clearance model. Detailed comparisons were made between the gridded clearance gap solution and the laser anemometer data near the tip at two operating points. The computer results agreed fairly well with the data but overpredicted the extent of the casing separation and underpredicted the wake decay rate. The computations were then used to describe the interaction of the tip vortex, the passage shock, and the casing boundary layer.
