Book excerpt: Alloy 690 in the thermally treated (TT) condition is an advanced steam generator tubing material. The effect of thermal ageing treatments on the intergranular corrosion (IGC) behavior of the alloy was probed. Isothermal ageing was carried out at 600, 700, and 800°C with varying ageing time. Morphology of the carbides was studied as a function of thermal treatment temperature and duration. The carbides morphology was observed to affect the IGC resistance. Grain boundaries devoid of carbides (solutionized condition) or with coarse carbide particles (formed at 800°C) enhanced IGC resistance, whereas dendritic fine carbides formed at lower ageing temperature yield inferior IGC resistance.

Book excerpt: The primary aim of this volume is to provide researchers and engineers from both academia and industry with up-to-date coverage of recent advances in the fields of robotic welding, intelligent systems and automation. It gathers selected papers from the 2017 International Workshop on Intelligentized Welding Manufacturing (IWIWM’2017), held June 23-26, 2017 in Shanghai, China. The contributions reveal how intelligentized welding manufacturing (IWM) is becoming an inescapable trend, just as intelligentized robotic welding is becoming a key technology. The volume is divided into four main parts: Intelligent Techniques for Robotic Welding, Sensing in Arc Welding Processing, Modeling and Intelligent Control of Welding Processing, and Intelligent Control and its Applications in Engineering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stress corrosion cracking behavior of several nickel-base alloys in high temperature caustic environments has been evaluated. The crack tip and fracture surfaces were examined using Auger/ESCA and Analytical Electron Microscopy (AEM) to determine the near crack tip microstructure and microchemistry. Results showed formation of chromium-rich oxides at or near the crack tip and nickel-rich de-alloying layers away from the crack tip. The stress corrosion resistance of different nickel-base alloys in caustic may be explained by the preferential oxidation and dissolution of different alloying elements at the crack tip. Alloy 600 (UNS N06600) shows good general corrosion and intergranular attack resistance in caustic because of its high nickel content. Thermally treated Alloy 690 (UNS N06690) and Alloy 600 provide good stress corrosion cracking resistance because of high chromium contents along grain boundaries. Alloy 625 (UNS N06625) does not show as good stress corrosion cracking resistance as Alloy 690 or Alloy 600 because of its high molybdenum content.

Book excerpt: "The Columbus Laboratories, Battelle Memorial Institute, originally prepared these reports in 1965 and later revised them, updating the information to include the latest technology through 1968. This report is one of a series pertaining to the fabricating of nickel, nickel-base, and cobalt-base alloys. This report deals with heat treating and working nickel and nickel-base alloys, and with the effects of these operations on the mechanical properties of the materials. The subjects covered are annealing, solution treating, stress relieving, stress equalizing, age hardening, hot working, cold working, combinations of working and heat treating (often referred to as thermomechanical treating), and properties of the materials at various temperatures. The equipment and procedures used in working the materials are discussed, along with the common problems that may be encountered and the precautions and corrective measures that are available."--Foreword.

This book was released on 1965 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an investigation of the effect of heat treatment on microstructure and corrosion resistance, seven heats of wrought Ni-Cr-Mo alloy were heated in the range of 800 F to 2375 F. Corrosion was studied in reducing and in oxidizing acids. Oxalic acid etch structures produced by various precipitates were classified and correlated with corrosion rates. Two maxima in corrosion rates were found: one on specimens heated near 1400 F and the other on specimens heated near 1900 F. In hydrochloric acid, only the maximum at 1400 F is revealed, while in chromic acid, only the maximum at 1900 F is detected. Both maxima are revealed by exposure to nitric acid, pure sulfuric acid and ferric sulfate-sulfuric acid solution.

Book excerpt: Studies have been made of the influence of various heat treatments on the rupture properties and microstructure of a 55Ni-20Cr-15Co-4Mo-3Ti-3Al alloy to provide more fundamental information on the relationships between structure and high-temperature properties in alloys of this type. The effects of variations in solution treatment, cooling rate after solution treatment, and aging treatment on the stress-rupture properties of the alloy at 1,600 degrees F and 25,000 psi have been measured and related to variations in the size and distribution of precipitates within the alloy and to residual rolling effects.

Book excerpt: This is thought to be due to the larger amounts of tertiary [gamma]ʹ present in the microstructure produced by the standard heat treatment. Finally, the standard heat treatment had longer creep lifetimes at the lowest test temperature. The alternate heat treatment performed better at the higher test temperatures. While the microstructure did not improve the fatigue properties across the board, the improved understanding of the microstructural evolution during heat treatment will help in developing new heat treatments that may provide the defect-tolerance that is necessary.
