Book excerpt: "Contained in this paper are the results of research which was performed to investigate the relation between the volume-change mechanisms of shrinkage and one-dimensional compression for two clay soils, including some samples whose structures had been altered by the addition of flocculating and dispersing agents. Shrinkage tests were conducted with a special mold designed to facilitate the study of a soil's shrinkage path. consolidation tests on undisturbed samples and one-dimensional compression tests on unsaturated samples compacted in the vicinity of optimum moisture content were performed. A detailed study was made of a highly plastic red Missouri clay. Complications arose in the shrinkage tests which prevented a general comparison of the two means of volume reduction. Specific conclusions are drawn as to the mechanism of unsaturated compression of clays and the related effects of structure, and suggestions are made for further study"--Abstract, leaf ii.

Book excerpt: "This paper reports the results of an investigation conducted to establish the effect of structure on the consolidation characteristics of a clay soil. Soil structure was caused to form in the soil by the addition of electrolytes to flocculate and disperse the clay fraction of the soil. Consolidation tests were performed on specimens of the treated soil prepared at moisture contents well above the liquid limit of the soil. The consolidation data from these tests are evaluated and comparisons are made to relate the influence of structure to the consolidation characteristics of the treated soil. The influence of structure on the consolidation characteristics of cohesive soil is found to be significant and suggestions for further research are made"--Abstract, leaf ii.

Book excerpt: Consolidation of clay soils is one of the main challenges in engineering design and construction. Clayey soils could be exposed to thermal cycles in some engineering applications such as geothermal piles, nuclear waste storages, heat storage in embankments, etc. These temperature changes could affect the primary consolidation as well as the creep behaviour of the soils. In this context, this study investigated the impact of temperature on consolidation behaviour and creep behaviour of saturated compacted clays. In addition, the impact of stress history and clay nature on the temperature dependent mechanical and hydraulic behaviours was also considered. Temperature controlled oedometric cells were employed to perform constant rate of strain (CRS) consolidation tests for different strain rates (0.002%/min to 0.02%/min) within a temperature range of 5° C to 70o C. Two different compacted saturated clays with different stress histories were used in these CRS tests (clay A: PI=31%, clay B: PI=23.8%). The results showed that the compression and swelling indices for both materials changed slightly with temperature and strain rate alteration. The preconsolidation pressure of both clays decreased as the temperature increased, but less in the case of clay B, while it decreased as the strain rate decreased for both materials. The hydraulic conductivity increased with temperature while the intrinsic permeability remained unchanged in the investigated range of temperature. The creep index increased as the temperature increased for both clays. In addition, the stress history has an impact on the temperature dependent mechanical and hydraulic behaviour of clay soils. Results showed a thermal dilation for highly overconsolidated soils and a thermal contraction for low and normally consolidated samples. The relative impact of several parameters on the modification of the behaviour of compacted clays with temperature was also assessed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When stresses are applied to saturated soil, deformation will occur as water in voids is squeezed out. Consolidation Analyses of Soils focuses on the consolidation of fully saturated soils. The book follows a classic approach by beginning with one-dimensional constitutive relations of soils and one-dimensional consolidation. It then moves on to analytical solutions to several one-dimensional consolidation problems and one-dimensional finite strain consolidation. The authors also present a finite element method for consolidation analysis of one-dimensional problems, analytical solutions to consolidation of soil with vertical drains, and a finite difference method for consolidation analysis of one-dimensional problems. Simplified methods for consolidation analysis of soils exhibiting creep are introduced and applied to different cases. Three-dimensional consolidation equations and solutions of typical three-dimensional consolidation problems are covered, as well as simplified finite element consolidation analysis of soils with vertical drain and finite element method for three-dimensional consolidation problems. The book is unique in that it covers both classic solutions and state-of-the-art work in consolidation analyses of soils. Authors Jian-Hua Yin is Chair Professor of Soil Mechanics in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Guofu Zhu is a Professor in the Department of Engineering Structures and Mechanics at Wuhan University of Technology, China.

Book excerpt: The total amount of settlement that a structure founded on a clay soil undergoes comprises of immediate (or elastic) and consolidation settlements. In the case of clay soils, amount of consolidation settlement (Sc) is more than that of immediate or elastic settlement (Se). Hence, it is important to correctly estimate the amount of consolidation settlement (Sc). The parameters that influence consolidation settlement of a field soil are initial degree of saturation (S%), void ratio (e) of soil prior to excavation, the amount of overburden pressure removed during trench making ( o), or in other words, the amount of rebound caused in the soil giving rise to final void ratio just before construction and the intensity of loading or the applied pressure ( ). This book presents an experimental study on the effect of above parameters on compressibility characteristics of a clay soil. The different steps undertaken in the field for footing construction are simulated in the laboratory and compressibility studied.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades the development of unsaturated soil mechanics has been remarkable, resulting in momentous advances in fundamental knowledge, testing techniques, computational procedures, prediction methodologies and geotechnical practice. The advances have spanned the full spectrum of theory and practice. In addition, unsaturated materials exhibiting complex behaviour such as residual soils, swelling soils, compacted soils, collapsing soils, tropical soils and solid wastes have been integrated in a common understanding of shared behaviour features. It is also noteworthy that unsaturated soil mechanics has proved surprisingly fruitful in expanding to other neighbouring areas such as swelling rocks, rockfill mechanics, and freezing soils. As a consequence, geotechnical engineering involving unsaturated soils can be now approached from a more rational and systematic perspective leading towards an improved and more effective practice. Unsaturated Soils contains the papers presented at the 5th International Conference on Unsaturated Soil (Barcelona, Spain, 6-8 September 2010). They report significant advances in the areas of unsaturated soil behaviour, testing techniques, constitutive and numerical modelling and applications. The areas of application include soil-atmosphere interaction, foundations, slopes, embankments, pavements, geoenviromental problems and emerging topics. They are complemented by three keynote lectures and three general reports covering general issues of modelling, testing and applications. Unsaturated Soils is a comprehensive record of the state-of-the art in unsaturated soil mechanics and a sound basis for further progress in the future. The two volumes will serve as an essential reference for academics, researchers and practitioners interested in unsaturated soils.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this research, soil consolidation is explored in a comprehensive analytical and experimental study. The pore pressure development and dissipation for clay at its liquid limit under one-dimensional compression was investigated using the mid-plane pore pressure measurements. In general, the Terzaghi's theory of consolidation predicted the pore pressure dissipation and the percent consolidation accurately as long as the sample was in a normally loaded state. For a preconsolidated state however, the results obtained by Terzaghi theory are doubtful. Coefficient of consolidation for smaller pressures varied during consolidation, and although the soil was in a fully saturated state for relatively high pressure increments, the pore pressure developed was less than the applied pressure. Then, the effect of different pressure increment ratios on one dimensional consolidation tests has been studied. The secondary compression effects have been founded to increase as the pressure increment ratio is reduced. Consolidation of a clay layer delimited between sheets with small permeability was also investigated in this study. The consolidation theory of compressible soils usually assumes drainage-free boundaries. This change in boundary conditions at the drainage surface necessitates the use of an approximate technique for solution of the governing partial differential equation. In this study, the solution was obtained by using the Galerkin Method and compared with the "free drainage" case. As expected, the consolidation in the case of restricted drainage proceeds at a much lower rate. The compression consolidation behavior of trampled clays in a semi- saturated state was also analyzed in this research program. It is generally known that the type and energy of compaction bring about deviations in the soil structure and hence, in its engineering properties. Therefore, in the experimental phase of this study, soils were prepared by different trampling efforts and also by different compaction methods. Finally, a reasonably realistic theory of soil consolidation has been proposed and the effect of variable permeability and compressibility on the consolidation behavior was investigated followed by a mathematical treatment of the behavior. Subsequently, laboratory consolidation tests with mid-plane pore pressure measurements were conducted on different kinds of clay.

Book excerpt: The coupled and uncoupled consolidation theories for saturated-unsaturated soils have been discussed. A new method for constructing the constitutive surfaces for saturated-unsaturated soils has been proposed. The consolidation processes for saturated-unsaturated soils have been explained by thermodynamic analogue. One dimensional consolidation theory for saturated-unsaturated soils is presented and a new method is proposed to calculate the immediate settlement, total settlement and the time history of the consolidation settlement manually in the same way as what we have done for saturated soils with a higher accuracy. It makes the consolidation theory of unsaturated soils as applicable as that of saturated soils. This method can also be used to perform uncoupled two or three dimensional consolidation calculation for both expansive soils and collapsible soils. From the analysis, the equivalent effective stress and excessive pore water pressure can be easily calculated. At the same time, the physical meanings for the parameters in the constitutive laws for saturated-unsaturated are illustrated. A new set of the differential equations for the coupled two or three dimensional consolidation of saturated-unsaturated soils are proposed, together with the corresponding method to solve the differential equations. It is also proved numerically and analytically that during the consolidation process the Mandel-Cryer effect exists for unsaturated expansive soils and there is a "reverse" Mandel-Cryer effect for unsaturated collapsible soils. A new method is proposed to estimate the volume change of expansive soils. A complete system is proposed for the numerical simulation of residential buildings on expansive soils. The strength of this method lies in its use of simple and readily available historic weather data such as daily temperature, solar radiation, relative humidity, wind speed and rainfall as input. Accurate three dimensional predictions are obtained by integrating a number of different analytical and numerical techniques: different simulation methods for different boundary conditions such as tree, grass, and bare soils, coupled hydro-mechanical stress analysis to describe deformation of saturated-unsaturated soils, jointed elements simulation of soil-structure interaction, analysis of structure stress moment by general shell elements, and to assess structural damage by the smeared cracking model. The real-time and dynamic simulation results are consistent with filed measurements.

Book excerpt: The definitive guide to unsaturated soil— from the world's experts on the subject This book builds upon and substantially updates Fredlund and Rahardjo's publication, Soil Mechanics for Unsaturated Soils, the current standard in the field of unsaturated soils. It provides readers with more thorough coverage of the state of the art of unsaturated soil behavior and better reflects the manner in which practical unsaturated soil engineering problems are solved. Retaining the fundamental physics of unsaturated soil behavior presented in the earlier book, this new publication places greater emphasis on the importance of the "soil-water characteristic curve" in solving practical engineering problems, as well as the quantification of thermal and moisture boundary conditions based on the use of weather data. Topics covered include: Theory to Practice of Unsaturated Soil Mechanics Nature and Phase Properties of Unsaturated Soil State Variables for Unsaturated Soils Measurement and Estimation of State Variables Soil-Water Characteristic Curves for Unsaturated Soils Ground Surface Moisture Flux Boundary Conditions Theory of Water Flow through Unsaturated Soils Solving Saturated/Unsaturated Water Flow Problems Air Flow through Unsaturated Soils Heat Flow Analysis for Unsaturated Soils Shear Strength of Unsaturated Soils Shear Strength Applications in Plastic and Limit Equilibrium Stress-Deformation Analysis for Unsaturated Soils Solving Stress-Deformation Problems with Unsaturated Soils Compressibility and Pore Pressure Parameters Consolidation and Swelling Processes in Unsaturated Soils Unsaturated Soil Mechanics in Engineering Practice is essential reading for geotechnical engineers, civil engineers, and undergraduate- and graduate-level civil engineering students with a focus on soil mechanics.
