Some cutting-edge studies have gone a step further and used biomechanical performance to develop physical medicine and rehabilitation approaches and explore the mechanisms behind their effectiveness. However, such studies are still relatively rare. This research topic is intended to encourage more relevant projects to be published. This research topic aims to encourage researchers to use biomechanical performance to design advanced physical medicine and rehabilitation approaches, evaluate the effectiveness of the rehabilitation approaches, and explore the mechanisms by which rehabilitation approaches work for neuromusculoskeletal disorders. Some studies have developed stretching approaches for the rehabilitation of knee osteoarthritis in older adults by measuring biomechanical performance during functional activities. Some studies indicated that the mechanism of physical activity to reduce falls in older adults lies in its effectiveness in increasing proprioceptive sensitivity, and further indicated that rehabilitation of proprioception may be a key to reducing falls in the fall-prone older adult population. Some other studies analyzed biomechanical performance in ankle ligament injuries to understand when, how, and why ligaments fail. As a result, this research topic will expand the application of biomechanical performance to better understand and treat neuromusculoskeletal disorders.

Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. These included: recognizing the benefits of instilling life-long physical activity habits in children; the value of using systems thinking in improving physical activity and physical education in the school environment; the recognition of current disparities in opportunities and the need to achieve equity in physical activity and physical education; the importance of considering all types of school environments; the need to take into consideration the diversity of students as recommendations are developed. Book excerpt: Adults with Down syndrome are an underserved population at high risk for a host of different pathologies from aging and lack of activity. Resistance training could be one modality that can significantly influence motor skill and cognitive performance based on the evidence that there is a positive association between intellectually stimulating activities (ex. resistance training) and an increase in cognitive performance. Resistance training may also significantly influence a host of different mood and physiological/performance variables in adults with Down syndrome to improve health and day-to-day functionality. Cognition (i.e., the mental process of acquiring knowledge and understanding through thought, experience, and senses), is vital for everyday understanding of tasks and interfaces with the environment. Feelings and mood states are also vital for a positive outlook and interactions with other people. This study was designed to address a global question of how resistance training would influence changes in cognition, health metrics, and physical performance capabilities of individuals with Down syndrome. We hypothesized that resistance training would improve cognition, motor function, and mood in adults with Down syndrome. Our secondary hypothesis was that resistance training would improve physical strength in adults with Down syndrome. Understanding the true adaptive effects of resistance training would provide novel findings. In turn, this would help promote a major move forward in the use of this mode of exercise as a therapeutic, health, and fitness iii modality in this underserved population of people. The participants (n = 11) were men and women clinically diagnosed with Down syndrome (age: 25.8 ± 6.4 years; height: 151.5 ± 8.3 cm; weight: 67.5 ± 13.0 kg). Paired samples t-tests were used to assess differences between BL1a and BL1b to confirm the reliability and validity of the cognitive testing, along with PRE/POST differences between resistance training intervention to determine the effectiveness of the intervention (BL2 to PT). Pearson correlational analysis were used to assess the relationship between the percentage change in post testing variables. The significance in this study was set at p ≤ 0.05. Cognitive performance, motor function, mood, physical strength, body composition, and bone density were measured before and after a 10-week non-linear periodized resistance exercise training intervention using cutting edge cognitive batteries specifically tailored for a wide range of severities of Down syndrome. Findings of this investigation revealed the positive benefits from resistance training for adults with Down syndrome. Book excerpt: Background: Childhood obesity accompanied by low health-related physical fitness (HRPF) is a major threat to public health, both internationally and locally. Children with intellectual disability (ID), especially adolescents, have a high risk of being overweight or obese and of having poor HRPF. More interventions, therefore, are needed to help this population attain their optimal health levels. However, few studies have examined this population, in contrast to the numerous studies designed for their typically developing (TD) peers. The purpose of this study was to design a physical activity (PA) intervention for this under-researched population and to evaluate its effectiveness on obesity-related outcomes (primary), HRPF outcomes (primary), and blood pressure (secondary) as well as its sustained effects. Methods: First, a systematic review and a meta-analysis of lifestyle intervention studies on obesity and HRPF were conducted to identify effective intervention strategies for the target population and to provide evidence for designing the PA programme. Three databases were systematically searched for studies published until May 2020. The random effects model was used to pool the weighted results with inverse variance methods, and the I2 statistic was applied to assess heterogeneity among the included studies. Second, a school-based randomised controlled trial (RCT) was implemented for 12 weeks. Participants (N = 30) aged 12–18 years were recruited and randomly allocated to either the intervention group (IG) or the waitlist control group (CG). The participants in the IG received a fun game–based moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) training program (2 sessions/week, 60 minutes/session, for a total of 24 sessions). The intensity of the activities increased in a progressive manner. Participants in the CG received no treatment during the 12-week intervention period. All participants were followed up for 12 weeks afterwards to evaluate the sustaining effects of the intervention. Study outcomes included primary outcomes (obesity- and fitness-related outcomes) and a secondary outcome (blood pressure). All measurements were repeatedly taken at baseline, after intervention, and after follow-up. Analysis of variance for repeated measures was applied to detect within-group differences in the measured outcomes across three time points, whereas analysis of covariance was performed to evaluate the between-group differences. Results: The systematic review and meta-analysis revealed that PA was the predominant intervention component, as it was adopted in 27 of the 29 examined studies. Book excerpt: Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine whether a home or community-based exercise program was more effective for improving physical fitness for adolescents and young adults with Intellectual Disabilities (ID) and Autism. Methods: Fourteen adolescents and young adults with ID and/ or Autism, 10 males and 4 females, ages 14-27 years, were randomized to a home or community-based exercise program for 8 weeks. Both groups exercised three days a week for 30 minutes. The home group exercised alone with parental supervision and watched an online video; the community-based group exercised with a coach and peers. The participants were assessed pre and post intervention using the Brockport Physical Fitness Test (BPFT) to measure aerobic function, body composition, musculoskeletal function, and flexibility. Repeated measures ANOVA was used to assess improvements between groups, and paired sample t-tests were used to assess improvements for the entire sample. Results: The results indicated no significant differences (p > .05) in improvement between the home and community-based groups for any fitness variable. There was also no significant change for most fitness variables for the entire sample. However, there was a significant (p=.026) improvement in the trunk lift fitness measure (pre-test = 8.4 inches, post-test = 9.6 inches) for the entire sample.Conclusion: Although both groups showed improvements for the fitness variables tested, the difference between groups was not significant. The improvements that were made indicate that the home or community-based exercise program can be beneficial in helping this population improve their physical fitness.
