Book excerpt: A PLASMA CONTAINMENT DEVICE ENTITLED ROMAC (ROTATED MAGNETIC CUSP) WASCONSTRUCTED. AN ATTEMPT WAS MADE TO COMBINE THE BASIC STABILITY ADVANTAGES OF FOUR-POLE LINE CUSP WITH THE LOW LOSS RATE OF A MORROR FIELD. THE MAGNETIC FIELD FOR ROMAC WAS PRODUCED BY ADDING A MIRROR FIELD ORTHONGONALLY TO THE CUSP FIELD. USING PULSE TECHNIQUES AN IONIZED GAS WAS CREATED WITHIN A BICONICAL CHAMBER AND THE ROMAC MAGNETIC FIELD PRODUCED TRANSIENTLY WITH THE MIRROR FIELD ALONG THE AXIS OF THE CHAMBER(Z AXIS) AND THE CUSP FIELD IN THE X-Y PLANE. MEASUREMENTS WITH MAGNETIC PROBES AND LIGHT PIPES SHOW THAT A DISTURBANCE IN THE MAGNETIC FIELD, ACCOMPANIED BY AN INCREASE IN LIGHT INTENSITY, STARTED AT THE PERIPHERY OF THE PLASMA CHAMBER AND WAS PROPAGATED INWARD AT TWO VELOCITIES TO THE CENTRAL AXIS. DETAILED MEASUREMENTS WERE MADE ON THE MAGNETIC FIELD CONFIGURATION. THESE INDICATE THAT, AT THE TIME THE SECOND WAVE ARRIVED AT THE AXIS, THE MIRROR HIELD HAD BEEN TO A LARGE EXTENT SEPARATED FROM THE CUSP FIELD SO THAT MOSTLY MIRROR FIELD EXISTED THROUGHOUT THE CENTRAL REGION, WHILE MOSTLY CUSP FIELD EXISTED IN THE OUTER REGION. THE INTENSITY OF THE FIELD AT THIS TIME IN THE CENTRAL REGION INDICATES THAT THE CUSP FIELD WAS COMPRESSING THE PLASMA AND MIRRORFIELD IN THIS REGION WERE EVEN LARGER THAN THE MAXIMUM INTENSITY OF THE APPLIED MIRROR FIELD.

Book excerpt: The present research studies the fundamental physics occurring during the magnetic flux and magnetized plasma compression by plasma implosion. This subject is relevant to numerous studies in laboratory and space plasmas. Recently, it has attracted particular interest due to the advances in producing high-energy-density plasmas in fusion-oriented experiments, based on the approach of magnetized plasma compression. The studied configuration consists of a cylindrical gas-puff shell with pre-embedded axial magnetic field that pre-fills the anode-cathode gap. Subsequently, axial pulsed current is driven through the plasma generating an azimuthal magnetic field that compresses the plasma and the axial magnetic field embedded in it. A key parameter for the understanding of the physics occurring during the magnetized plasma compression is the evolution and distribution of the axial and azimuthal magnetic fields. Here, for the first time ever, both fields are measured simultaneously employing non-invasive spectroscopic methods that are based on the polarization properties of the Zeeman effect. These measurements reveal unexpected results of the current distribution and the nature of the equilibrium between the axial and azimuthal fields. These observations show that a large part of the current does not flow in the imploding plasma, rather it flows through a low-density plasma residing at large radii. The development of a force-free current configuration is suggested to explain this phenomenon. Previously unpredicted observations in higher-power imploding-magnetized-plasma experiments, including recent unexplained structures observed in the Magnetized Liner Inertial Fusion experiment, may be connected to the present discovery.

The high beta plasmas are shown to have supercritical pressure profiles that exceed the MHD limit. The finding confirms that the ECRH produced hot electrons that carry most of the pressure are minimally sensitive to the limit. The MHD gradient limit is slightly increased by incorporating pressure anisotropy, but magnetic data routinely gives a best fit profile that substantially exceeds even the anisotropic limit. It has yet to be seen whether the kinetic analog of the MHD interchange mode, or the hot electron interchange mode (HEI), plays a significant role in limiting the hot electron density gradient. The HEI's have been magnetically measured and shown to correlate with drops in flux measurements. Lastly, it is revealed that LDX plasmas display a linear scaling of stored energy with plasma current (known as the D-P-S relation), much like magnetospheric plasmas. This scaling is used to estimate the energy confinement time of LDX plasmas with different heating frequency compositions.

Book excerpt: A plasma has been produced by irradiation of an aluminum slab with a 6.6 joule, 22 nanosecond (10 to the 10th power watt/sq cm) pulse of 1.06 micrometer radiation. Magnetic fields were observed to arise spontaneously when the laser-produced plasma was formed. The space and time behavior of the spontaneous magnetic fields and their relationship to the plasma density profile for expansion into various background pressures of H2, He, N2 and Ar was investigated using magnetic and electrostatic (double) probes. The magnitude and direction of the magnetic fields was found to depend on the background gas pressure. The generation of spontaneous magnetic fields at the front of the expanding laser plasma was observed long after laser irradiation ceased. These fields were axially symmetric and in a direction opposite to the initial field direction. Reverse fields were observed only above a critical background gas pressure. Magnetic fields were also observed to arise when a laser plasma impinged on a glass plate. The observed increase of the magnitude of the initial spontaneous magnetic fields is interpreted as arising from the momentum interaction between the expanding laser plasma and the pre-ionized ambient background plasma. The reverse field is attributed to the development of an axial electron temperature gradient at the plasma front due to snowplowing of the ambient plasma. (Author).

Solenoidal electric fields associated with the large pressure and temperature gradients existing in laser-produced plasmas have previously accounted for the conversion of plasma thermal energy into magnetic field energy. It is shown that, in addition to these thermal sources, radiation pressure gradients produce a solenoidal electric field and thus provide a non-thermal (not dependent on plasma heating) source so that there is a direct conversion of laser radiation energy to magnetic field energy. This also implies a non-thermal (no plasma heating) absorption of laser radiation. (Author).

Book excerpt: Theoretical and experimental studies of a gas laser amplifier are presented, assuming the amplifier is operating with a saturating optical frequency signal. The analysis is primarily concerned with the effects of the gas pressure and the presence of an axial magnetic field on the characteristics of the amplifying medium. Semi-classical radiation theory is used, along with a density matrix description of the atomic medium which relates the motion of single atoms to the macroscopic observables. A two-level description of the atom, using phenomenological source rates and decay rates, forms the basis of our analysis of the gas laser medium. Pressure effects are taken into account to a large extent through suitable choices of decay rate parameters. The behavior of a He-Ne gas laser amplifier in the presence of an axial magnetic field has been studied experimentally by measuring gain and Faraday rotation of linearly polarized resonant laser signals for various values of input signal intensity, and by measuring nonlinearity - induced anisotropy for elliptically polarized resonant laser signals of various input intensities. The experimental results agree quite well with corresponding theoretical expressions which have been developed to include the nonlinear effects of saturation strength signals. (Author).
